Cubana Leases Air Tahiti Nui A340

Mon Sep 16, 2013 2:13 am

Air Tahiti Nui (TN) has wet-leased one of its A340s to Cubana (CU). The A340 will operate from Havana to Madrid, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo along with Cubana's 3 IL-96s.

Here's the first picture of the A340 operating for CU in MAD.

Interesting. I guess they need a little extra lift ad no doubt TN gave them a steal of a deal to earn some extra cash.

Yes TN has excess capacity so 1 A340 is always available for lease. They recently finished a multi-month contract with Air Calin. Prior they fly for UK Air Force also, and other parties.

Lucky Madrid spotters.

More comfortable yes, but they miss the novelty of flying on an Ilyushin Il-96! As much as I love Airbus A340s, I'd rather go on the Ilyushin. Too rare a plane to miss flying on. I think most a.netters would agree with me.

Most passengers will notice the improved comfort though.

I hope they don't overpaint the beautiful TN livery.
I also hope CU keeps up maintenance (both of the critical parts of the aircraft and the interior) while it's in their hands.

Sounds like a good idea, the Il96 has a fuel burn of 'up to' 7.3tonnes/ hr (i've readu as much as 12tonnes/ hr, but maybe that is with the older engines)., whilst the A340 does around 6tonnes/ hr
Even if the Il96 is paid for, this might still be financially worth it (especially with poor maintenance schedules)

From OP - " wet-leased one of its A340s to Cubana"; so TN will be responsible for ALL maintenance, unless it is a very odd wet lease. It may not be the same aircraft all the time, the actual aircraft could be rotated within the TN fleet.

1.There isn't a true "socialist" state
2. They need to pander to bourgeois foreigners visiting them

For the same reason Supreme Soviets rode around in Zils while everyday Muscovites took the metro.

F-OLOV did not received the new Air Tahiti Nui product, it would make sense to get this aircraft out of the fleet to provide a uniform product across the 4 aircraft in service.

Get your Il-96 ride while you can. Aeroflot don't have any in the schedules after Oct 31 (or Nov 30, can't remember - but it's this year!). I am doing a day trip to Larnaca in the next few weeks to get the '96 in my logbook. But would love to do a transatlantic flight in one as well. They stopped coming to Gatwick cos the loads ended up so low, like 56 passengers. The market isn't huge and BA fly there with a 777, much more palatable for a non-a.netter. Virgin do it seasonally as well.

I was about to suggest here to read Animal farm by George Orwell but you were faster.

Let's see how long is going to last, Let's see if Air Tahiti is not force to stop like others before, air europa was with the B767 and Novair with the A333.

I suppose this question is worthy of a separate thread, but what are your thoughts on TN "right-sizing" their fleet, i.e., replacing the A340 with smaller aircraft? I suppose for political reasons they will be forced to wait for the A350 rather than order 787s, n'est-ce pas?

What are their current load factors with the A340?

Would the A350 or 787 possibly allow them to serve a few more destinations and actually turn a profit, which has been difficult for them with the A340?

But, another question... Given the isolated location of Tahiti, does TN still fly through ETOPS-restricted airspace on some of its routes, or could they fly all of their routes ex-PPT using an ETOPS-rated twin jet?

How does this not incur sanctions violations from the USA since they are engaging in commerce with Cuba and in particular its government? These guys fly daily into LAX so its not like they can just skip the US market like Iran and North Korea. I don't think you can do wet leases to Iran Air otherwise I am sure they would have done it long ago.

Lease commenced about 2-weeks ago. It should last 3-months and covers flying to EZE, MAD and GRU.

I think TN replaces a 767 they had been using during the summer.

France enjoys regular relations and business dealing with Cuba. Matter of fact France is one of Cuba's larger trade partners.
You might recall Cubana had 3 DC-10's during much of the 1990s which were from AOM French Airlines.

There is some type of loop hole, because Cubana can only lease aircrafts thru airlines and not thru a leasing company. The US embargo has some weird wording allowing Cubana to lease thru a third company (ex. An airline) .

I just read through much of that thread. I saw discussions of political interference and mismanagement. I saw figures for market share percentages of competing carriers (e.g., NZ), percentage of traffic by country of origin, and other figures, but I saw nothing about replacing the A340 with a smaller aircraft (aside from one passing mention of using an A330 to AUK/LAX ), nor anything about TN's load factors on the A340.

If these figures are found elsewhere within that thread, I could not find them. So, I am still hopeful that someone can respond to my questions.
