FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operates less than daily it will become affected by the unqual number of days in each month. For example, if a flight runs on Tuesdays only and a month has 5 Tuesdays it will show 5/31=.16=0.2 (if 31 days), but 4/31=.129=.1 if the month has 4 Tuesdays.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

More cuts at DL ROA? These might be seasonal, though.

Most of these DL March changes are basically rolling forward the seasonal adjustments that are in effect for Jan & Feb 2014.

These routes do not operate during the seasonal low period in January & February. They appear to have extended forward the reduction into March.

*DL MEM-DCA FEB 0>0.7 MAR 0>0.8 APR 0>0.9 MAY 0>0.8 JUN 0>0.9 JUL 0>0.9

Either or some combination of the following:
1) cut by mistake
2) some influential politicians extert pressure to maintain this route
3) posturing for DL's request for additional DCA slots. DL's platform for more DCA slots is based on being able to serve small and medium sized markets, versus what the LCCs are likely to serve. Cutting MEM service and asking for more slots kind of flies in the face of that statement.

Again, seasonal reduction. This report shows what has changed week over week, and the DL changes are almost all for March. Most of the March adjustments reflect what will be flown in Jan & Feb.

Same for ROA, DL reduces the number of flights in January. So they now adjusted the March schedule. Not a further cut per say, just extending the seasonal reductions.

ATL-ROA drops the daily A319 down to a CR9 for Jan & Feb, but the A319 RON flight returns in March.

However, last week DL cut ROA-LGA, effective in mid-Feb.

It's #3 you hit the nail on the head. They were going to add something else with those slots that was unannounced and now they are going to promote that as only possible if they get more slots. I'm sure that's it.

Never got pulled from Delta.com and I don't believe was zeroed out.

Delta knew It would be asking for National slots before the settlement was even reached, has nothing to do with that.

It would not surprise me if there is a similar reason for WN not hobbling together some DCA-MDW flights by reducing DCA-MKE and DCA-ATL. Much cleaner case if you extole the benefits of new DCA-MDW service additional slots will bring. If instead of you fly 3 or 4 DCA-MDW flights but cutting elsewhere, it's a more difficult case to say you need more slots to serve existing markets with the frequency you'd like.

Runway construction is happening at EWR in April-May. Given that UA has the lion's share of ops at EWR, they're the one that's going to be most affected. Dropping routes that are probably 95%+ connect out of EWR, especially on smaller planes, will help free up slots for other routes.

Could the UA EWR cuts be the start/middle change of gauge. It seems like they have to remove a large number of 50 seaters from the fleet. That is going to result in some cuts somewhere.
or is it too soon?

Are the UA Express reductions in EWR (AVP/MDT etc) related to the resurfacing of 4L/22R runway that starts in April 2014?

I should check pax counts for the Star City of the South. Maybe Roanoke has gotten smaller than I recall. I realize this is seasonal, but, 1 LGA flight (appears to be a permeant cut), ATL is down from 6x at one time, though mainline has been added. And DTW is less than daily.

ROA down 4 to 5 flights a day could be 10% or more of the seats in ROA. is 10% a normal reduction for out-of -season airport traffic?

The bizzare thing about this is that US is already flying DCA-MEM. I would think that DL could posture by adding something else from DCA, say MKE, where DL has a sizeable presence. Adding a route that already has a carrier serving it, makes no sense to me, even if it is a former DL hub.

MHT is kind of interesting actually. I believe US uses two gates in MHT. AA does not serve MHT at the moment, but this station will not be dropped post merger. I am eager to see if US is trying to free up some room here for a possible 2 or 3X ORD add from MHT.

In this case, AVP basically becomes another TOL. AVP is only about a 90 minute drive from EWR, if that, so this could be an attempt to move connecting pax through more realistic hubs, rather than through EWR where they are likely getting very little O and D traffic. BDL is a bit of a further drive, but a lot of people who live in the BDL catchment area going overseas would rather just drive to a NY airport or take the train rather than fly from BDL, because much of the catchment area south of Hartford can easily use JFK or EWR, and the far eastern parts could also drive to BOS as well.
Like with AVP, BDL connections to points west and south can be handled at IAD or ORD easily.

Is this route in danger of going away? It seems to me that routes reduced to such a frequency eventually vanish from existance...

MDT is hurting. DL is axing CVG service and UA is axing EWR from the looks of things. DL has been shrinking CVG for a while though. Are they going to shrink anymore or have they hit a certain point where CVG is turning a profit? I keep hearing/seeing mixed things regarding that....

How on EARTH do you figure that? There's a few downgrades (a net loss of 5 flights) for ONE MONTH in the early spring and you say the hub is being "gutted?" Did you see DTW's cuts for March? They're losing 22 flights. Is DTW closing too?

