Someone put together an excellent video about DL's retirement of the L-1011 that includes some of the special events related to the retirement and final flight to Victorville. I'd love to see Delta come out with a video like this or at least similar ceremonies honoring the DC-9.

I have read through this thread 2 times now, and either I'm missing it, or It isn't posted, but what exactly is the official date and the official flight of the FINAL revenue DC9-50 takeoff and landing? Is it Delta 2014? and if so, how do I find it to book a seat? Or is it now sold out?

I don't believe Delta has made any official announcements, but from checking schedules the last scheduled Delta DC-9-50 flight is DL2014 on January 6, 2014, from MSP to ATL. The flight is currently available for booking on delta.com; $309.90 in coach and $418.90 in first class.

I'm catching it half way, doing DTW-MSP-ATL. (#1965 and 2014). You may have to do it by schedule not by best price.

Well I figured out how to make it somewhat affordable. Had to book a one-way on #2014 to get a decent fare. Every multi-city option was ridiculous. Looks like WN will have take me out of ATL the next day. I'll make a trip out of this to see family in CLT.

First class wasn't much more than coach plus economy comfort and a checked bag, so I went all out. I'll be in 1D. Gonna hurt the wallet, but this should be a flight to remember! Didn't want to regret not trying!

I'll probably catch 1965 out to MSP, and be in the gate area for the departure of 2014, but got to get back to DTW on the last departure of the night.

This could be quite the a.net & FT get-together.

I'm very glad DL is doing all this. My dad flew the DC-9 at NW for nearly 15 years and I grew up riding on it, so it has a special place in my aviation heart. It'll be strange when they're all gone.

I'm booked on 2014 as well. Will fly SAN-DEN-MSP on F9, will spend the night in ATL then back to SAN Tuesday afternoon.

Saw your reply about this on Sky-1... Talk to you on the mailing list and Facebook every so often, but I don't think I've actually seen you since Airliners International MCO? I assume you'll be at AI-LAX next summer?

The only worthwhile ATL hotel for aviation photographers appears to be the hotel of choice for Monday night. I know a few other photographers that will be staying there as well, so maybe we can all grab breakfast on Tuesday morning?

I wasn't going to bring the big lens as I didn't feel like carrying it around in the camera backpack all day, but I might as well if I'm going to stay there.

As you already know, I used DL miles early on Sunday morning to snag a ride on a CRJ7 BNA-DTW and then DL1965 DTW-MSP (seat 23A). Thought about sitting up front on 1965, but just had to sit in the back and enjoy the lovely noise one last time. Decent window-view photos will still be possible for a little while on this leg, where it will be dark on DL2014.

Could have cooked through even more miles, but decided that it made more sense to fork over the $348 for seat 4D on DL2014 (MSP-ATL) - which is pretty cheap and was well worth it for this occasion. The other David we know from HSV is in 4C next to me.

Used WN points for the ride home on Tuesday. Leaving ATL mid-day on a SouthTran 717 to RDU and then a 737 RDU-BNA.

Like countless other folks, I've wondered for years when the last Delta (Northwest) DC-9 flights would be, and always knew that I'd find a way to ride on a least one of them. Within this community, the running joke has always been that the Delta pilots that parked the last 757 in the desert would ride back to Atlanta on a DC-9. Even if we knew that wasn't actually going to happen, now it really has come down to the wire for these wonderful old tanks.

One of several 10k DL bonus miles runs I took in 2010 was BNA-DTW-MKE-DTW-BNA a few weeks before they retired the last six DC-9-41 frames that were still wearing the silver NWA livery. While the miles were nice and have come in quite handy, it was even nicer to ride on three of the remaining six DC-9-41s that day and receive upgrades on three of the four legs (exit row on DTW-MKE leg).

I came away from that day-trip with around 5,000 MQMs and something like 22,500 RDMs, but the flights on those old (and somewhat rare) birds meant more to me. I think I had around $300 wrapped-up in the entire day, which I wasn't complaining about for the miles, the free drinks, and one last chance to ride on what still looked like NWA metal.

This time, it will be nice to use WiFi one last time on an aircraft that has been hauling people around long before I was born, and before there was even a thought about the Internet, WiFi, or touch-screen smartphones. Funny to think that the most advanced piece of electronic equipment in these birds is the system that runs the WiFi.

I am going to fly up from Houston to Detroit to catch 1965 to MSP and 2014 to Atlanta. I am very excited to fly on the DC-9 for the first time, but I am sad that these two flights will be my last. All I have to do now is count down the days and find a hotel to stay at.

Looking forward to meeting you guys!

Yeah Matt, I think the last time was at AI-MCO. I missed you when I was in BNA for a conference a couple years back. Haven't thought too much about AI-LAX, but since it's local, it's certainly possible. Last AI I went to was PDX.

Breakfast Tuesday morning sounds fun, but will have to be at the hotel unless someone's renting a car, or there's another option within walking distance. I figured I'd probably end up having hotel breakfast anyway.

The way I've heard it involved Northwest pilots heading home after parking the last A320.

Delta Last DC-9 Flight Jan 6, 2014 MSP-ATL

Tue Nov 26, 2013 11:09 pm

Anyone know if there is definitely something planned at MSP during the long-ish layover before the final MSP-ATL flight?

I have to be back into MKE the night of 1/6 which kills my chance to get onto the very final flight. But I have these two options:

(a) I can get on leg #2 of the day (MKE-DTW) . That gets me onto the final victory lap routing and one last trip on a 9, but not around anything going on at MSP.

--or--

(b) I can fly up to MSP that afternoon to be there when 1965 arrives and 2014 leaves. That gets me in MSP for anything going on related to the final flight, but not onto that (or any other) last-day DC9 flight.

