Bosses are on a flight next to it, they are saying the plane broke apart. Don't know how credible they are but that's all I've heard... Media isn't reporting anything.

Landed with a known malfunction before landing, botched landing or failure on roll out?
Anyone know

CNN confirming the flight was BNA-LGA, and are saying that LGA is closed to landings at the moment.

Seeing that it didn't circle at all, I am guessing this was not an anticipated event (I.e all 3 were in the green)...

The image with reply 2 seems to indicate limited damage.

IMO, this did not happen at high speed.

this might work

Hard to tell but based on the signage it looks to be near the runway/runway intersection, which will effectively keep LGA closed until they remove it...

Take that back, upon review of the airport diagram, it was an angled exit showing the signage, and is south enough that 13-31 should be unaffected

Does anyone know if the nose gear collapsed on the runway and the plane skidded off, or if the plane departed the runway/taxiway and the nose gear collapsed in the grass/mud?

It does not look like the front gear collapsed. The bay door looks like it is still closed.

Might be hard to tell from the soft/wet ground. Looking at flight aware there was no fly by or circling, you would expect with a known problem they would have attempted to rectify it.

It was 8 minutes into the ABC National News before it was mentioned.

I doubt that anything short of an Air Force 1 crash could have bumped the new royal baby off the top of the news, at least in the US.

-------------------------

WFAA TV channel 8 in Dallas is reporting that the FAA is keeping the passengers on the plane until the situation is evaluated.

I find that hard to believe.

EDIT - a twitter photo link above shows there WAS an evacuation.

I find that hard to believe, though the slide deployment might not have been an evacuation.

Check out this photo link that was posted earlier. Sure looks like passengers leaving the aircraft through 2R.

Why the shutes....?

Aircraft looks in good shape...(ie no fire etc)

Usually more injury's occur using them , than not...

Would have thought the Capt. would have had a constant update from the tower with regard his situation,,?

I am with you, I suspect that would be the captains decision.

Pavement looks dry in the video.

If the gear was down and the doors open I would suspect they would have been removed by pavement rash well up the runway. Hard to tell.

Wouldn't the doors get jammed up into the gear bay when the nose gear collapsed? that was my first thought when the subject was suggested. Or am I wrong?

It does not look like it was an immeidate emergency evac.

The fact that a uniformed police officer, not a fireman, is near the bottom of the slide and wing tip directing the passengers coming down the chute to another location - indicates it is a decision to use the chute(s) to clear the aircraft.

Quoting tugger (Reply 35):
It's the safest way to quickly exit the aircraft.

In that nose down position, and slow, carefully controlled use of chutes is a very safe exit method.

Depends upon the exact application of the force when the gear collapsed. Was there any sideways force? A hard letdown, a soft letdown, etc. Too many possibilities to answer the question without pictures.

Anything from shoving them up, to breaking them off, to bending them outward could happen.

I am also surprised they evacuated using the shutes but its the captains call and it is not easy to tell the passengers to wait. Also with the recent OZ 214 crash I don't blame them for ordering the evacuation.

Also I'm fairly confident there was no prior warning and it was just a classic nose gear collapse. Makes no sense to go to LGA. Also the spoilers deployed. If they had nose gear issues why arm the spoilers? Right?

Actually judging by the pic, it would seem 1R would have been a better choice to use as it is much lower to the ground.

Supports the things happen in 3 theory. Asiana SFO. KEF. Now WN. Glad everyone is ok especially if it is was a nose gear collapse. That's got to be surprising to the pilots.

I heard they knew before they landed that they were having problems with the gear. But if that was thecass I would've thought they would divert to JFK, with ts MUCH longer runways.

"The Boeing 737 reported potential landing gear problems before touching down on Runway 4 and coming safely to a stop at about 5:45 p.m. ET, the FAA said in a statement."

The WN accident is about the x teenth after the Asiana crash.
