Is It Logical To Expect LH To Send The 748 To JFK?

Hey all! I was watching a LH 744 fly over my house going into JFK earlier this evening and it got me to thinking. LH used to send the a380 into JFK seasonally until SQ starting doing so as well. Now, the two have seemed to right-size the capacity on the market in having SQ fly the a380 daily, and LH flying two daily 744s. While it is great to see the Queen of the Skies flying over around sunset, their days are numbered.

So, as LH begins to phase out their 747-400 fleet, is it a logical thought that they may one day bring the 747-8i to JFK?

I see that LH has two configurations on their 747-400s, one carrying 322 passengers in an 8F/80J/234Y config., and the other seating 344 in an 8F/66J/270Y config. I haven't the slightest idea which is operated into JFK, but I figure it is the first one, as I'd imagine JFK is a pretty premium-heavy destination for LH. Their 747-8i's are laid out in an 8F/80J/298Y config seating 386 passengers, and an 8F/92J/262Y configuration seating 362 passengers. This translates to ~40 more passengers on the 748i than the 744, while maintaining a similarly-sized premium cabin(s).

They have figured out that the a380 (seating 526 in an 8F/98J/420Y configuration), in combination with SQ's a380, is a bit too much capacity for the market, so could the 748 be the answer once more examples come into service? I'd imagine that their higher efficiency makes them more attractive than the 744s and the a346s, which they used into JFK last summer.

Any help and any insight whatsoever is greatly appreciated, and please tell me if I'm completely off base in my analysis. It's just thought that popped into my head!

I guess sooner or later she will come to JFK regularly once we have more 748's in the fleet. JFK is a difficult market as many airlines from Europe have many daily flights to JFK and it is a huge competition. We have 9 frames so far and more to follow next year.

With all the 744 Lufthansa flies to the USA why would it not be a good idea for JFK to get 748's ?

maybe even FRA-EWR would be upgraded to 748 too (if the airport and Terminal B could handle it)

It is an option as well. But currently we do not have enough 747-8's to fly to more destinations.

But next year again new airplanes will join.

Newark is ready (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/12/14/faa-grants-waiver-allowing-boeing-747-8-at-newark-airport/). LH already operated its 747-8 there on August 15 2013 on LH402/403 because their 747-8 rotation had become a little mixed up.

I can't tell if your serious or playing a joke. But every time someone I know uses IIRC, it stands for "If I recall/remember correctly"...

Anyway, a recent threat placed the final retirement of the LH 744s by 2024. The 777X program should also be up and running by then. For what it's worth, I'm betting LH alternates between 744s and *maybe* seasonal A380 upgauges until the 777-9s arrive in the fleet.

"If I remember correctly" should be the most common long form.

I guess so as well. There are 2 daily flights to JFK, currently twice 744. But this can change again to 1x 380 and 1x 330 or 1x 380 and 1x 744 (thought that would be a lot of seats to sell). Maybe with the new configuration (no F class and Premium Economy Class) this could all change again.

As it looks like yes. But the airport is rather tight and at this point no 744's are allowed to pass each other on taxiways A and B. But I am pretty positive that the 748 come to ORD soon.
