The Arrow Points The Way

Wed Sep 25, 2013 10:39 pm

Long story short, back in the day before electronic navigation, the USPS set up airways using lighted towers, some of which lit up arrows to point the way as the airway zig-zagged across the country. Nearly all of the towers were destroyed for use as scrap metal in WWII, but many of these arrows still exist over 60 years since they were last used. Unforuntately, many have since been destroyed by development (farming, housing, etc.,) but in more remote places, they still exist (In one case, there's one that's actually in the middle of a city.)

I've started building a list of these old arrows, and have found a few via old maps and available satellite imagery, but boy, these buggers are hard to find if they exist still since the available maps might be off (sometimes, WAY off) as far as the arrow's actual location, and available satellite/overhead imagery in these places aren't anywhere near as sharp as those from more populated areas,

Anyone seen any?

Here in Atlanta, they once painted a giant yellow arrow on top of Stone Mountain that pointed to the direction of ATL and it was maintained for a number of years and can barely be seen today (You can make it out on Google Earth if you zoom in enough.) as it is one of the highest points in Metro Atlanta and isn't completely covered with trees. I'm not sure if they ever put another other types of navigation aid on top of the mountain over the years (it is such a dominant landmark in the area, that it kinda functions as one on its' own).
