Emirates And Mobile Phones

I recently went to Dubai and flew Emirates on a 777-300ER both ways.

On the flight from JNB they told us after take off that it was permissible to use your cell phone, just put it on silent not to disturb other passengers, but on the return leg they said phones had to remain off for the whole flight.

Any comments on this inconsistency?

Some aircraft have aeromobile installed some don't.

Thanks, the funny thing is, the flight we could use the phones on had the normal ICE system and the return flight, no phones, had the widescreen HD ICE so I thought the more updated aircraft would have more facilities.

Aeromobile and OnAir is expensive too.

Aeromobile has an agreement with AT&T and T-Mobile in the US and the rate to use your mobile on Aeromobile (including Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, etc.) is $2.50/minute. OnAir also has an AT&T agreement.

I guess anything is possible at 30,000 feet. On the US airlines with inflight internet I've heard people VoIPing calling (Skype, etc.) with video also.
