Didn't US operate this for a few years in the mid 2000s and then drop it ~4 years ago?

Please DELTA return to Scotland!! I have always wanted a GLA flight but I'll settle for a return to EDI.

I'm sure it will do quite well. I took the PHL-GLA flight last summer and it was completely full in both classes.

One presumes a far better deal than the old BAA was ever going to offer, hence why BAA is not missed very much at EDI. It's a great new route and should do very well indeed.

I'm not surprised. Hope it lasts. Doesn't UA operate a second daily seasonally out of EWR?

Not sure about that, but UA has announced seasonal ORD-EDI service for S14.

Any chance that US won some RBS business with this? RBS owns Citizens, and I know that RBS travelers don't have many nonstop options.

The second seasonal daily United EDI-EWR is being replaced by EDI-ORD.
So UA B757 x 2, US B757 and AC Rouge B763 all daily. Changed days

It does. 5x 752 weekly in winter grows to 2x 752 daily in summer.

That's not correct. Second daily EWR-EDI will continue to operate alongside the new ORD service.

Excellent news. Plenty 752s at EDI next summer. I keep saying it but a ME flight must be top priority now.

US Airways currently operates to Glasgow, but have never operated to Edinburgh. Delta flew to Edinburgh, first from Atlanta for a year, then from New York for a year, but this was pulled.

Yup, double daily in the summer and 5 weekly winter. This is a very popular flight, I can see this going to a 763 on at least one of the two daily if traffic continues to increase. Great news for EDI.

They've been talking about this for a while. Apparently one of the ME3 was meant to announce in 2011 but then we got TK which didn't sound like what they were hoping for.

I think it's got to be EY. They are growing their European presence and with EK double daily 773ER (and rumour of the A380) up the road in GLA it seems like the logical operator?

Is this confirmed? United.com is still showing the two daily EDI-EWR (flights UA37/UA109 and UA36/UA108) on sale as well as EDI-ORD (UA119 and UA118) for next summer.

Agreed, they're on a journey to "right size" the new combined fleet, just remind me, some of the B763s are moving to two class?

Yup, BusinessFirst and Cattle. Well 2.5 class if you include E+.

The UA flights are daily during winter, and double daily in summer. It is very unlikely that the flight will switch to a 767, as most of these are used on longer range flights. Extra capacity has been added for this summer by launching flights from Chicago, offering an alternative routing for connecting passengers. Any extra passenger growth will come from 757 aircraft on alternative connecting hubs, perhaps Washington, or a second Chicago flight.

Etihad are less likely now that they have announced they are buying a stake in Darwin, which is now being renamed to Etihad Regional, and will operate as a feeder airline for some of Etihads flights, mainly out of Zurich.

Etihad Regional isn't planning to fly to EDI and that wouldn't make sense, especially if you're connecting at AUH.

In fact Etihad regional are only flying from LCY and CBG in the UK so it's kind of a mute point.

I can see an EY A321 or A330 coming to EDI.

It's far from a mute point. Sure Darwin currently only serves those destinations, but that doesn't mean that will always be the case.

They are buying Darwin with the intention of turning it into a feeder airline for their existing flights from Zurich. Right now they do not serve Edinburgh, but in future they may choose to launch service to EDI with Darwin/Etihad Regional rather than a non-stop to AUH on Etihad metal.

It will be interesting to see if this service can establish itself as a year round route in the future. I was reading earlier that Air Canada Rouge had load factors of 98.5% on their Toronto service which is excellent. No wonder they have expanded it for S14.

As for the ME services, I assumed QR is the most likely of the three to arrive at EDI once more of their 787s arrived.

Isnt their A320 narrowbodies only used on regional flights? If EY starts EDI it will most likely be with the A330.

As others have commented, didn't see this coming.
Running a local business, it would be nice to see some all year round flights rather than lots of capacity in the Summer and just EDI-EWR daily the rest of the year (from our perspective business travel tends not to occur in the Summer - or is at least greatly reduced). Surely if it can support EWR(2), ORD, PHL and YYZ in the Summer, EDI can support more than 20% of that the rest of the year?

I think Edinburgh is one of the greatest cities in the world. The more flight options the better..

It is a bit of a hike from EDI to the city center, but it's better than driving from Glasgow.

I'd suggest taking the bus rather than trying to walk it

In all seriousness, the journey from the airport to center really isn't that bad - 20 minutes at most. It's hard to get any faster than that. The tram line should be opening next year, which will present an alternative to the bus, but journey times will be about the same.
