First Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Flight (Sept 17, 2013)

Tue Sep 17, 2013 5:59 pm

G'day

If they are truly waiting tor chase planes thy better get out of that business. I mean these can be scheduled to the minute, so the delay must be for other reasons

Nice takeoff. The tail looks kind of small in proportion to the rest of the plane.

On a side note, I'm watching this on my tablet, sitting on a train homeward bound. Isn't technology amazing!?

That's a drogue that's used to calibrate instrumentation, IIRC. They have a spool of line that they can reel them in and out on, and they measure how much tension there is on the line.

Do they have them on the Wing Tips as well, or just the tail?

At that distance it really is striking how much the 787-9's proportions look like those of the 767-300. The plane is bigger in all dimensions, of course, but the resemblance is pronounced.

Nonsense. The exact time of first flight of a derivative will have no impact on shareholder value

It would seem that CNBC disagrees with you:

"Boeing shares hit record high as new 787 lifts off

The 787-9 flight took place as shares of the Dow component climbed to their highest level ever, topping $117.00 a share.

They closed Tuesday at $117.11, up $1.44 or 1.24 percent, on the day.
"
...but who knows, it could just be a fluke

What a beautiful plane. The wing flex is amazing!

Looks like the 787-9 just flew past a Boeing 787-8. That would make for a great picture.

Congrats to Boeing!

I'm not getting any video feed at the moment, just the neat Google Earth view. I'm thinking they just took it down until the -9 lands, but is it working for anybody? Maybe it's just me.

Like the 767 before, the 762 looked stubby compared to the 763, the 789 looks to be the perfect proportion. Can't wait to see it in person. Hopefully AC will bring up one of the test planes on one of Boeing's meet and greet trips. With 3 airlines bringing in the 788 to YYZ it is still nice to see but getting a bit old school, I am looking forward to the 789.

T-33's are leaving BFI.

I can't believe I didn't put it together at the time...I was in a C172 leaving BFI this morning when they were getting clearance for takeoff. We left just before they did! A Boeing test flight left PAE when we were between Edmonds and Kingston about half an hour later but I'm pretty sure I would have noticed a "Boeing 1" call on the comm. Pretty sure it was BOE540. In any case, cool timing.

Great to see the -9 getting into the air finally. She's definitely a looker!
