I'm in row 7. Will be organizing a meetup prior to the flight in a bar in close proximity to the departure gate. Since I won't know the gate until 1/6, I'll update this post accordingly that morning.

I'll also bring a big sign that you won't miss.

I'm in 1A on 2014 and 2D on 1965.

Based in PHL, I created a long weekend trip to Atlanta built around catching these flights. I'm flying AirTran PHL to ATL 1/3/14 and ATL to PHL 1/7/14 on 717s. And I'm flying ATL-DTW the morning of 1/6/14 to be able to catch DL1965... That flight is on DL's 763 with flat bed seats. Looking forward to trying my first ever flat bed seat!

I'm very much looking forward to the DC9's final flights, my first ever 'final flight' of a type, my first ever flat bed seat, my first ever AirTran business class flights, and the opportunity to fly the oldest DC9 and newest (717) on a carrier which is soon to cease to exist (AirTran).

Unfortunately, I booked my flight when I thought Flight 1667 on the 5th would be the last DC-9 flight. So, the early bird doesn't always get the worm. If any other a-netters made the same mistake, I'm in seat 12A, so stop by and say hello. Here is my itinerary:

1/5 US 829 RIC - CLT A319
1/5 US 1946 CLT - ORD A321
1/5 DL 1667 ORD - ATL DC-9
1/5 DL 2535 ATL - MCO B737-900ER
Overnight at Orlando Airport Hyatt Regency Hotel
1/6 WN 526 MCO - ATL B-737
1/6 FL 538 ATL - RIC B-717

Even if Delta would let me change my flight, I'm sure it would cost me to do such on the other airlines I'm booked on. So I'll consider DL 1667 as MY last DC-9 flight.

Seat 24B (right next to me) has opened up on the final flight (#2014) on the 6th!!! If anyone wants to switch seats, you should go into "My Trips" on the Delta website to swap! It's a perfect seat right in front of the JT8D engine!!!!!!

On the timetable on Delta.com, and only the timetable, it lists the D95 on ATL-PNS on 14th.

Their timetable also shows a D95 from ATL to ORD on Feb. 14.

I also see a MEM-ATL one on Feb 15th. And SAV-ATL on 2/14. However these are only in the PDF schedule, not the PC one. PDF schedule was update on 12/26 and the PC one was updated on 12/30.

Unless I am missing something, I do not see the D95 returning to ATL from ORD nor PNS. Could these been some sort of positioning flights for a charter or to the final resting places?

The speculation is coming from Delta's 2014 Timetable
You can view it here: http://www.delta.com/content/dam/delta-www/pdfs/flight_schedules.pdf

I think this may be a mistake as they already announced that they will retire the DC-9 on January 6

That is a good thought but it seems like a very odd mistake if it is indeed a mistake. I would just hope that it is so all the people that have booked it can be on the flight. They might have meant to put in the 717 instead.

The PDF timetable is a mistake.
The electronic timetable is always more up-to-date.

The flight in question in the PDF timetable on ATL-PNS on 2/14 says D95 but the electronic timetable says M88.

I believe any DC9-50 listing in the PDF timetable after 6 Jan is a typo error. The e-timetable, OAG and Delta.com booking shows MD88 on the flights mentioned for February. The PDF timetable has several issues with it. All of this could one more.

After hearing what everybody is saying and looking at Delta.com booking I can say, of the flights that I saw listed as D95 in the timetable, none are actually operating as D95s

Edit: Changed wording to make less confusing.

Between the significant flight numbers and going as far as auctioning off seats off, it seems highly likely that those other flights are a timetable oversight (not that we wouldn't love to see those planes grace the sky a little while longer). It will be fun to see those final flights documented so thoroughly by the A.net community though!

There definitely won't be a water cannon salute on the MSP side for 2014. It will be a cold day for spotters taking pictures on Monday, with a high of -14 . Looks like I'll be taking pictures from inside the car with a blanket and hot coffee

Congrats to all that get to make the last flight on a first generation DC-9 (10-50 series). But don't despair, the DC-9 still lives on with the DC-9-80(MD-80), MD-90 and B-717-200. The old adage about the last Airbus pilot being picked up in the desert by a DC-9 may still be true but by a MD-80/90 or 717.

I'm seeing flights between ATL and VPS that show as 717 equipment, but have DC9-50 seatmaps starting Jan 12th. Examples include flights 2447 and 2485. Flight 310 on 1/21 seems to be the last ATL-VPS flight with a DC9 seatmap.

If the the DC-9-51s have time left on them, Delta may keep them as spares to back up the newer less reliable aircraft.
