Hurricane Jude And UK Air Travel

Just curious how what has been dubbed Hurricane Jude is affecting UK air travel:

Here at the end of 27R it is blowing a gale!

They also have been taking off on 27R all morning which hasn't been the norm all week (starting on 27L)
and have also failed to do a runway change at 1500 as which is the norm.
Any idea why the changes fellow avgeeks?

BA are allowing customers to change free of charge. No cancellations as yet though.

The worst is supposed to hit the Southern areas between 0000-0300 but obviously depending on any damage etc.. this could have a major effect on Monday morning for all transport methods.

Also going to afffect AMS/BRU I imagine. Have noticed KLM have cancelled a couple of services to MAN tomorrow (strangely the 2nd and 3rd servies of the day, bur not the 1st?!)

I wouldn't be too surprised to see a 30% to 40% flight programme cancellation announced later today for LHR/LGW.

I have heard if there is strong winds from the South / South West then Heathrow sometimes keeps landing traffic away from 27R due to turbulance on approach from wind blowing across the hangers.

BA's website states the following:

The airport has instructed all airlines using Heathrow to reduce their schedules in the following manner on Monday:
Between 0600 and 1100 a 20 per cent reduction in the schedule has been applied
Between 1100 and 1600 a 10 per cent reduction in the schedule has been applied
Between 1600 and 2230 a 5 per cent reduction in the schedule has been applied

BA's long-haul ops not affected, with the cancellations from short-haul.

Anticipated that the worst of the weather will be before 6am

Looks like I've picked the wrong dates to attend a business conference in Luxembourg, not that I planned the conference or anything!

I'm booked tomorrow Monday on BAW1431 from BHD to LHR at 07:50, followed by SWR319 LHR to ZRH at 11:50, then SWR758 ZRH to LUX at 17:25. As you can see I left plenty of time between each flight but it appears now that it will not be enough.

I haven't carried out my online check-ins yet, was about to do them now.
Wonder should I wait till later tonight to see what happens, or should I even be calling the whole thing off?

Not sure about BHD but out of DUB-LHR a few flights have been cancelled already and maybe more to follow. It could be chaos at LHR. Also its a Bank Holiday in the Rep of Ireland and flights are quite busy.

A careful reading of the article on BBC News in the link which follows the above will make clear that this storm cannot be called a hurricane. As the BBC says, "Britain cannot experience hurricanes - the word is used for tropical cyclones when they form in the Atlantic and north-east Pacific."

I believe that this particular storm is being referred to as "St. Jude's Day Storm" by most sources, as it will impact the British Isles principally on Monday, which is the day of St. Jude, patron saint of lost causes and desperate situations.

Think I'd better turn up for the first flight (BHD-LHR at 07:50) and hope I will make it to LHR at some point during the day. This aircraft will have overnighted at BHD so my logic is that it must go back to LHR sooner or later. The conference at LUX is not until Tue, so I will have to find some way from LHR to LUX on Monday if I miss SWR at 11:50 which is quite a possibility the way things are going. I could consider Eurostar etc but only if all else fails. That means I'll be trying to find alternative transport at the last minute when everybody else will be trying to do the same thing, not good.

The UK media can be embarrasing to say the least!
It is not going to be a 'Hurricane' but granted it will be very stormy. A hurricane requires average wind speeds (not gusts) to reach 75mph and that will not happen, yes there may be gusts of 80 - 100mph but that is very different form that speed being maintained as an average.

OA260 - BA out of BHD (BA website) is only showing one cancellation so far and that is a dep at 14:25, probably a very light flight. Will keep watching however.

Yes the BA App is usually the most reliable. It has shown me delays before they have shown up on the airports FIDS. I would go like you say and hope for the best. They usually try to get the BHD flights out as its the only way to connect.

EI have cancelled their BHD-LHR at 0745 tomorrow.

Luckily my flight tomorrow from LHR to RTM is cancelled, i was scared as hell hahaha i hate stormy weather. BA phones lines were busy with waiting times up to 45 minutes. But i finally got them and they rebooked it for me for tuesday the 29th so hopefully the wind is less then it is now, always a great service with BA.

Well if we're going to be pedantic, it won't be a 'hurricane' regardless of wind speed, as we're not in the Tropics.

