2014 dropped in price to $476, which isn't bad for anyone wanting to jump on last minute 2 days out.

It may be as low as -16 degrees fahrenheit when this aircraft leaves MSP for ATL for its "last' flight.

Looks like things may be a bit interested tomorrow at ORD and DTW with the approaching weather making an already bad situation even worse.

I'm sure that quite a few folks that planned to take their final DC-9 flight today are rather unhappy right about now. FlightAware (however accurate they may or may not be) is showing a late ATL-SAV flight from last night as cancelled, which also cancelled the SAV-ATL flight early this morning (of course). They're also showing 14 other DC-9 legs that were supposed to operate today and tomorrow morning as cancelled (so far). That has grown from 6-7 around an hour ago.

http://flightaware.com/live/fleet/DA...fset=0;sort=ASC;order=aircrafttype

The re-schedule of DL1965 and DL2014 that Delta did around Thanksgiving threw a bunch of people for a loop, but it seems that most of us called them and had that taken care of without paying change fees. Glad to see that they were willing to work with folks on that.

I'm not particularly thrilled with my new BNA-DTW flight tomorrow morning, but at least my aircraft (N370NB according to FlightAware) should make it to BNA tonight as it's coming from LAX. Certainly not happy about my departure time being two hours earlier than I originally planned or the swap to an Airbus (not a fan) from a CRJ7, but I'm hopeful that I'll have a better chance of making it to DTW by being on the first flight out. I guess that all depends on whether or not they have time overnight to clean that place up a bit. I lost 23A on DL1965 during the re-schedule shuffle (now in a window seat a few rows up from there), but I'm still in 4D on 2014.

As of yesterday, the rumor mill has N770NC as the aircraft for 1965/2014. So far, today has been completely screwed-up for that aircraft like it has for so many others. Initially, that frame had a full day of flights setup this morning and was supposed to visit DTW, ORD, ATL, VPS, PNS and one other airport (can't recall which), but she has just now completed the first flight that was supposed to take place around nine hours ago. DL954 (DTW-ORD) was axed early this morning, but she finally made it to ORD a few minutes ago as DL912. The only thing I'm seeing on FlightAware for that aircraft as of now is DL863 (ORD-ATL), which is certainly going to be delayed.

A few questions... The windows at DTW suck for photography, so will anyone else be hanging out up in the center-terminal Sky Club prior to DL1965? Also, other than folks from SAN and HSV that I'm already aware of, is anyone else staying at the Renaissance on Monday night?

Ren is full tomorrow night - I'm staying down the road at the Marriott.

Tomorrow ill post the meet up place in MSP if anyone wants to stop by and visit prior to the flight. I'll be there around 2p.

Here is my itinerary:

1/5 US 829 RIC - CLT A319
1/5 US 1946 CLT - ORD A321
1/5 DL 1667 ORD - ATL DC-9
1/5 DL 2535 ATL - MCO B737-900ER
Overnight at Orlando Airport Hyatt Regency Hotel
1/6 WN 526 MCO - ATL B-737
1/6 FL 538 ATL - RIC B-717

Speaking of folks who have had a bad day trying to log their final DC-9 flight... What became of your day once you got to ORD, L1011? Looks like US1946 landed at ORD around 20-minutes late, but DL1667 (DC-9) is still sitting at ATL and isn't even scheduled to arrive at ORD until around 8:15pm (originally scheduled for 6pm). Assuming that actually works, you'll still miss your B739 to MCO by the time you ride the DC-9 ORD-ATL.

Let us know what happens...

I was supposed to be on DL 1399 this morning and coming back on DL 912 this afternoon to catch one last r/t. About 5am I woke to find that the outbound has cxld and I was rebooked on the 7am departure. I live in the loop and still had get up & get ready. No way was that going to happen. With this wx, I don't want to take any chances getting stuck in DTW and having to work tomorrow, so I'm going to take a refund & cherish the 115 DC-9 flights I've been privileged to enjoy. I am a little bummed about the fact that it was going to also be my first revenue First Class ticket as opposed to getting lucky as a non-rev. Good luck to everyone else trying to catch one last DC-9 ride.

I flew through ATL yesterday morning (1/4/14) and saw my last DC-9s.

I got this picture (I apologize for the blurriness) of a DC-9, 717, and MD-88 lined up next to each other at the terminal. It's not the best photo, but it's still kind of cool to see two days before the -9's retirement. I thought I'd share it here

Unfortunately, I am not a Sky Club Member nor 21.

I am coming in from Houston, and I get to DTW at 11AM. I plan to walk around the A concourse a bit since I have never been in Delta's terminal at DTW.

Looking forward to tomorrow!

A few things worth doing if you've never been there...

Ride the overhead tram from one end to the other so you can see the entire layout. The terminal is within a few feet of being exactly one-mile long:

Hope for a heavy parked outside the windows behind the water feature (fountain) located mid-terminal. Always makes for nice artsy photos:

Head down the long escalators (also mid-terminal) and check out the light and music tunnel that connects the mainline terminal to the regional terminal under the ramp. Usually rather interesting to see for the first time. (search Google Images for "Detroit airport tunnel")

My guess is that many of you will find your trips a mess tomorrow and may want to take advantage of the winter weather waiver in effect for a refund. My guess is that these flights will not go as planned tomorrow. DTW will be IRROPS-central tomorrow.

Out of 11 flights operating tomorrow MSP-ATL, there's a grand total of 1 seat for sale. 2014 is currently oversold by 2. All due to the weather over the past few days. I went ahead and refunded my ticket. I was confirmed coming down but was to non-rev up to MSP tomorrow but it won't happen we're too full tomorrow system-wide.

