Sun Nov 17, 2013 6:58 pm

Strong winds and thunderstorms in Chicago, I'm sure there will be plenty of diversions for ORD and MDW

Looks bad. I was watching the Bears game, and they had to clear the stadium. I wonder if MSP is getting any diverts?

I was watching some of the flights holding east and west of the airport on flightaware, there have already been BA and AA diversions for some flights that were coming from Europe--they're all headed to DTW now.

They might get stuck there for a while - forecast is for severe weather (thunderstorms and tornadoes) throughout the Indiana-Ohio-Michigan area the afternoon and evening of 17 Nov.

Judging by the radar images I'm seeing it appears MDW is getting hit harder than ORD. Tornado touched down near PIA and moving northeast.

On a related note, FlightAware shows the afternoon Delta flight from MSP-GRR is in the air. I don't know what path you can take between those two airports that would avoid the massive bow of storms sweeping through the area right now! It's going to be a very bumpy ride over the lake:

Probably didn't have enough fuel to do much circling while waiting for storms to clear ATW.

The flight made it into ATW no problem. They just couldn't take enough fuel given the runway runway conditions to make it back to IWA. Happens to the ATW-LAS flight once in a while too.

My father just got off of B6 flight 1373 from JFK to CHS. The plane came in from ORD and JUUUST made it out with only a 15 minute delay. He was chatting with the flight crew and they said that all flights to NYC are now being delayed because of tornado warnings up here. The return B6 flight to JFK is already delayed from 5:05 to 7:30.

Being on Long Island right now I can say that it's going to get very nasty here too in a couple of hours.

Glad I'm not out flying today, just sitting in my family room watching it roll in here in MI.

Lufthansa is gonna go for it, just left DTW for ORD and heading North around it all.

I was listening to ATC, and heard an AE flight (MSP-LGA) turned around over WI and went back to MSP. It was hard to hear on center freq, but it was something about the weather, and company telling him to go back. I imagine a CR7 would not be able to fly that distance and circle around very long. On a side note, the Air China 744F that diverted here to MSP, is actually parked at gate G4, amongst the Delta. It looks funny having a full freight bird at a passenger gate. That floral tail sure stands out.

Well my parents finally made it into ORD from DEN but their next flight to MKG was cancelled. They said ORD is a mess right now with lines everywhere of people trying to find ways out. They are renting a car and driving back home to Michigan instead of spending the night.

Really? from 8,000ft? Seems odd, but that is a longish flight.

Two diversions into SBN a Trans States and Mesa CRJ700 parked at A1 and A2. Allegiants flight to IWA parked at A3 tonight because of the LAS flight was at A9. My flight to ORD, ASQ 6123 was cancelled but the good Air Wisconsin folks got me on an earlier Mesa flight that was delayed 3 hrs as it ended up with empty seats. The weather at SBN was so bad it took out the windsock.

I talked to the Captain of Allegiant 401 from SBN to LAS. They had to also fuel stop in ICT because of wet runways at SBN and strong headwinds enroute. The runway at SBN is 8412 feet long but it was wet and they have to take into consideration accelerate stop distances on a contaminated runway in the event of an aborted takeoff.

If it meets the criteria of the type of contamination, you can take a big hit on weight off a wet runway. For example on my a/c on an 8000' runway with 1/8" standing water you take a 19,000 pound hit on the runway limit.

Numerous cancellations for AA/Eagle and many inbound flights have been delayed 3-5 hours due to a lengthy ground stop earlier and then a ground delay program. Very glad I was off work today.
ORD of course initially got hit by severe storms with operations suspended from roughly 1200-1300 and additionally there have been very gusty winds with gusts to 40-50 knots all afternoon/evening.

DTW got hit by the same weather during the late afternoon/early evening and it also appears to be a mess with delays/cancellations.

This was an interesting routing. UA1462 BOS-ORD got all the way to Lake Michigan, circled a bit, and turned around and went to CLE. Their approved flight plan back for the continuing flight to ORD had some interesting zigs and zags too.

Delta 812 from Atlanta ended up in Indianapolis, and 5939 (Mercury? one of the Delta Connection carriers) from LGA had to pay a visit to Grand Rapids, Michigan. My favorite was US Airways 758 which left the gate just as the really nasty weather showed up, taxiied out for about an hour, and then came back to the gate (not enough fuel left?).
