LH B747-8i New Destination: MEX

Thu Aug 08, 2013 5:29 pm

Hi guys,

just saw it on the Lufthansa facebook site:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151755848244004&set=a.262827684003.141871.113994684003&type=1&theater

LH is flying to MEX with the Boeing 747-8i. The exact date isnt said there, but I checked on lufthansa.com, it is sometime in September 2013.

Congrats to MEX to get the passenger version now as well regularly. See you there soon

Very exciting. I would not imagine that MEX as a premium heavy route yet I see the 747-8i as a premium heavy aircraft. Interesting decision.

There was a test flight not too long ago and the 748 did well on that route.

There is a lot of premium traffic to MEX and a lot of cargo out of MEX. The 744 is struggling and usually departing with max allowable take off weight (restrictions due to the elevation of MEX) and the 748 is doing that a little better. So more payload possible.

From what I hear, MEX holds its own with premium traffic, but the amount of cargo that flight carries may very well make up for any lack of premium traffic.

Great news!!! Finally!!! I fly the route at least once a month and must say that both first and business classes are often packed. Lets see whether I am lucky enough to be on the inaugural flight...
I guess that the next urgent improvement is a proper lounge?

I was under the impression too MEX was always a struggling location to get people sitting up front. Then again I do not see a whole lot of VFR traffic going between FRA and MEX so could see it being heavy business traffic. Just waiting for if and when ORD will get a 748 coming our way.

The times that I had to fly from MEX to Europe, the front (and the back ) is always full or almost full (AM and AF ) Mexico is the second largest economy of Latin America, with plenty foreign companies and some local companies that have investments abroad, just curious, why would MEX not be able to fill premium cabins ?

As per Galileo:

02SEP 02SEP 1...... FRA MEX 1410 1905 LH 498 74H
03SEP 1234567 FRA MEX 1410 1905 LH 498 74H
01SEP 1234567 FRA MEX 1410 1905 LH 498 744

so in less than 1 month (if Galileo is correct...) !

Guys, Do't forget that LH used to have 2 daily frequencies in high season in the past just like AF, not only that but all flights from MEX to Europe are always packed full.

LH has also considered MEX as possible A380 destination but not possible due to airport infrastructure.

Always good news to hear of a B748 taking on a new destination! Hopefully with airports not able to take on the A380 will be more incentive for airlines to order the B748; especially that Boeing is working on a PIP for this bird.

That may be true. They are many large European companies in Mexico which should generate some premium demand !

Perhaps people get that impression from the fact that AF does not send to MEX from CDG aircraft with F, J, W and Y cabins, but rather only J and Y. In any event, there should be a quite robust demand for premium seats between Mexico and Germany. The amount of direct foreign investment coming from Germany in Mexico is huge, and the interests of large and midsized German companies in Mexico is diversified across all sectors of the economy. Plus, Mexico is by far the leading Latin American exporter, and even though Mexico's export capacity is mostly focused on the U.S. and Canada, a good amount of goods are sent to the U.E. This and the fact that Germany is the quintessential exports-oriented economy creates the need for premium seats and for cargo capacity both ways.
Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

Your imagination is not quite up to date. MEX has its very healthy load of premium passengers. You may find this shocking, but the three largest economies in LatAm, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico have, proportionally, a far larger ratio of premium clients for international flights than the US has.

You are aware also that the world's biggest fortune is in Mexico. There are plenty of premium clients south of the border. Do yourself a favor and say goodbye to your cliches of Latin America.
Keep calm and wash your hands.

I know VW has manufacturing in Mexico. I imagine that they alone can provide plenty of traffic. What other German or European companies have large business there? I could also see Sergio Perez's presence on the F1 grid potentially generating some attention from Mexican sponsors wanting to go to Europe during the F1 season.

The VW assembly plant in Puebla, with almost 18,000 workers, is the largest vehicle production facility in North America and one of the largest in the world. Chart in this item from 2011 when it produced over half a million cars. VW has 2 other plants in Mexico. One makes engines and the other trucks.

Another VW Group brand, Audi, is also building a plant in Mexico to make SUVs.

I'd think those travel in LH Cargo MD-11s. I think we get at least 7x, but who knows. Would be interesting what sort of cargo goes in LH vs LH Cargo.

There may be good things happening in trade between Germany and Mexico but it isn't driven by Foreign Direct Investment.

'In 2012, the FDI received in Mexico totaled $12.66 billion, 34.9% less than what was originally reported in the same period of 2011 ($19.43 billion).
...

The FDI came mainly from the United States (58.5%), Japan (13.1%), Canada (8.2%), Germany (5.9%), Netherlands (5.7%) and France (2.6%).'

That puts German FDI to Mexico at $750 million last year. Carlos Slim has bigger farts than that.

Yes it is. You are quoting the FDI for ONE year. For decades, the FDI came from the US, Japan and Germany. The others have become recent players and I´m not sure when Canada overtook the others. So you have to account for what is already invested in the country. That huge VW plant in Puebla was not built last year.

The 748i is perfect for LH´s ops in Mexico. Let´s hope for the A380 next.

it´s around 10 years back that DLH operated 10 B744 flights /week. They should top up their services to 14/week by adding A343/346 or even B744 out of FRA/MUC

Unless they make a special terminal for the A380 I doubt it, in terminal B (2) the triple 7 barely clears the tower lights when going to 5R, in fact 2 times they have knocked the lights...

And dont even consider the frankestein that the original terminal is, when the A380 flew in its world tour it was a logistics nightmare to move it around...

P.D. Sad because I would love to see the A380 at MMMX

Does the lack of a working tail tank make any difference here?

As other posters have stated, MEX indeed holds its own. And I've been to Mexico City...everyone should visit the city and not the usual tourist destinations (CUN, PVR, etc.). A couple of days in MEX will easily blow one's prejudice out of the water. Truly a "happening" city and it's easy to see that it is indeed a major financial hub for LATAM.

Please tell me they didn't yank it from FRA-BLR. If so, I will go on a hunger strike and call for a bandh and shut down the entire city of Bangalore!

By the way is it a 747-800 every day? My ticket says it's a 748 one way and a 744 the other.

P.S: My handle (created when the 744 was the king of the heavies) has now got to be one of the lamest on a.net