After being originally scheduled on AA through ORD to MSP, AA canceled almost every flight through Chicago tomorrow. I was able to get rebooked, positive space, on DL #340 leaving ATL at 6:42am. Hopefully the flight won't be canceled/delayed. The weather is looking pretty nasty folks. Had I paid money for these seats I think I would take the waiver, especially knowing that the Diesel 9s will be around for another week or two. Best of luck on getting to/from the airport tomorrow. Hello All,

Long time follower, first time poster. I love this site.

I am on DL2184 a DC-9-50 tomorrow from SDF-ATL at 16:35PM.

I know this is not the last DC9 flight for DL, but I am glad to at least be flying the last day of its tenure at Delta.

Hopefully, we don't get scrubbed because of the cold and icy weather coming our way tonight.

Thank you all for the great information about flying, piloting, and aviation in general.

Assuming nothing changes between now and then, it looks like you'll be on N787NC. She's on the way to BNA right from from ATL and will be here until around noon tomorrow. As of now (as far as FlightAware knows), all that ship has scheduled for tomorrow is BNA-ATL-SDF-ATL.

The sky finally opened-up with snow in the Nashville area a few minutes ago, which means my trip to the airport at 5am with a temp around 8F and 12-15mph winds will be that much more entertaining. If I can get in there early enough, I should be able to snag some window shots of your bird sitting at the gate (depending on the gate).

Enjoy your ride!

Hi all,

As my first post on A.net I thought I would contribute to this important moment in aviation history. The DC-9 is by far my favorite and over the past few years have flown it 11 times, mostly on daytrips, and I hate to see this old bird go.

Right now, Flightaware is showing N780NC as operating ATL-ORD-DTW-MSP-ATL with a 30min delay on flight 2014. However, due to the insanity the weather is causing, who knows what will happen with the schedules. I was originally supposed to fly up to MSP on AA to see 2014 leave, but my ORD-MSP-ORD flights were cancelled. Now I plan on seeing that same plane when it passes through ORD, but I'm not even sure I'll make it to ORD.

At this point, who knows how everything will work out. Fingers crossed for those who try to make it and long live the Diesel Nine!

Right now I'm just crossing my fingers that everything works out. I booked through to MSP-MCO just so I could afford the fare to get on 2014, and I have flights on US right away the next day, so I need to get to MCO regardless.

I'm hoping the circle routing gets some priority tomorrow and at least operates somewhat normally.

Well my trip on Saturday STL-ATL-LIT didn't go as planned (with the -9 on the STL-ATL leg). Flight was showing a delay and I got a message on the Delta app that I could rebook, which was good since the DC-9 had been swapped for an MD-90.

I was able to rebook on to DL915 and DL1861 for today. Thankfully we made out before the brunt of the storm in STL this morning as the flights in the afternoon were cancelled (although we had to wait nearly 2 hours to be deiced). Was able to get the final trip on the -9 on N773NC on DL1861 from ATL-LIT.

Live from Atlanta! DL2012 pushed from the gate at ATL for ORD about 30 minutes late. N773NC (ship 9864) will be doing the honors today. I will catch up with her at frigid MSP later this afternoon and flying back to ATL on DL2014, where I will meet most of you, I am sure.

Do we have a final list of " who's who" on 2014? I realise that some had to cancel, unfortunately.

I am in 1C and looking forward to meeting fellow members.

It appears that 1965 will be somewhat late into MSP, but should not impact 2014 (I hope!)

Which DC-9 is now planned for the DL museum? Will it now be 773NC?

I don't think they will keep any of these DC-9-51s at the Delta Museum. They simply do NOT have the interior space inside for anything larger that a DC-9-10. I found this out when I suggested they put N994Z in the museum as it flew for Northeast, Delta, Republic and Northwest Airlines. It also flew for Ozark Airlines for a number of years after being sold by Delta. The only thing they could do with one of the DC-9-51s is use it outside as a gate keeper.

Hi all. I was walking through MSP this AM and I stumbled over to the D Gates. DL Corporate staff is setting up Gate D6 for 2014. Balloons, cake, and other items. I'm in 6A as of right now.

I have some questions that maybe some other people more knowledgeable in civil aviation can answer.

1) When was the first DC-9 delivered to Northwest? And which one was it?
2) Which is the first DC-9 ever delivered to Delta?
2) When was the last DC-9 retired from Delta (pre-merger with Northwest)?

1) NWA never ordered DC-9s, they were inherited with the Republic merger. (Republic inherited them through the merger of Southern (received their first DC-9-10 in 1967) and North Central (received their first DC9-31 in 1967)
2) The first DC-9 was delivered to Delta in late 1965 and first flight was on 08 December 1965.
3) Delta retired the DC-9-32 in 1992.

NWA did also fly DC-9s that never flew for Republic. From http://www.planespotters.net NWA got a group of DC9-41s from SAS beginning in February 1991, a group of DC9-51s last flown with Continental beginning March 1992, a group of DC9-31s from Midway beginning July 1994 and a group of DC9-31s from Alitalia beginning March 1995. There were also a few single airplane pickups.

I believe NW acquired some DC-9 s when Eastern shut down as well. However, NW never took delivery of a brand new DC-9.

Awesome takeoff out of DTW. Spooled up the engines and we sat there a good 7-8 seconds before brakes were
released. See you on the ground in MSP in about 55 min.

I read here that there was one going into the museum. I thought I also read about plans to expand the museum?
