St. Louis Cardinals Charter Issues

Tue Oct 29, 2013 9:02 pm

ESPN is reporting that the St. Louis Cardinals charter to Boston is stuck in St. Louis due to issues with the plane. Anyone have more information? Who do the Cardinals use as the charter?

Delta, the flight is operating as flight 8894, with a 767-400. Aircraft is N828MH

Just found this....

Presumeably feeding a replacement flight.

The way this world series has gone, this is only fitting. One bizzare thing after another.

I also see that a B777 flew this route earlier today as well as 8885. The Red Sox really flew a 777 as their charter?

Yes. Lots of media and others on these flights. Few years ago Giants used a DL 744.

The teams have 25 active players on the roster who will get first class/ business class seats.

The team staff will be at least another 25 people.

Since it is the World Series, almost everyone will bring one or two family - some many more.

Then you add the home town media.

The total number of people traveling reaches 200-250 very quickly, and 300-350 would not be an unexpected number.

I have a niece married to a college pitching coach. When the team went to the College World Series - the university had to charter two DL narrow bodies to carry the team, staff, media and families.

I didn't think they had enough slack in the 764 fleet, to run another one up to STL. Maybe they were trying to squeeze one between international flights.

Don't know, delta.com just says delayed.

Says boarding now, with 7:45pm scheduled to depart.

How could you guarantee no mechanical problems in a contract? I bet that they have a good track record with sports charters and controllable delays.

Most likely. Not sure what kind of compensation would be due. I know at my airline, they will screw a regularly scheduled flight to keep the charter flight happy every single time, so the penalty of substandard performance must be significant. Charter flights tend to be very profitable for airlines

Quoting 71Zulu (Reply 8):

I wouldn't be surprised if one of those was just for FOX and another was just ESPN.

Quoting jcarv (Reply 11):

You can't. Just like you can't guarantee no mechanical problems with a regular part 121 flight. But proper compensation for said delays can be negotiated.

In that situation, probably some select alumni and current students would be on those flights as well. Does MLB allow a team to offer up seats on the playoff charters to it's highest dollar season ticket holders that want to travel to the road games?

+1000

This happens every single time. I have had may times where the charter plane breaks and they took my good aircraft to maintain the charter schedule. Airlines make too much money on charter flights to lose large contracts.

Although in this case, DL didn't have a flight in STL that could match the 764 equipment so this was the next best thing. Doesn't look like they truly stole an aircraft from the international fleet, so I would assume they had a spare (probably since it's tuesday)

The manager of the cardinals even did his pre-game presser from the plane.

"Yeah, we've been sitting on the runway for a while," he said. "But everybody seems to be doing all right. We're fortunate that our club allows our families to travel with us. We have some younger kids. But I'm impressed with how everybody has handled it. Fortunately we have plenty of food, snacks for the kids, lots of entertainment with on-board movies, and everybody travels with all their high-tech stuff. Most of these kids are pretty happy that they're not in school right now, and it's a great way to spend a day, and no complaints so far."

In fact Adam Wainwright said he was bonding with one of the other player's kids during the delay...and players absolutely sit in first class. Obviously, if there aren't 25 first class seats then it goes by player seniority...

I was once on a flight from BOS-ATL on DL. Unable to non-rev in first class because the Boston Celtics were on board and needed the extra legroom.

I find it hard to believe that the Celtics were on a regular scheduled passenger flight.. The only time I ave ever heard of this is when a player is heading back home before the rest of the team for a few different reasons. Either he is injured and is heading home for the team doctor to take a look or if the player is heading home to get extra rest before the next game. For example, sometimes you see the starting pitcher of the next game head home before the rest of the team, knowing he will get more rest.

25 years ago they absolutely were. In fact, I remember being on a flight out of Hartford that the Utah Jazz were on going to Atlanta in the late 1980s. These were the days when the Celtics used to play 2 or 3 home games a year at the Hartford Civic Center. I felt bad for Mark Eaton having to try and cram himself into a seat...

Mayor is talking quite some time back. My dad who flew for Continental for close to 30 years said he had many players "back in the day" come up to the cockpit for a tour. Entire team onboard on a regularly scheduled flight.
