Fuel Fire At BOS

Just got a report of a fuel tank on fire at BOS. Boston fire transmitting a second alarm. Will provide source as soon as it becomes available

Whew! Could have been a terrible tragedy! Wonder how long the fuel system will be down?

As a result of the hydrant system shutdown, there is no fuel available at BOS until further notice. ...Recommend that any flights for the rest of the day and first flights in the morning plan on no fuel being available.

Flights are departing to nearby airports to fuel: PVD, BDL, MHT, SWF, PHL, ISP, ROC. I see flight plans departing or departed for these cities for fuel.

I have a friend flying JFK-BOS-AMS-JRO tomorrow. I just texted her letting her know that her AMS flight may be affected. Hope it won;t but better safe than sorry.

A Delta flight 349 just left BOS for MSP and will be making a fuel stop in SYR.

We got a lot of flights up to Maine from BOS to refuel last night. Before I saw this thread, I almost thought there was a Flightaware glitch.

PWM had five B6 flights come through.

FLT 687 to LAX
1209 to JAX
777 to LAS
993 to DEN
487 to SEA

BGR saw..

BAW202 to LHR
DLH421 to FRA
EIN138 to DUB
DLH425 to MUC
EIN136 to DUB
BAW214 to LHR
SWR52 from ZHR to BOS
BAW239 from LHR to BOS
BAW215 From LHR to BOS
DLH420 from FRA to BOS

And PSM even had diversions. First time I've ever seen scheduled diversions to Pease.

JBU321 to PBI diverted PSM
BAW212 to LHR diverted to PSM
Atlas Air 188 to CVG diverted to PSM

Last one in and out of Manchester was a SATA A310. I know these planes came in from Boston, but not sure if they went back there afterward...or just continued to their destinations. UA 737-800 went to LAX and a Virgin A320 went to SFO from Manchester; not sure of IceAir or SATA.

If they were taking off from BOS they would've continued to their destinations. No reason to backtrack to BOS, especially as the diversions are to take on fuel.

Well yes and then no!

BA203 (LHR-BOS) operated by 744 G-CIVE was diverted to BDL as there was a capacity restriction at BOS because of the fire. 'VE later completed its flight by operating BDL-BOS. But it had not refuelled at BDL for the return flight to LHR. So when it later operated the return BOS-LHR flight it diverted to BGR to refuel for the trans-Atlantic flight.

So "yes". It diverted to BDL because of the BOS fuel fire. But "no". It did not divert to BDL to refuel. It refuelled at BGR.

As of this morning, BOS is back into normal operations. The faulty pump was bypassed and the pressureized system back online.

Interesting. Why not refuel at BDL and avoid the later stop in BGR? Would that put it at above its MLW?

Because it would have been to heavy to land at BOS with sufficient fuel to fly BDL-BOS-LHR?

Bangor got some additional stops (BA 744s, Aer Lingus A333s) yesterday, possibly because fuel is dirt cheap there.
