Very unfortunate.

I came right here as soon as I saw the headline on Yahoo! main page.

Here's more information from the AvHerald entry (AvHerald entry Sad

"Ground observers are reporting the aircraft had gone around two times and burst into flames upon touch down on third approach."

The airline has had some security issues recently, the Russian authorities have restricted them from entering the EU.

Again, this is a prop not a Boeing. Which is weird, as the airline doesn't operate any prop aircraft.

That is excellent reporting as always, as is the following where they use a huge image of a Lion Air. I know Lion Air has issues, but it's not fair, IMO, to associate their airline in a story of a crash that has nothing to to with them:

Here is another completely wrong image, unless Southwest has somehow added Kazan to their schedule

media is grabbing anything from anywhere and using it.

What AWFUL reporting. The press should be waiting until official or reputable images come out from the accident. Aargh.

The Tatarstan News Agency tweeted a link: http://eng.tatar-inform.ru/news/2013...rce=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

The tragedy could be the fault of the crew, a source in the Tatarstan Emergencies Services told Interfax. "The pilots most likely made a mistake while beginning to make the second circle but it could be the faulty automatics; the version of a technical failure is considered as well."

A dear friend of mine is in KZN visiting family this week and said the weather is bad with snow. I wonder if this likely had a factor in the accident? Sad news indeed. I am shocked that the PNL has already been released! I really was not familiar with this carrier but have certainly learned a bit more since today. Rest in Peace to all involved.

There is no snow in Kazan at present, nor has there been at all except for a few hours sometime in September. It is quite windy today, the METARS for KZN show this also.

This is the first fatal accident for Tatarstan airlines. I have flown with them on many occasions and always without a problem.

Watching RT news, plenty of reporting on it. They are confirming 50 dead and showed a video of a fairly large fire. Also reporting all bodies have been recovered and that the Captain was recently upgraded to the captain seat.

They had some Russian "aviation expert" saying the 737 decided to Go Around on landing. They also are confirming the son of Tatarstan President was killed in the crash.

A major tragedy indeed. May all those who lost loved ones come to terms with their loss and those who died rest in peace.

At the same time I am appalled by the reporting by some of the online newspapers - that's simply sloppy to throw in pictures of unrelated planes / events with reports of this crash. It's very unfair to other companies which have had nothing to do with this incident to have their logos etc. placed in the public eye in such a way - it's all wrong. It is also quite insensitive to the airline actually involved.

Condolences to all at Tatarstan AirCompany.

From RT News: http://rt.com/news/passenger-plane-crash-kazan-866/

"The passenger aircraft Boeing 737-500 operated by the regional Tatarstan airline exploded after crash-landing in the airport of Kazan at 15:25 GMT. The jet’s nose reportedly hit the ground during touchdown. Flight U363 was coming from Moscow Domodedovo airport.

“Only ashes and pieces of foam were left from the plane [after the explosion],” a doctor from the emergency rescue team told ITAR-TASS.

Maybe a nose first landing that went terribly wrong.

Interesting comment on avherald, even if impossible to verify at this stage:

Quote:
Just called to Kazan tower controller: said that aicraft has diviation 4 KM left of track on STAR. Radar called pilots about that twice. Then tower observe and called to pilots same diviation on final. Pilots said that would like to continue approach. Last their repor: "Unstabilized. Going Around."

As to the inaccuracies of the news reports on this deadly crash, don't forget this happened in Russia and they have a very limited news media, under significant influences of the government especially if anything negative to government officials or agencies as well as Russian corporations. You also have there, and elsewhere, of news media trying to be the first with the story rather than right as well as having few staff with real knowledge as to flying, aircraft, causes of crashes.
It is too early to give, with the limited or lack of obvious potential information known now of the factors in this crash, that will come out after a through investigation.
Since this involved a Boeing a/c and possible mechanical issues, could Boeing be part of this investigation even though within Russia ?

I assume the NTSB will be invited to participate representing the country of manufacture, and so indirectly Boeing would be involved.

It is a bit strange that the son of the president and the head of the local FSB (ex KGB) were among the passengers. So at least 2 VIP's were on board (out of the 44) and I doubt they were travelling alone.
