Hawaiian To Offer Ipad Mini's On All 767 Flights

Sat Aug 31, 2013 3:19 am

Hawaiian Airlines will become the only US carrier to offer Ipad Mini's on all 767 flights starting on September 1st.
The Ipad mini will replace the Digi-Players that have been in use on HA 767 flights for several years. This will be a substantial upgrade to HA's IFE as the Ipad mini's will hold dozens more movies, movie tracks, and TV shows than the out dated digi players.
The Ipad mini's will be free of charge in first class and will be offered in economy for $15.00 if purchased at the gate area, or $17.00 on board the aircraft if they are not already sold out.
HA currently flies 767's to the following cities from HNL:

Fukuoka, Sendai, and Sapporo in Japan
Incheon, South Korea,
Brisbane, Australia
Pago Pago, American Samoa
Papeete, Tahiti
Seattle
Oakland
Sacramento
San Jose
Phoenix

And to the following cities from Maui:

Oakland
San Jose
Seattle

Awesome service upgrade by HA; the iPad mini is a terrific device and will delight their customers.

While AS is still evaluating which handheld unit to go with for their streaming AVOD, I'm hopeful they'll go with the iPad mini as well.

It is a let down when one is paying for F, and getting a dig-e player for 6 hour flight, I often run out of things to watch, with the rather limited options, and as I usually fly AS, I am now more inclined to explore HA offerings next year, with the minis and the 330 flying into PDX. I hope AS upgrades that part of the flying experience soon.

A great move by HA, I remember flying HNL-PDX last December on a HA 763, and reading about the AVOD on the 330, and feeling kind of bummed that we were stuck on a 767, even though the 767 is one of my favorite aircraft ever made.

DL'S 767-300ER LAX-HNL flight PTV'S are free in coach all the music and movies you want....I was surprised that HA charged for almost everything on there PTV'S in coach, even charge for music...So even though HA has a nice A-330 that is were it ended for me but i would also say service was awesome!!

Yes and HA was either a dig-e player for rent in Y or a free main screen movie, like the 70s and 80s. But my days of flying DL to and from Hawaii are over, I'd much rather go non-stop to any of 4 islands than make long connections in LA where I won't get upgraded.

I agree HA has great F or Y service, they really make the vacation start from the moment you are onboard.

I think its a great idea but $15 seems like a lot. I would have though pulling out the inflight AVOD would save on weight and maintenance making it pay for itself. I think The business class airlines that flys NYC-PARIS, Open Skies does this on their 757s

I wonder has HA talked about offering 802.11n and eventually 802.11ac Wi-Fi on their planes. That would make it possible to BYOD (bring your own device) and owners of iPads and Android tablets can enjoy inflight entertainment on their own.

Seriously? Aren't there like 70 or 100 movies on those things? I'm not going to say an iPad mini may not be an improvement, but it seems that lack of content isn't a problem with dig-e players.

My opinion I guess.

I assume that the iPad minis will have their speakers disabled somehow. I would hate to be sitting near someone who was watching a movie with the built in speakers rather than using headphones, but I am sure that there would be thoughtless people doing this if given the option.

What a substantial upgrade indeed, and I hope this is a successful investment for them. One drawback though, I wish it would be offered for free in Y for international flights.....

They (HA) didn't pull anything out of the airplane.
The 767's were delivered aisle monitors and large screens on the bulkhead.
They are handing these out or renting them to supplement this service.

The Ipad Mini's will be complimentary in Y Class on HA flights to and from Fukuoka, Japan.
HA's flights from HNL to both KIX and HND utilize Airbus 330 aircraft and have complimentary AVOD at every seat.

Much cheaper, lighter, and easier to upgrade than installed IFE. This is the future. And if you don't like the $15 fee, bring your own, which many people do already.

I would imagine that the FA's have to keep careful track of what passengers get the iPad's, to make sure all get collected at the destinations.

I agree. Too bad for the IFE makers. I do think certain airlines will keep IFE for a long time to come, such as EK.

This is where WN is headed I think. I am totally fine with this model if it helps keep fares low. The problem is that satellite bandwidth for internet is pricey. If someone can launch a few more birds affordably, we could see cost and coverage improve a great deal. Its still around $8-10k per lb to LEO. Maybe SpaceX and can cut that to 5k

Not really. They just need to adapt their business model. They can now market onboard WiFi hubs with an entire IFE selection that any passenger can watch on their own device. It would require a lot of on-board bandwidth, but only minimal communication with the ground (credit card transactions, basically).

