They built a Van's RV-12 which is a kit plane. They built something that anyone can order from the manufacturer in kit form and put it together in their garage. The way the article sounds, Emirates designed and built this plane, which is only slightly the case.

I think the title of this topic should be edited slightly.

Hardly a challenge to build this kit with 40+ people and tools and warehousing at your disposal. There's people building these things on their own in their barn or garage, that's impressive!

Thousands of hours... to assemble kit?

The Mfr states 700-900 hours is typical. I can see someone (or a team) pushing into the 1000+ range; but, thousands of hours means over 2000. Hmmm....

This is cool! What a great way to learn about aircraft. Too many schools have zero hands on component other than the minimum required. Engineering trainees need a senior project IMHO. Even better if they pick up a pilots license. I wish more schools would build kit aircraft. Its a great lesson.

Everyone I know who has done a kit plane has taken twice the hours the manufacturer stated. That's typical. On the second plane, you'll get toward the kit hours. This was also a too large of a team which means some slackers had hours counted that didn't go into building the plane.