Anyone know if anything is planned? I'd like a final 9 flight, but it would be a big disappointment if there was zero acknowledgement at the airport or onboard and everything was saved for MSP and the final MSP-ATL leg.

Then again, if the longer MSP layover is nothing but a scheduling quirk and there's pretty much nothing to see at the airport, it's a waste for me to fly up there and back for nothing.

Sort of an odd question...I ask myself what IS the threshold of enough festivities to be "worth it"? A banner? Cake? Announcements? Free drinks onboard? An intentional go-around on approach or a wing-wave on departure? (Not the least bit sure if that is kosher...please don't slam me for even asking.) I guess it's not exactly a rational thing to be doing in the first place, so perhaps I shouldn't even ask.

Anyway, if anyone has any idea of what may or may not be on the docket, let me know and it can help me decide.

Wish I could join you all on that historic flight, but from AUS-MSP-ATL-AUS, it runs almost $950. Take plenty of pics and share some great stories

I have PLENTY of FF miles, but alas, on a different carrier. And if I did this, knowing that I have miles to burn, my wife would probably divorce me. She just doesn't get it.

I checked into doing ROC-DTW-ORD and back and it was over $700. Sorry,not for a stretched '9. For a 727,DC-10 or 747 classic,yes. But not a 9.

I don't think anyone on here knows (including myself) unless they're involved in what's being planned (if there's even anything). Would be nice but I think the time at MSP is a by-product of all the flight times. The a/c is following a route where the timing wasn't changed. 2014 was 721 and always departed at that time.

To get there that early it's leaving ATL at 7:20am that morning and stopping in ORD instead of MKE...ATL-ORD-DTW-MSP-ATL. Glad I didn't book MKE-DTW yet to get on.

There are still ATL-MKE, MKE-DTW, DTW-MSP and MSP-ATL flights operating at the times the D95 was scheduled to run, but now they are other aircraft like M90 and 738. Hopefully anyone who has already booked can have their tickets changed to the D95 flights without trouble.

Well, I got the short end of the stick with 2014. Got on the phone explaining my situation to multiple reservation agents/supervisors. None would re-accommodate me. All I managed to get was a refund. I'm looking for a different way to get on (I won't get my seat back) but either way, shame on DL for the absolutely horrible handling of these final flights. I did lose out on my primo engine view seat, though. I am now in 19A.

I just called and had no problem getting back on 2014 as well (although being a Diamond probably helped). It took about 5 minutes. I think I got the SIN call center (based on the agent's name and accent). She initially asked if I had a problem with the 737 and wasn't aware it was the last DC9 flight. I explained the whole thing and she was genuinely curious about it all. She mentioned that she loved the DC9, but I'm guessing she's never actually been on one.

One can only assume they mean 2013.

Delta Last DC-9 Flight Jan 6, 2014 MSP-ATL

Thu Dec 05, 2013 4:24 am

I am extremely saddened that I will not get to go on this. I am fortunate to have memories of the last DC-9-51 I was on, and that was N784NC when she was still with NW. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7zxgiZBJJQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZkVvjAQKL0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy6du8_iLME

I suppose the only real thing I will miss is the certificate they give out, and the meeting with other fellow DC-9/AVGeeks.

I guess in a positive light, I can look at it this way. I was on the inaugural flight from JFK-MSY on B6, and have a First Flight certificate. Not as special, but in a way, at least I have had one milestone in my life in aviation. Plus, I was on the inaugural revenue flight of one of FL's Boeing 717s in 2002. A lot of firsts, but no lasts. I will miss the DC-9, and even though I may not be there in person, I will be there in spirit. I will never forget the sounds those JT8Ds made. The JT8D-200 just isn't the same. A real AVGeek can tell the difference with their eyes closed between a JT8D-Basic and a JT8D-200 series engine.

I never thought I would be so emotional about something, but missing this opportunity due to the fact that I do not have the money makes me want to cry.
Alright Alright Alright!

Well I got back on. It will cost me a bit more, and I've downgraded from first to economy comfort. Really bummed to lose my seat up front, but it still will be awesome though.

Er, I think I'm missing your humor. Jan 6th is in 2014.

Well, hey, it's still F6. There's still a chance for an upgrade!

Delta Last DC-9 Flight Jan 6, 2014 MSP-ATL

After reading all the posts so far, we will see the the following flights on Jan 6 for the D95:

DL 2012 ATL/ORD 0725 0828
DL 1813 ORD/DTW 0908 1129
DL 1965 DTW/MSP 1215 1315
DL 2014 MSP/ATL 1620 1946

Am I correct? Are there any other D95 flights flying in the system that day or this is it!?

I am still trying to work out my schedule and I would really really really want to be on the last flight.

I remember when DL retired the DC9-30, they kept one or two D9S flying for awhile as a substitute for D94/D95.

I wonder if DL will do the same this time after the D95 retires...

There's some others in the usual short-haul ATL routes (about a 10-12 of them I think). Doesn't appear to be as likely that the DC-95 will stick around for substitutions. Sounds like 1/7 is the day to fly them to the desert.

Not many seats left on 2014, so I hope you can make it and join us!

I'll just have to suffice myself with reading your trip reports, I suppose. Back when it was cheap(er), I couldn't commit to it. Then it got a bit out of my reach in the 400s and 500s. Now I definitely don't have the $863 they want... (to say nothing of the other two flights I'd have to take)
Good night, and keep watching the skis. Uh, skies.

On Jan 4th 2014 , Delta flight 1856 from ATL to MLB and returns to ATL using the Diesel 9
From ATL to MLB it costs $143.00
From MLB to ATL it is $299.00
Both one-way - no connection

Hopefully, Delta won't change aircraft at the last minute.

I will try to get a last day pix or video.....hopefully.....