And it's not as if seatback IFE is dead. Most new long-range aircraft are being delivered with it, still. It has definite advantages, like no need to worry about batteries. Also, for touch-to-order food/drink service, a physical address in seat 14D is very helpful.

Umm, they sure as hell do. I flew business class on AA to FRA one time, and they wouldn't let ANYONE off the plane until someone returned a missing set of Bose Noise Cancelling head phones. It was rather annoying.

I hope they clean them in between flights. These things that get handed from pax to pax have a habit of becoming mobile petri dishes.

Yes seriously. Just because there are several titles available, doesn't mean they are first run, or even to everyones taste. The last main screen movie HA showed on our 767, was the latest ice age movie, not my taste, but good for general audiences.

The downside to touch-to-order on those carriers who offer it is it diminishes the interaction with the inflight staff somewhat; in some cases (not all, mind you) they're huddled back in the galley waiting for orders to come in rather than performing traditional service.

From the ten or so rentals for my kids on HA flights, they give you headphones when you rent the Dig-e player. I would surmise that the same would be true with the Ipad mini's.

Agree, The last flight I was on seemed that more than half of the movies were for kids.

While this is a great idea, my family will all bring their own Ipad's and Ipad mini's for our next trip as I can totally control the content and know that I will have games and movie that I want on all devices.

They are encased in a black, durable cover with the Hawaiian Airlines logo on the cover. Like you say...should be easily cleaned with a wipe of some kind I'd imagine

I played with the prototype some time before it was released and found it a great gadget. Our customers will love their portability, as the digi-players were not so much!

This year we are taking AS as this is the last companion ticket I could use in F, from now on AS only allows Y for that $99.00 companion ticket for the AS visa card. Next year AS will have upgraded IFE I hear, also HA now flies the 330 here with good AVOD, it actually may be a tough decision who we take.

One of the perks of being on the inside, that's cool! I do not like the dig-e players, they are heavy, they don't sit well on the tray table, but that is where you got to rest them, I look forward to flying on HA again, unfortunately just inter island this time around, but at least in F. I wonder if HA offers bonus miles for paid F?

To my knowledge, the only 767s that got a refurb were the 4 ex-DL ships that HA bought. The interiors were gutted and replaced with the Heath Tecna mod. The ex-LTU ships were delivered to HA with LTU interiors (black leather seating) but HA eventually replaced or re-covered the seating to HA standard years later. All other 767s are still flying in their original factory delivered interiors with overhead IFE, no powerports and of course now either the dig-e-players or these new iPad Mini's to replace the dig-e-players.

I know of at least 3 767s have left the HA fleet, all of them were leased by HA. Two of them went to AC and are now with the AC Rouge operation. The third which is an ex-LTU ship is stored somewhere. And as azjubilee mentioned, the fleet slowly continues to shrink as more A332s join the fleet and A350s and A321neo joins the fleet in the years to come.

I will miss the 767 and the 2-3-2 Y seating, but I have been spoiled by the A332 and can't wait to experience the HA A350 and A321neo.

I don't really understand why everybody thinks that the Ipad or similar instead of IFE is so great.
So far i know there is no provision to attache the Ipad to the seat rest.
I don't like to hold the Ipad in my hands or on the table the whole time.
Not the mention how this suppose to work while having diner.
But i have to admit that i never flew on a airplane with this system.

It will be sad to see the 767s leave the fleet    But, that's how the airlines make money. I can't wait to try HA and their fleet, and the A350s and A321NEO. Hopefully we can get service with an A321 here at KSNA?

Android fanboyism aside, I think the Nexus 7 would have been a better choice. It's widescreen, for one, and has a higher resolution display. The iPad mini is a really nice device, though.

It will be sad to see the 767s leave the fleet    But, that's how the airlines make money.

I think HA is still making money with the 763s...

They're making money with them, but as fuel prices continue to rise, the economics of flying an older, less fuel efficient fleet just doesn't make sense. For some I.E Delta, it does. They also have to cater to their passengers. Hopefully these birds will find a home with another carrier.

Me too, the one we flew last December looked to be in good condition inside and out, of course that is not all there is, but I do think HA is doing an excellent job of maintaining their aircraft by how they appear to my critical eye. HA is great all the way around.

The 767 is my favorite aircraft ever, I absolutely love the 2x3x2 seating, I wish there were more planes with that lay out. I'd love any plane where you have such a great chance of getting an aisle or a window seat. I took many a 762 or 763 of AAs to Europe in Y & J, I took OZ 763s HNL-SEL-BKK-SIN-BKK-SEL-HNL all in J in 94, and (Koningen Beatrix) MP 763 SEA-AMS-SEA for a weekend, just to name a few.
