For the description it sounds like a small turboprop. Possible An-24?

Just deduction on plane type - the news article linked above states the plane was owned by Associated Aviation. According to Wikipedia, their fleet consists of the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Associated_Aviation

2 BAe 125-700
2 Boeing 727-200F
4 Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia
1 Lear 45 XR

Hope they all survived... fingers crossed.

It would appear to be 5N-BJY of Associated Aviation.

Five dead so far.

Actually only five of twenty survived the crash. Pretty bad.

"Emergency services reported, that the coffin of the deceased taken to Akure for burial was recovered intact."

The brutal irony...

If this crash happened in anywhere but Africa, it would have had 100's of posts speculating on the cause andin the news all over the world. But no, this happened in Africa, so it is almost totally ignored.

Has there been any preliminary reason for this crash on take off including a mx failure, bad takeoff settings, overweight, ?

The BBC report I read last night stated engine failure on take off.

Probably an Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia. Couldn't find any detailed information about aircraft type, but seems like a twin-turboprop which would rule out the BAe 125, the B727 and the Learjet 45 from Associated Aviation's fleet, leaving only the EMB 120. 16 dead
People. They make an airline.

and a Brasilia, if loaded properly, should still be able to climb on ONE ENGINE... especially at takeoff if they computed their speeds properly. I have friends who flew the Bro and said she's on 'steroids. Too fast, lots of power, easy to get out of slick spots if flown properly.

Yes, the 120 should be able to maintain altitude on one engine. Not sure about it being able to climb on one if it was fully loaded. The 120 is a heck of a plane. Sad to see the loss of so many.

If the operators were operating within the performance envelope, then there's no reason as to why the plane couldn't climb out on one engine.

Not speculating with this question - just seeking any information:

Are ingested/struck birdstrikes common at the Lagos airport?

If I remember correctly, a MD-83 crashed on approach last year from a double bird ingestion, killing over 160 - Dana Air I believe.

RIP to those departed souls.
