Reece said that Fly Jamaica owns its own aircraft – a Boeing 757. “And we are in the process of buying a Boeing 767,” she continued, noting that it would take three months from the time of acquisition of the aircraft to the time it is allowed into service.
She noted that the airline has an arrangement with an aircraft leasing company which would allow for a plane to be supplied should anything go wrong with the aircraft owned by Fly Jamaica. “We will be doing long-haul flights of three hours and above and we hope to have partnerships with other air carriers for short haul flights,” she said. “We want to form an alliance with all the other airlines in the region because we feel that there is enough business in this part of the world for everybody,” she said.
Reece said that while there are no plans to go to Heathrow or Gatwick, there are plans to add Fort Lauderdale and northern Brazil as destinations. She said persons could call the company’s call centres which would be open on a 24-hour basis.
Asked how it is that the airline will make itself competitive, Reece said Fly Jamaica is trying to offer a lot more than a normal, traditional legacy airline will offer. “For example we are going to be doing a lot of events between here and Jamaica. We are planning gospel concerts and [other events]. We have a gospel concert in Jamaica in October and we will be inviting everybody in Guyana, Toronto and New York to come. It is going to be huge,” Reece said.

The
FJ experience
In the meantime, the executives were enthusiastic about what they say is the Fly Jamaica experience; selling tourism in a family atmosphere. Board member and
FJ partner Christine Steele said that some 25 flight attendants have been in training for more than a week now and are being groomed for excellent customer care.
She said that passengers can expect a family atmosphere with the attendants being of various ethnic backgrounds and bringing their own uniqueness. Steele said, “We are trying to let everyone who comes on board feel like family. Each day we speak about how important our customers are. The difference with
FJ is that we are going to be customer friendly, very customer friendly.”
Customers can be guaranteed a whole new flying experience with the features added to the
FJ package. Reece explained that passengers can shop on board the flight and not the ordinary stuff, but jewelry, phones, SIM cards, phone cards and other such items.
She said arts and craft of Jamaica and Guyana will be promoted, along with the countries’ various cuisines. Passengers might even be graced by the famous chefs who are likely to be featured in the airlines cooking magazine.
Fly Jamaica will also have constant promotions where persons win free trips, inclusive of accommodations. They can win free concert trips, while the company says it will be promoting shows with big name artistes in the ports that they travel. Additionally couples can get affordable marriage packages once they fly with
FJ.
Reece said they are working with hotels about ‘resort weddings’ so that a couple can get discounts once they fly with the airline. Tours are also a part of the deal. The company is to offer sports tours, cooking tours etc.
It is hoped that Guyana and Jamaica can trade their tourism, Reece said. She stated that the Jamaican people are excited to be sharing their airline with Guyana in that while the Jamaicans can enjoy Guyana’s lush green rainforest, Guyanese can enjoy their sun-kissed sparkly blue water beaches.

She added that the airline is in the process of buying a 767 craft which will definitely help its present 757 plane.
On the issue of drug trafficking through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), the Fly Jamaica executive called for a more robust system and better paid persons to avoid being lured by quick cash. She said the airline would like to see a secure system that is more efficient and more reliable, but it is all based on the salaries people are paid and the level of people being employed.
She said it is unfortunate that Guyana has so many issues with drug smuggling, but assured that Fly Jamaica would be making efforts to ensure that drugs are not placed on its flights, though admittedly, “it’s going to be a very difficult job to keep on top of.”
Fly Jamaica has so far employed 40 Guyanese, including two pilots. The airline plans to buy an additional aircraft to serve more long-haul routes like Fort Lauderdale and Brazil next year, and partner with smaller carriers like LIAT.
The airline plans to have handicraft, cookbooks, telephones, SIM cards, Top-up sold aboard its aircraft.
Fly Jamaica Airways began with a dream to create a truly regional airline using local talent, and with an emphasis on providing a truly local experience to its customers. The dream is for a full-service local airline that would bring the Diaspora and the world home to the Caribbean.
