OS 93/94 Operated By VO For OS?

Mon Aug 19, 2013 7:42 am

I was searching flights between IAD and VIE, and both UA and OS websites list the transatlantic flights as operated by Tyrolean. WTF? OS website shows OS93/OS94 Operated by Tyrolean (VO). UA website shows UA6711 / UA6712 (Operated by Tyrolean DBA Austrian Airlines) Is this just a bizarre anomaly or has LH turned Tyrolean into the parent company?
Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

Repeating Bill142, yes VO is the operational company. It was OS to VO or get rid of OS by LH. Drastic cuts for pay.

But you will see full OS colours with a sticker "Operated by Tyrolean".

One single B777-200(ER) OE-LPB is still on the OS air operator certificate, all other aircraft with VO.

And why is that exactly? Traffic rights? And does that mean this one plane always needs to operate that route then?

I wonder why they don't change the name of VO to something more suitable for its current holding status (e.g. Austrian Holding), because as this topic shows, it's causing recurrent confusion as it is right now.

Similar stuff happened at both ZRH and BRU, but WITH a name change....

It was a drastic move taken by LH to keep Austrian Airlines solvent and transform it into a profit-making entity. Think SN or LX, the same thing essentially occurred with them with Delta Air Transport taking over much of the holdings for Sabena and Crossair essentially taking over Swissair's operation. All were done to make necessary changes so the new carrier wouldn't be burdened with the old one's liabilities, contracts...etc.

Thanks, but THAT I know.
The Question was: Why did they keep 1 long haul plane under the Austrian AOC?
I'd love the get more details on that particularity, because I haven't seen much elaboration on this issue.

I'll hazard a guess that it is to keep it active, but I'd like to know the logistical issues with this set-up.
