What Scheduled Route Was Terminated The Fastest?

Fri Aug 30, 2013 5:00 pm

I recently read the Wikipedia article about the De Kooy Airfield (DHR) and noticed that Loganair operated flights to Manchester and Norwich in March, 2013. However, because of extremely low demand, they were terminated just two weeks later.

Was there a schedule service that was terminated even faster? I think it's a fascinating subject.

I was quickly thinking about NW and the DFW-LGA route that was loaded and then dropped before it was ever flown. The only purpose was retaliation against AA for LGA-MSP but it was ill conceived and they later thought better of it.

That route never even started IIRC. Flights that were announced but never started would be another interesting thread. AA SJC-RDU would be one of these.

AA JFK-STN was however started and terminated very quickly.

AS SEA-DCA gets honorable mention. It started about 5 days before 9/11 and then DCA was closed for awhile and it moved to IAD, before resuming when DCA opened.

Actually it launched 6/3/10 and ended 8/1/10. It was cancelled before it started, so operated just under 2 months.

Ryanair flew Pisa-Tampere for only one week or so (two or three roundtrips - I do not remember exactly anymore) in Spring 2012. When I flew on the first departure we were about 15 passengers on board. I do not know why they chose to operate those first few flights and didn't cancel them when they canceled this new route. They still had plenty time left before 2 weeks notification deadline.

AF/DL JV operated LAX-LHR for a very short period. Maybe the shortest operated of a major long haul international flight?

I just thought of one: SNA-YVR on AS, the flight had to stop in SEA because SNA lacked customs, the route was then dropped

SNA-YVR, The first flight had to be diverted because SNA didn't have customs and the route was dropped. So the route terminated after about 3 hours of service.

AA MIA-VLN and S3 VLN-MIA come to my mind. Both routes were sold out after they were loaded into the system but due to some mystery with the Venezuelan Authorities the routes were cancelled a week or two before the first flight, leaving the passengers with no option to re-route through CCS.

Does anyone remember Cal Jet..... the public charter that flew from Los Angeles, Denver, Oakland, Houston and San Antonio to Mazatlan? I believe that the airline started flights around the middle of January of 2013, and flights were scheduled until mid-April. However, due to low bookings, the Sinola Group in Mazatlan that was contracting these flights cancelled on Cal Jet due to low bookings, and Cal Jet in turn ceased flights by the first week of February. A whole 2-3 weeks here.

Didn't UA announce at one time sometime around 2000 that it would have a DEN-SJU weekly flight, only to get cancelled due to 9/11 before the flight even started?

DEN has had its share of short-lived flights as well as a couple of cancelled-before-they-even-started flights.

A short-lived one from POS - BW flew POS - GRU for around 4 months in 1996. The route used an MD83 which called at MAO for fuel.

BW also had one which never started a few years later. They planned POS - BGI - ATL starting in 2001 but this was blocked after Trinidad and Tobago was downgraded to Category 2 by the ICAO.

DLs ATL-NBO service for sure. Inaugural flight was actually at the gate when the flight was axed (albeit it wasn't DL that cancelled it, but guess it should still count)

AS YVR-SNA in 2002... announced and sold the route, started operating it, and only then noticed that there were no customs facilities at SNA. Even though pax precleared at YVR, they need agents at the other end to be in compliance with federal rules.

So AS discontinued the route after one day. Oops.

VX LAX-YYZ and SFO-YYZ

One that ended before it started - AC YVR-DEL due to start October 2001. Cancelled due to 9/11.

DL's announced RDU-CDG comes to mind, although I don't know if it was ever loaded into the system. Granted, AA operated RDU-Paris in the 90s, but IIRC it was RDU-ORY, so CDG would have been a brand new route.

In terms of routes that actually "took off" (no pun intended) it sounds like the honors go to LHR-TIP and YVR-SNA. Any others that only managed one flight before being canned?

Just out of curiosity, was that route a casualty of the financial crisis/recession (the article says it is, but how accurate is that?), or was it doing badly from the get-go? I wonder if 9W might try again once the economy improves...? The article says it's temporary, but that was in 2008...any more recent info?

DL FWA-MCO, back when DL had the MCO focus city. Cancelled only days before the launch due to DL filing for Chapter 11. Was to be a daily Freedom ERJ-145 service.

On a brighter note, G4 did announce FWA-SFB a year later... and that flight's stuck around ever since.

I vaguelly recall there was a TWA timetable in the late 70's promoting a new STL-HNL 707 route. I don't think it ever got started but I'm not clear on why. I know they started phasing out the 707 around that time and it may have contributed to the cancellation.

I don't understand this. Both AC and WS have flown scheduled non-stop flights from Canada (pre-cleared) to SNA.

This is correct. US Customs/Immigration always retains the right to inspect an inbound aircraft and passengers even though pre-cleared. For this reason, Customs/Immigration Officers must be present for the arrival. (although, not necessarily near the aircraft, usually they remain in their airport office).
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!
