A very small (but apparently heavily fueled) plane has crashed near Bolingbrook's Clow Int'l Airport...

It's difficult to tell but from the one visible wingtip that looks like a Columbia or possible Cirrus.

This is right by my house. I was going to be in that spot about 15 minutes later, as I had a prescription to pick up at the drugstore next door (I had to transfer my pickup to another one nearby.) There isn't much info that is available. You can't get very close to the scene, and what's left is basically just a bunch of burnt scrap. One person is a dead and the other is at the Adventist hospital about a half mile away.

This is the second crash in about five years at this airport, and the previous crash was about 50 feet away.

The accident occurred @ 17:15 local. There was an SR22 scheduled to land @ 17:12 - N406DC from 27K. Don't know if that is the plane that was involved in the accident or not.

The accident seems to have taken place about a third of a mile due east of the Runway 36 threshhold. Perhaps he had an engine failure on takeoff or while doing touch-and-gos and on climbout decided to turn around... never a good idea...

In any event, it's surely not a coincidence that this happened so close to an airport.

That sounds so... detached.   It's right by Chipotle Grill, Andy's Frozen Custard, Walgreens, and Chase Bank!

Anyhow, no, it is not a coincidence. As I said, second accident in about five years in this same spot.

The 6 o'clock news was showing a parking lot by Chase Bank. They said that two people were taken to the hospital with injuries, so hopefully they will walk away fine from the incident. Some guy on the phone was saying that the plane was doing training flights, not sure how he knew that.

I've heard that the pilot is in critical condition and his wife, the passenger has passed. Also that the plane was owned by a company in Kentucky.

The touch and go thing is probably out of the question because they don't allow touch and goes at this airport. I've personally flown into and out of it (I got my private there) and it can be a little bit more difficult to judge everything there because of all the buildings around.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and everyone close to them.

27K is Georgetown, KY. N406DC is owned by GDK International in Georgetown, KY. I wonder if this is the plane:
