Skytrax Rating: 4 Star For AF Short Haul C CLass!

Wed Oct 02, 2013 8:33 pm

I could believe my eyes when I read that Skytrax ratings gave 4 stars for AF Short Haul C Class.
4 stars for what exactly? An economy seat class with a slightly better legroom, and a blocked middle seat?

To compare, they also give 4 stars for SQ Short Haul C Class... There is not even a comparison between both...

This is just another example of why Skytrax ratings are a joke and not to be taken seriously.

There is no way that any of the euro carriers C classes can be rated even 2 stars. They are even worse than the USA domestic F class seats and service.

Skytrax is worthless and should be ignored.

I flew AF in domestic economy CDG-BCN once.....the meal was absolutely superb....on a 2 hour flight.

The staff was very friendly, and the seats were very comfortable.

Not to mention my only trip on an A318

By and large, this is correct.

I don't think that was "domestic"!

That was Air France right,

Flying from France to Spain is intercontinental but still not what I would call domestic.

I flew AF and it sucked and I for one do not mean the cleanliness of the aircraft but the service or lack there of.

[Edited 2013-10-03 09:23:09]

Skytrax is not a very good harbinger of the airline quality.

I think the service on the Euro carriers is better. You get a proper meal on nearly every flight, even those less than an hour. By contrast, many of the US carriers only offer a "snack basket" or small plate of salad, etc. KL, LX, AF, etc. all offer meals on all flights, and of course free-flowing drinks. You also get lounge access.

The hard product is of course a different story, however it's somewhat mitigated by the fact that the overwhelming majority of European flights are less than 2 hours.

Although I am a fan of AF, I cannot imagine why they would get this for the European short-haul C class. I just flew roundtrip to Munich earlier this week on an A318 both ways... The seats were those cheap economy ones with no extra room and the seats didn't even recline.
That being said, the service was exactly how I like it : very professional and not in your face (as on a number of carriers). Minimum amount of fuss, but overall very pleasant.
But please get rid of the seats... feels like Ryanair (even if the centre seat is blocked). I prefer the European C class on their A319/20/21s where the seats are more comfortable, they recline, and the armrest widens out giving a little more space.

But there's better food available at the airport anyway! Getting a meal on a 1 hour flight is more like punishment than service - you have to put up with all the trays and junk for almost the entire flight, all for worse food than you could have gotten just before or just after.

What's most critical to me in short-haul is the seat. The Euro-standard economy seat with an empty seat next to you, ridiculously labeled as "business" or "first-class", can only be looked at derisively. On a short flight I'd much (much!) rather be in a US carrier seat that is true 2+2 in a narrow body, with good pitch and a wide armrest. Warm nuts and a drink is that the food service I want or need on anything less than ~2 hours.

Only on longer flights does the service and food start to matter to me.

Try Aegean A320's! ! ! 4-abreast. Wide seats with lots of legroom. (I believe a few A320 from Olympic are configured the same). Excellent food and possibly the best looking Flight Attendants in the business (the male ones as well, which pisses me off LOL)

I've had the great pleasure of flying them many times Brussels-Athens, Athens-Larnaca.

Regarding Air France. Well, their intra Europe C-class is crap. The only positive is that you are in the front of the aircraft and you get pretty good FF miles. Not worth the money. It's the same standard as SAS old Business Class (which is now gone)

I still think Luftwaffe's C-class within Europe is OK. Not much extra legroom, but middle seat is blocked-off. The food is EXCELLENT, which is great on longer flights. Not to make the French people on this forum angry, but LH has a much better wine selection than AF......(IMHO).

I'm not sure I follow you, this is the same on AF, center seat blocked. If they changed the seats for ones that don't recline and where the armrest can't move, that's pretty stupid, I loved the older seats (that I got in Y since I never flew C), especially since I chose half empty flights and always got 2 or 3 seats for me.

As for the wine you can get it in Y too, I'm guessing in C you get champagne.

Not exactly. AFAIK, all ORY-based A318/A319/A320/A321 have the NEO seats. For CDG-based planes, only the A318 have the NEO seats.

Interestingly skytrax give BA short haul business class only 3.5 stars. As far as I can tell the service levels on board and their lounges are on a par with the completion.

I wonder what has upset skytrax enough not to give them 4 stars as with KLM LH AF etc,

Skytrax is a sham. It's sad that the media and masses turn to it with their big PR campaign and the pompous-titled "World Airline Awards".

When they first started in the early 2000s, SQ didn't even manage to crack their "Top 40" charts.
A friend of mine in SQ said they were being deliberately boycotted since SQ refused to take part in their Advertising and PR campaign
In 2004 SQ started paying them and suddenly they were crowned Best Airline the following year!

A few years back the media quoted them a lot. It seems to be getting less media attention now. Looks like journalists out there are getting better-informed.

What does the Luftwaffe tail fin look like? A red reverse swastika? Ah yes, think I've seen that somewhere!
