PIA Quitting Amsterdam & Frankfurt

Fri Jul 19, 2013 7:29 pm

PK will stop flying to AMS from 3 September, currently operate twice weekly A310 linking with Islamabad, Lahore and Frankfurt [no traffic], 777s are sometimes on the route too.

They are also planning to close other stations not mentioned, and shut down offline ones as well, so far those in Sydney, Glasgow, Chicago and Saudi city of Yanbu have gone, as well as one of two offices in London.

The 737-900 is also being looked at, with 10 to be leased, but with PIA one never knows.

A local business group might take 35% stake in the airline.

Lots of changes happening with PK. Any updates on SNN replacing the MAN transit stop for LHE-JFK flights?

I think that's off but you never know as it was introduced during this PM's govt.. starting in early 1990s, I like the way this guy is dissing the 743 purchase in 1999 which also came with this PM's approval and PM buddy who was chairman PIA and now runs Airblue.

I suppose that automatically means the closing of their office in the Leidsestraat of Amsterdam; one of the busiest (shopping) streets in Amsterdam. The funny thing is that for years I've never seen that office being open or even someone inside. I always wondered how they could sustain their office on such a high profile location.

No GLA is not resuming, some group had tried to convince last govt. to reintroduce it, but that's history now.

The non high-summer-season loads from AMS are always highly embarrasing and I'm not surprised that they will quit. I will miss their gorgeous 313's at AMS though!

They should dust off the plan to create a JV with Turkish Airlines.

PIA can easily feed 150 odd cities in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas on 1-stop basis via Istanbul.

PK can run a few daily flights to IST.

Good for the general public connecting to Europe. Good for PIA to open up new markets never served before. But the pride of the employees will prevent such a venture from ever happening. They'd rather see their employer run at a loss than give up Europe and hub through IST.

^ They already are planning a strike over privatization plan.

In other news PIA have just one 737 flying now, with this they have ended jet ops to two domestic stations one of which is the scenic northern city of Skardu, the only destination in Pakistan with alll jet service both now with ATR, the aircraft however continues to serve ten other domestic stations.

Regionally Kabul gone ATR, other places that were served with the type Bahrain, Doha and Delhi-Lahore route have been upgraded to A310. Only remaining international service with 737 at present is to Abu Dhabi from Peshawar.

Sialkot which got its own privately funded airport few years back has become sole destination in the country to get PK wide bodies exclusively, as ATR and 737 have stopped flying there.
