DL 8901 KELP / ELP 752 Segments

Sun Nov 10, 2013 3:35 am

I'm guessing college football charters, as Boston College was playing at New Mexico State and while there is an airport at Las Cruces, there is not currently scheduled service there and DL does serve ELP, which is nearby. The ELP-DEN and SAT-ELP flights were likely repositioning flights.

Indeed it was the Boston College football team,

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/D...1/history/20131110/0200Z/KELP/KBOS

heading home.

8901 is their regular DL flight number this year.

At Clemson last month,

A 752 could LAND at LRU, but it would have a tough time on the ground once there   They would have to back taxi the runways to get off of them. In addition, I'm sure they'd take on more Jet-A than the fuel farm at the airport stores. Take it from a former lineboy there...in addition, I'm not sure of the current state of the field's FAR Part 139 (i.e. ARFF services available) compliance. When YV had scheduled flights, they were keeping up with the requirements. I'd love to see what the runway length requirements are for a takeoff non-stop to BOS with a field elevation of 4456 AMSL. The longest runways are 12/30 and 4/22, which are both 7500'. 30 has the ILS on it...

Looking at Boeing's technical data, standard day +25F (close to yesterday's high temp) 7500 is -maybe- enough. The graph passes 7500' after you're above 210,000 lbs takeoff weight.

ELP has better facilities, and is only about a 40 minute drive from the stadium anyway.

I think I remember one charter a few years ago when they were using ExpressJet, they took I believe 3 ERJs from LRU going to Boise State, they flew to PHX for fuel and then on to BOI.

Here's one of their long flights out of ELP

Not all that strange for ELP. Ground services and transportation are plentiful at ELP -- making charters uncomplicated. Btw, here's a photo of the 753 flown in for the Oklahoma-UTEP game last year.

An El Paso original, a rock wall   Looks like it's by the car rental area at gate A-1. That is American's former DC-10 gate. Suprised they didn't use one of Continental's former gates in the rotunda on B concourse. The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) used to use one of the B gates in the rotunda for their A310s...

Yep -- pretty much. I rented from Thrifty that day.

I just didn't expect to see a UA plane in the AA wing.

KELPkid, I think that gate is actually A-4. Back in the "good ole' days" when American used to fly the DC-10 to El Paso, that was Gate 15. Always good memories of El Paso!

P.S. for me, the "original" "good ole' days" of El Paso included ground level concourses with American 707s, Continental Viscounts, Frontier Convair 580s, and Trans Texas (later Texas International) Convair 600s. Those were the only carriers serving ELP at that time.

That's true.

I believe they renumbered the A concourse the same time they recarpeted and reconfigured the TSA mezzanine.

I ditto that. I remember growing up there being a lot of 737s: Frontier to Denver, Western to Salt Lake and United to Denver. I also remember all the CO 727s that would leave out of the round gate area at the end of the concourse (loved those gold tails). Amazingly, service on WN to DAL and HOU has barely changed and DL still has MD-80 service to ATL twice a day. Does anyone know what Eastern flew into ELP in the 80's and from where? I would imagine it was 727s from MCI or ATL but can't remember.

The gate in the second photo (B-11) used to service UA's ELP-LAX flights which were dropped last year.

Eastern didn't serve ELP very long, but I think all the flights were ATL-ELP and were operated by 727-200 aircraft. For a brief period however, at least one of the flights was flown with a 757, which were fairly new in Eastern's fleet at that time. I remember seeing an EA 757 at ELP on an early morning sometime in 1985.

Hello, This is my first post on Airliners, although I have been reading for years...Being from El Paso, I had to remark how much fun reading this thread was. My memories from childhood are the AAL DC-10 that used to depart in the morning as well as the COA mini-hub. I remember flying on the COA DC-10 that flew ELP-SAT-IAH. I used to love that flight. My first memory is flying on the AAL DC-10 to DFW in August of 74, the month DFW opened. It was then that I knew I wanted to work in aviation. Fun times....

Wasn't that the little airline that used props and enplaned from the ground level between concourses?

Anyone remember when WN used to plane and deplane using air stairs, well into the 1980's?   Their gates didn't get jetways until I was in high scchool...

And the rotunda used to have 6 gates. One of the jetways was removed, and is now down by the GA hangars at the south end of the field...

Yes, I remeber the stairs...It was during the "Spreading love all over Texas" days. Anyone get to ride the SWA 727? I also remember the EAL 757. It had 757 in bold type on the tail. I spent a lot of time at the airport as my girlfriend worked in La Placita

AFAIK, the lizards, burnished copper decoration, ceramic tiles, and vertigris-colored wrought iron came with the 2008 renovation of the East Concourse.

Anyone else know?

The rennovation started CA. 2001...before that ELP was like a glorified Greyhound bus terminal on the inside. The 2008 rennovation was the one that redid the area where concourse A and B met up and moved the TSA screening area to the centralized area. Before the last rennovation they had redone the B Concourse and exterior in the new style. There used to be a 1970's loungy area between the A and B concourses downstairs where you could watch the planes, and I believe they used to actually enplane and deplane some charter flights down there (via airstairs). I remember seeing soldiers from the Fort down there plenty of times with their rucksacks...
