All-white 747 DFW 25 Oct

Sun Oct 27, 2013 3:17 pm

There was an all-white 742/4 standard upper deck aircraft sitting out in between the cargo area and DL hangars on the west side. Any idea what this bird is? I am assuming it is either a 742 or 744 moving cargo, but no idea for whom. It was too far to tell if 742 or 744, but I could see it was as white as a dry erase board.

Do you mean standard upper deck as in short? CI have an all white 744F (this was the one which blew off its front cargo door during pressure testing in the factory and the superstitious ones at CI have not painted it in usual colors but kept it all white. Rumor was they were trying to unload it soon after delivery as it was a bad omen but never got any takers and have just kept it in the fleet since. May have been operating their regular DFW flight. Was it there late afternoon?

Actually, I may have answered my own question, but let me know if this looks correct.

I am a little mystified why China Airlines Cargo has an aircraft for so long with nothing on it. Every other China Airlines Cargo 744 is in full livery. I guess that is why I was hesitant to think it was a China Air Cargo.

Trex8, that is the one. I just saw the info about the accident / superstition. That explains it perfectly. This was at about 3:30PM

Actually white is the color for mourning in Chinese culture! Maybe they should have painted it all black or some other solid color!

They have had that a/c since 2006. They couldn't have unloaded it in the last 7 years? I could understand in 1-2 years, but 7?? I guess they are not in a hurry at all to get rid of it.

They've parked the oldest 3 744Fs (only dating from 00/01 in the last year or two) so since its from 06 they must have decided its not bad luck. Or more likely its good financial sense!! Funny how money always trumps all else!!

Yep. I figure they would have put something on it, unless it is shut down only when the A-B-C-D checks are due. But even then, I think the reliability of the aircraft would eventually override the superstition or at least show they have nothing to worry about.

Maybe east side? Hangar 4, (former DL) is on the SE corner of DFW, pretty close to 161.

Just paint a bunch of 8s on it. Problem solved.
Well, you know what they say. Whatever doesn't kill you...

I saw the same a/c as it was getting ready to takeoff from ATL that afternoon and wondered about it as well. I've seen a few all-white cargo birds at ATL in the past (at times, Atlas seemed to have several all-white 747s that flew into ATL), but not as much these days.

What's the story/incident behind this bird that make it a bad omen?

Apparently a cargo door blew off during pressurization testing at Boeing when manufactured.

http://www.seattlepi.com/business/ar...s-nose-door-in-Everett-1197536.php

.A Boeing Co. worker who saw the plane after the accident said the nose cargo door, which opens upward to allow for loading, blew out. The nose door shot up so far that it struck the cockpit, shattering the windows as well as causing structural damage to the fuselage, said the worker, who did not want to be identified.

Some of the aluminum skin of the cargo door was peeled back, the worker said.

In addition, the radar dome in the nose was damaged and was hanging off to the side.

I saw this plane taking off as I was driving down 360 on my way home from work. I was going to check flight aware when I got home, but forgot about it by the time I finally got home. Glad to know what it was.

Old B-18722. I got a photo of it way back in July 2006 at ANC. Crazy to think that it's still white. Is it due for a repaint now?

It seemed pretty clean... not like an AF 747...    Couldn't tell you if the paint was thin though.
