It should be noted that this programme was one of the best kept secrets in the aviation industry. They started cutting metal on this airplane six months ago and not a peep about it was leaked. Most people were lead to believe this was a Falcon 50EX replacement, not a large cabin buisness jet that would compete with the Global 5000. I myself was expecting it to be a total replacement for the Falcon 900LX, but this has a four inch higher cabin ceiling and nearly a foot wider cross section.

Also, in the Dassault promotion video it features a skylight in the forward galley area. That's just awesome.

Not really. Silvercrest selection was known, bigger size also. It was also known that they start cutting metal a couple of months ago.

GOOD for Dassault.. they needed to compete with the very popular G-450, and also they needed to replace the Falcon 900EX with something fresher.. I like the two engine desing....

The D5X should be able to do New York to anywhere in Europe with ease

Now they need to come up with something to compete against the ultra-long range G-650 and the soon to come Globals 7000/8000

That's the 900's job. And it does that job very well - it has more range than the 450, it has a wider cabin, it has better field performance, and it's more efficient. The only reason to get a 450 would be wanting a bigger overall cabin.

The 900 will stick around - it's in a different size category than the 5X, and people who don't need the range or cabin size of the 5X will find the 900 to be a very attractive option.

Shame that Dassault won't build a Falcon to compete with the G650

Dassault has been very clever, IMO, at finding niches that have no true competition. The 900, for instance, is for people who want the performance of a G450 but don't need the size. The 7X is for people who want the size of a G550 but don't necessarily need all the range of one. In both cases, Dassault is able to make an airplane that delivers efficiency benefits by virtue of not providing more plane than people need for most of their missions.

Going up against the 650 directly wouldn't be in line with that strategy - there would need to be a niche in the ultra-long-range market, and I don't really see one there. The models start getting too close to each other in terms of performance to carve out something unique. Whereas there's a sizeable hole between the Challenger/Falcon 900/G450 and the Global/Falcon 7X/G550, which the 5X fills very nicely.
