Stomach Bug Triggers Mass Vomiting On Qantas Fli

Thu Aug 01, 2013 12:17 pm

Dozens of people were rushed off a Qantas moody for medical diagnosis in Sydney on Thursday after a stomach bug struck mid-journey, triggering a mass queasiness episode.

Qantas pronounced a “number of passengers travelling in a same organization on QF28 (between) Santiago and Sydney became indisposed with a gastro abdominal illness” on a 14-hour tour to Australia.

I'm sorry to laugh, but "mass vomiting on Qantas" did. I'm sure it was awful and not funny for anyone.

Has this happened before?

I was tempted to ask "was the IFE that bad?"

Hope they had enough barf bags. Now why do I have to laugh again?

OK, it's not funny but it could have been worse, then other end opening as well......

The last place you want to be when you're vomiting is on a full flight that's 14 hours long.

Incidently, the extremely poor grammar in that article nearly made me vomit.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I had that happen to a group of high school students returning from a senior trip to DC. All 30 of them had a group lunch before boarding and it hit about 45 min into the light. To make matters worse, the enroute t-storms were pretty bad. No bueno. I feel for those poor pax....and for the cabin crew.

Not a pleasant experience, having been through this on a cruise, hope the crew did not put the toilets out of bounds when landing, every little bit helps.

Wondering if Qantas set this plane aside for a good clean after landing?

It appears these are also group of high school students attending World Youth Day contracted Norovirus before boarding. Should be towards the end of the flight, they started ...

Elaine:
Just how serious is it Doctor?

Rumack:
Extremely serious. It starts with a slight fever and dryness of the throat. When the virus penetrates the red blood cells, the victim becomes dizzy begins to experience an itchy rash, then the poison goes to work on the central nervous system, severe muscle spasms followed by the inevitable drooling. At this point, the entire digestive system collapses accompanied by uncontrollable flatulence ( Oveur begins to fart). Until finally, the poor bastard is reduced to a
quivering wasted piece of jelly.

In the unlikely event that this happened to all the flight crew (i know that the pilots eat different foods) then what would have been the outcome? Is there any way that the plane could have autolanded itself without pilot intervention if this unlikely scenario had occurred?

I guess it wasn't serious enough to divert to the South Island of New Zealand as the flight just touches NZ.

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/QFA28 (Jul 31 flight I think).

So the question becomes did they contact the norovirus in Chile or Brazil? They probably transferred from a LAN flight in Rio de Janerio (GIG) to SCL where LAN/QF's transPacific hub in South America is.

With this route... It's quite LONELY in the South Pacific Ocean!

Snap. I also suffer with this. Trust me, if this broke out on a plane I was flying on then I can guarantee they would have diverted. The ultimatum would have been. "Get this plane down NOW before I open the bloody door and get down myself"

Awful, awful fear and if you don't have it you simply wouldn't understand it. With all the flights in the world this happens hardly ever which is nice to know.

I"m sorry, but if you have a stomach bug, don't you have an issue in the lower exit region as well? That would be my assumption.

I heard about this on the radio and luckily there were two doctors (one of which just happened to be a gastrointestinal specialist) and a nurse who were able to manage the situation with the help of F/As.

Yes, In Aerolineas Argentinas! years ago!

From Google: "Food safety is paramount in the airline catering industry. A case of mass food poisoning amongst the passengers on an airliner could have disastrous consequences. For example, on February 20, 1992, shrimp tainted with cholera was served on Aerolíneas Argentinas Flight 386. An elderly passenger died and other passengers fell ill. For this reason catering firms and airlines have worked together to provide a set of industry guidelines specific to the needs of airline catering. The World Food Safety Guidelines for Airline Catering is offered free of charge by the International Flight Service Association."

A TV news item said that 30 people were sick on a Qantas flight from Chile to Sydney. No mention that they picked up the bug before boarding which left the impression that it was the fault of Qantas. Typical Qantas bashing.

It has been mentioned that these people became ill as a result of meals eatern BEFORE flight and only members of the group became ill. However I do think this fact should be emphasized.

No. It would be possible for a flight attendant to be talked down by a pilot on the ground, but there's no functionality for the aircraft to take that action autonomously.

That is very good news. Glad they were able to help cabin crew. Definitely crew's insights on what procedures were followed to contain the situation will help entire industry.

That is interesting. Most of the main stream media immediately identified it is just one group had issues. Later CBS News reported these were high school students attending World Youth Day. As others pointed out it is a lonely flight. Crew has to improvise with what they have. It is obvious crew did a great job because no other passengers were not quarantined on arrival.

There's no way this was direct result of the food served on the flight. The toilets onboard would've been given good workout!

I've had Norovirus myself and would not wish it on anyone. Thankfully it's in and out pretty quickly, but it hits and it hits hard.

Would not want it in a pressurised environment!

First-time poster here - this topic prompted me to become a member.

I work as a translator and recently had to translate the protocol for a well-known European airline for the occurrence of such an incident, including the actions the flight crew should take, and announcements that should be made to passengers.

Although I am severely emetaphobic like a few others here, it was such an interesting text to work on, despite having to stave off a panic attack!

For this airline, no toilets were reserved for the unwell passengers, rather one lavatory was reserved for crew use only, obviously to mitigate the chances of crew infection. Also, no food was to be served to passengers in such an event, with the galleys restricted to passengers. It was not clear whether the event would result in diversion (I guess it depends on the severity of the incident), but it was interesting to see the multitude of different scenarios that flight crew have to prepare for.

Of course, these rules probably vary from airline to airline, but I hope the above is of some interest.

I guess so. Cruise ships do a thorough clean up after each norovirus outbreak, which is a common occurrence on motels on high seas.

Welcome to a.net and thanks for a summary of procedures in dealing with such incidents.

Do they isolate/quarantine ill passengers onboard? I was thinking may be they can move 30 or so ill passengers to upper deck. What happens to resting flight crew and cabin crew serving flight crew they have to avoid contact with sick passengers or risk cross contamination.

Are there any reports of any other passengers catching this as a result of the flight yet? We'd know by now.

Bearing in mind how contagious this is, if nobody else caught it then Its almost definitely food poising.

She had a day off but is back in service today, which would suggest that this was just a case of food poisoning. She would have been right to go after a scrub and airing.