Having lived in parts of the world that do experience 'severe' weather, I too am embarrassed by the UK media coverage. However, it's all relative and something that most of the UK population won't have experienced.

errr... 'Hurricanes' are Atlantic, 'Typhoons' are pacific/asia if my Met exams were any good. And as for the media... and also, most of the media I've been watching are calling it 'Hurricane Force Winds' which is different. Don't get confused between 'Storm St Jude' and 'Hurricane St Jude' it's never been referred to as that.

Still... I am flying a 737 out of Stansted tomorrow morning at 6.45am..... maybe. :-/ will be a fun day.

OK, after reading the article, I have no idead why you classified this as a hurricane
From the article:
Britain cannot experience hurricanes - the word is used for tropical cyclones when they form in the Atlantic and north-east Pacific.

These are low pressure systems which develop over tropical or sub-tropical waters - not the cold waters around Britain - which become "cyclones" once wind speeds reach 74mph (119km/h).

If a hurricane did head for Britain it would be reclassified as an "extra tropical storm" before arriving.

Such storms can be powerful - but even if the winds exceeded 74mph it would not be called a hurricane.

In any case the storm currently expected to hit the UK is no such thing. Far from forming over warm waters, it is expected to form close to the coast before hitting the South West and heading across the country.

This system has a broad low pressure center, not a tight circulation like a Hurricane/Typhoon

have been reading since almost 10 years BUT this my first post, just joined today - so: hello all

back to topic: i flew to GWT/EDXW (Westerland/Sylt [island in the north sea]) today and it really was a bumpy ride. tomorrow, they expect gusts up to 65kt! until now, all flights for tomorrow are still not canceled, but i suppose they will do pretty soon.

A 'hurricane' is the name given to an Atlantic Tropical cyclone. The UK is not in the Tropics. This is an extra-tropical cyclone.

Regarding my earlier posts (in and out of LHR Monday morning), should I still do my online check ins tonight for my flights tomorrow, or is it better not to check in in advance in case the flights don't operate or I end up on different flights? Does it make any difference?

United is holding back for several hours flights bound for BRU, CDG and LHR. They are scheduled to reach their destination around mid-day local time this Monday. Flights to AMS and BHX are so far still expected to run on time.

So far my first flight from BHD to LHR at 07:50 appears to be operating, although it is highly likely to be delayed. G-DBCH is already on the ground at BHD for a night stop to operate back to LHR in the morning. Its got to go back to LHR at some point tomorrow so I'll just hang around at BHD for it. It does appear however that my connection LX319 to ZRH at 11:50 may be cancelled, or at least they are not permitting online check in pending further information. Also checking flight status on Swiss website is not bringing it up. Anyway, my ultimate destination is LUX, hopefully I'll get onto the 15:10 BA flight direct to LUX instead, that gives me plenty of time to get to LHR. It is a pity as this was going to be my first time to try Swiss.

It looks like BAW32N (MIA-LHR), BAW11J (JFK-LHR), and RBA97 (BWN-DXB-LHR) also performed go-arounds.

BAW2 is doing donuts above SEN. Is LCY closed? I imagine that would be an "interesting" approach is these gusts.

There is absolutely nothing happening at LCY at all, but it looks like BAW2 is attempting an approach.

I suppose that the alternative is to divert to LGW?

I was looking at Heathrow arrivals on the BAA website and it shows some flights landed, some delayed and some "contact airline" which I guess means diverted. The strange thing is that they don't seem to have managed to get the airline right, because for example there is Iberia from New York, Finnair from Washington, Air Canada from Bangkok, AA from Doha. You can see the codeshares but not the original flight numbers. I've always hated codeshares anyway - it seems stupid to me for a flight to have 5 different numbers and clog up the departure boards with unecessary and misleading information.

Problems on the ground at LHR I have a friend on the top deck of a B747 who said he was feeling sea sick as all passengers told to return to their seats as they are unable to use the jetty or steps to disembark.

Swedish MetOffice (SMHI) have just issued a class 3 (red, highest) warning for Swedish west coast.

Göteborg I usually very exposed where it sits on the west coast with the large river Göta Älv flowing
through the city. These storms with very strong western winds will "push" the water up the river causing
flooding in the areas of Göteborg that is closest to the river.

Seems like you made it ok flight to land at 0938 not a bad delay.

There is a Eurowings CRJ at 632knots going east and an Avro at altitude at only 230knots going west. As seen on Flightradar.

Edit: Just saw the fastest airliner on FL24 is an ERJ-145 over England at 678Knots. Crazy.
