Wed Aug 07, 2013 9:49 pm

Etihad Airways has announced it's first A380 routes, they will fly the A380 to Sydney & Melbourne in 2014.

So in 2014 LHR will have A380s from:

SQ EK QR BA EY MH and QF .... And possibly TG and KE?

Well it was the airport the A380 was designed in mind for. A slot restricted airport who's demand is growing but isn't going to get any new runways. And it's no surprise. the UAE can't add to many more flights to Australia so upgaging capacity is a MUST and Etihad have grown many times more popular thanks to the tie up with Virgin Australia. It's worked really well for them. This is the only way forward under the current bilaterals.

No ! The A380 was certainly not designed for just one airport, but to connect the world's "megacities". Of course London fits into this category all the more with the constraints at its main airport.

Quoting Lufthansa (Reply 6):

I believe the UAE / Australia bilateral agreement can be re-negotiated. The trouble is that the traffic rights are shared between EK and EY and this latter does not want to "catch up but to be a winner", per the wording of its CEO.

Doubtful. MAN last time I checked received regular A332 service for the most part. If there was a capacity increase needed, then I'm sure we would have seen an upgrade to 77W or something by now. I'd say EK has the capacity for that area of the world covered for now.

Do the loads on LHR really warrant an A380 for Qatar and Etihad or is this just a vanity trophy in a way that Emirates isn't. We still see A330s on both and they're not exactly packed out IMHO.

London for political reasons, it gives Emirates a virtua two more A380s on LHR-DXB and gives QANTAS a fig leaf of diginity. I'm not criticising QF mind, any port in a storm.

All carriers based in the UAE are "official carriers". EY uses that reference only because AUH is the UAE's capital.

EY is no more the single "official carrier" of the UAE than any U.S. carrier is the official carrier of the U.S.

How anyone thought it was a good idea to put on the tail of a commercial airline is utterly beyond me. Yes the colours on the fuselage are nice and the airline have a great product onboard but the tail is a shocker. When will it go the way of their extremely confusing coral / emerald / pearl class designations?

Was it the afternoon EY 020 dep LHR 1445 service? As this is their weakest flight in terms of S/F out of LHR due to no onward connections to India/PAK/BKK/DAC/KTM/CMB/China/ICN/NRT etc.

MAN receives double daily A330 operations and in July the average LF was running into the mid 90's i believe. When taking the MEB3 into account, MAN is one of the highest in Europe for frequency to the middle east. I believe it was second behind LHR but that was while QR was at 2 daily. (Now 10 weekly)

EY may well put a 3rd daily at MAN before the A380, but it wont take long to show. Especially as EK are rumoured to be close to going 2 x A380 from MAN.

This December 2011 article contains this:

"As chief executive James Hogan meets Business Week, there is yet more good news, with the Australian signalling his intention to introduce up to two more daily flights within the next five years, as well as doubling the size of the call centre."

So, no A380 but we just need to wait for the next frequency announcement (to be followed swiftly by QR and EK doing likewise). Or any variation of that as what 1 airline reveals, the other 2 do similar.

Having their own terminology means one has to stop and think. Different cultures value different precious stones differently. So now one has a get past one's own cultural filter to remember if emerald or pearl is a higher class. It depends on which culture one is from on which is supposedly worth more.

Completely agree. The airports you list are much more likely to see the A380 before MAN. But, Whilst it isn't going to happen immediately, MAN will happen at some point In the short to medium term as opposed to the longer term. A rumour I'd heard around work a while ago now was MAN was to see one of the earliest frames but that obviously isn't the case. As David says, once capacity is ramped up by one carrier the other usually bites. And having 2 EK A380's per day might just push EY in changing their plans and bringing MAN forward 6-12 months, who knows. As we know, frequency is king but one of their established departures now could justify the increased capacity. I wouldn't mind having one of their 77W's back. Before MAN went 2 daily we had one daily 777 and it has to be the best looking aircraft in the skies!

EY will fail if a 3rd daily service to MAN or any other currently operated double daily EU point is increased because they have not yet adequately built up a proper 3rd departure hub wave bank at AUH airport for the 0200-0330 time frame bound to Asia. Currently, its 1445 departure from LHR (the 3rd daily flight) is the weakest amongst the 3 because it can only feed GCC, KUL and MNL. They need to first build their Indian Subcontinent network to double daily frequencies at least before deciding to do the same with double daily USA and 3rd daily EU flights.

Currently their mainland EU double daily flights to CDG MAN FRA connect nicely in both directions via AUH to all the key markets and they are flown by A332s/A333s. Before going to 3 daily, it would be wiser to upgrade to B77Ws first.

Well, talking about their names, Etihad is really the United version in the UAE while Emirates can be assimilated to American in terms of naming. I don't think either has any kind of flag carrier status though.

There's a slight difference in this case, we call it a "willy waving competition". Emirates are a commercial success, QATAR and ETIHAD less so, indeed I personally see Etihad as a vanity project. It's not run on a commercial basis, so whether they follow EK and send their A388s to MAN will be more political than commercially driven. Capacity dumping into an emerging market grows market share and visibility for future traffic, however doing the same in a maturing market still drives yields down with little upside. The growth of Emirates at MAN is not predicated on stealing existing traffic from BA/KL/AF/LH anymore, they're now engaged in a war with EY/QR. Remember QR blinked and cut capacity, Etihad are talking about deploying the A380. Only one of these decisions I would say makes any sense commercially.

EY sponsor Manchester City as they are desperate to raise their visibility on the world stage, and also of Abi Dhabi. Much of this is politics on stilts.

There may very well be a case of 'mines bigger than yours' going on. But both EY and EK see opportunities at MAN so surely you try to offer the same or a better product than your competitors to entice passengers? A lot of people flying east would prefer to fly on an A380 as opposed to an A330. I would. And if EY know that they may try to stop that shifting of passengers by putting The A380 on one of their two rotations.

As someone mentioned, they lack that third wave at AUH to successfully add a third flight from MAN, even though the airline has said that's in their plans. So upping capacity is the way to go at the moment. It would certainly be justified based on performance. Both flights arrived and departed with mid to high 90'% LF's yesterday, and that's been a story of the summer. Whether that's with an A380, A340 or a 77W who knows.

Etihad is actually the national airline of the UAE not Emirates. I much prefer them to EK livery and flying wise, just that little bit more subdued and classier than EK who need to shout about everything -much like BA/VS I suppose.

Cannot believe some of the comments on their livery - they have what is considered to be one of the nicest and most stylish in the industry. I love it.

Agreed about the livery. On their 77W's I don't think there is a better looking aircraft!

Absolutely ruined for me by the enormous advertising banner down the back, the same as Gulf Air. Beautiful scheme whos lines are destroyed by "FORMULA 1!" advertising.

Emirate have a semi-commercial existence where they are required to make money, Etihad are the (un-needed) flag carrier of the UAE. Spot the difference and see why one can afford to be more relaxed.
