LH Planning MUC-MEX

Tue Nov 05, 2013 5:44 pm

Just learned that starting next summer LH is planning to start five weekly flights from Munich to Mexico City with A346 equipment.

Flight plan:

LH520: MUC 22:25 - 04:25+1 MEX
LH521: MEX 10:30 - 05:10+1 MUC

Interesting LH developments at MEX!!! Congrats!!!

Isn't this the second time they try to launch this route?

Yes. First they announced it, then delayed it, and finally cancelled plans. So we can't trust LH anymore...

Well, stuff like that happens on a regular base, so this is quite a bit drastic...

Are they aiming for multiple connections on both ends as they are arriving in the wee hours of the morning?

I've been checking swoodoo for flights to YYZ next year June and found nonstop services on LH metal:

LH 494: MUC 11:55 - 14:50 YYZ A333
LH 495: YYZ 17:45 - 07:45+1 MUC A333

Looks like LH might indeed expand longhaul out of Munich.
Keeping my fingers crossed that MEX and YYZ wont be cancelled before they start like MEX last year

I believe it´s the third time. Exact same schedule as last time. I think they are going to try and get an agreement with either Y4 or 4O. Otherwise the schedule does not make much sense. Except if passenger buy their own fares ex-MEX. They had one with MX, even though they were not in an alliance. But I doubt they´ll cozy up to AM.

Yay! Finally! I can't wait to see the LH A346 at MEX! Let's hope it actually pans out this time.

Which would offer better connection throughout Mexico from MEX? You never know with AM, since they don't offer a flight to FRA or MUC, maybe they want to have an agreement with LH.

One of the very few westbound redeye (overnight) flights from Europe to North Ameica. Only other one I can think of is one of IB's 2 daily MAD-MEX flights.

Those tag-on sectors are rarely profitable, and if they can fill their flights MUC-MEX what's the point of operating to a point beyond? Europe-PTY via MEX is also a rather long way around. MEX is quite a distance west of PTY. MEX-PTY is also 1,302 nm. Other carriers currently operating MEX-PTY show block times of between 3.5 and 4 hours each way.

Also depends on traffic rights. I have no idea what 5th freedom rights exist in that area.

This is the 4th time they want to launch it...

First time announced and two times delayed.

Is it really starting this time?

CUN is in the opposite direction, about 700 nm closer to Europe than MEX. It would take several hours longer via MEX than many other routings, especially AB and DE which both operate nonstop once or twice a week MUC-CUN and DE is almost daily FRA-CUN.

And LH, or any other foreign carrier, couldn't sell seats on the domestic MEX-CUN sector.

To GUA perhaps?
It's rumoured PTY will get its own LH flight sometime next year.
That same MUC-MEX schedule with red-eyes westbound may work well in PTY too, CM has hub banks to match both possible LH early morning arrival and before noon departure, even if MUC is no FRA.
I'm not on CM's payroll.

AM would be ideal. But since MX went Kaput it´s a pain to fly LH to FRA if you don´t live in MEX. Unless they have an agreement with someone but I don´t recall hearing anything about that. With two destinations that would probably push them to get an agreement with AM and AM might see the light. Let´s hope so.

PTY is too far away for 6 hrs.

CUN is leisure/low yield. The opposite market of LH. If anything, CUN would get its own flight from LH but I doubt it since we´ve read up thread how well covered CUN is from Germany.

Wasn't that the rumour before another airline launched an Europe-Panama service (AF or KL; if memory serves)?

Think that LH wants to keep the arrival time at round about 5am in MUC for all other connections which go out there. Honestly, I do not see an extension of the route to a second destination.

Btw: Great flighttime on the outbound. Completely a nightflight to MEX. Great!

Rumour is regardless AF starting thrice weekly CDG-PTY this month and DE already flying FRA-SDQ-PTY once or twice weekly, LH very likely to fly to PTY next year.