DTW-ROA does not operate on Saturdays.
It is 1x 6 days a week through March, then goes up to 2x 6 days a week in April

10% capacity reduction it not out of the norm for markets in Jan, Feb particularly when a lot of leisure / VFR traffic is lower.

Quoting PHX787 (Reply 33):
Is this March only again?

This route seems to be going every which direction.

Extending out the seasonal reduction through March. JFK-CVG is 1 per day Dec-March, then back up to 2x per day in April

Quoting PHX787 (Reply 33):

There is next to zero O&D on this route. It's actually kinda easier to drive that way this day in age because of the hassles of flying lol

To those who signal a cut like this as a bellwether to CVG's demise, I just don't think that is a good excuse. However:

MDT is hurting. DL is axing CVG service and UA is axing EWR from the looks of things. DL has been shrinking CVG for a while though. Are they going to shrink anymore or have they hit a certain point where CVG is turning a profit? I keep hearing/seeing mixed things regarding that....

MDT is not necessarily hurting.
DL is seasonally removing capacity in markets in the 1st quarter, Jan & Feb, and now March. CVG-MDT was cut in favor of maintaining capacity over DTW and ATL. The CVG-MDT is spill capacity. For now CVG-MDT returns in April.

UA EWR-MDT is being temporarily suspended in the spring due to runway construction at EWR.

Seasonal only. Probably a smart move to prevent Virgin America who might be interested. Virgin America has alot of planes coming in. With the competition on LAX and United offering more than daily in the summer i think its one market they can gurantee Virgin America wont enter. I think its a smart defensive move and RDU-SFO probably makes good money.

Looks like CLE is being gutted.

Between last week and this week, all the UA hubs have been reduced for the spring schedule. During the Investor's Day webcast, the system and scheduling guys said it's very difficult to schedule the airline and they are working hard to reduce the number of lines. While that certainly doesn't sound great for the smallest hub, so far the cuts have been more or less evenly spread around.

CLE-PIT might indeed become a casualty. CLE-DTW and CLE-CVG (frequently full but probably profitless) are no longer operated by UA.

The bizzare thing about this is that US is already flying DCA-MEM. I would think that DL could posture by adding something else from DCA, say MKE, where DL has a sizeable presence. Adding a route that already has a carrier serving it, makes no sense to me, even if it is a former DL hub.

I think my theory is correct. They were dropping MEM-DCA to add something else which they were about to announce. When the DOJ deal came out they added it back so they can say they need the divested slots to add whatever the other thing is. Care to guess what it is? IDK. MKE?

I would say it is. I think as the small RJs quickly leave the UA fleet and with the financial pressure on them, CLE will once again be under pressure to stay a hub. I think their best hope is for OO to run prorate flying from there.

Quoting steeler83 (Reply 22):

EWR is temporary

Absent the use of Ch11 I've never seen an airline shrink (more than 10-15%) to profits. Doesn't mean it can't be done. My guess is that CVG is either marginally unprofitable or barely profitable. Either way, I doubt it meets DL's double digit margin targets.

Quoting kgaiflyer (Reply 25):

Who would have ever expected such a thing?

Well, nothing there really shows that. I think IF CLE is going to get hurt its going to come in Fall 2014 when the small RJs start leaving in substantial numbers.

Oooohhh. It's difficult. That's useful info. Putting airplanes on advance schedule is actually one of the easier things that an airline does compared to maintenance and irregular ops.

You beat me to it….any airline big or small is difficult to schedule……but maintenance is far worse to schedule.

March is such a busy time to FLL with spring break demand and cruises. I guess delta isnt even that interested in o&d unless theres some business component buying last minute fares.

I enjoy the OAG threads, but sometimes everyone gets all spun-up on the slightest changes. Nothing is constant in this industry.

CVG-FLL was changed from 2x MD88 to 1x 757 in March

Nov-mid Dec: 1 - 1x MD88
Dec Holiday Period: 2 - 1x MD88, 1x A320
Jan-Feb 1 - 1x MD88
Mar 1 - 1x 757
Apr 2 - 2x MD88

I believe CVG-FLL is the only DL 757 flight into CVG during this time.

Plus CVG-PHX returns at 6x per week 738 from 2/14 - 5/1

Well, we've said before that the G4 schedules in here are of limited value. I think it does seem that G4 must not be doing great in Hawaii due to the lack of momentum for expansion, but I don't know definitively if they are doing poorly or not. Do you?

True, but there's often plenty to talk about.   There were no SEA moves this week.

The downside to the removal of CRJ2s from Delta's fleet is the loss of frequency.

There was an article posted in the DL BOS thread about how DL is expanding BOS. There is a link at the bottom of that to another article saying that the DL-AS battle, with DL adding service in many key AS routes in LAX, has also angered UA who feels that now DL is encroaching on their turf. DL has beefed up RDU in recent weeks, so there is the longshot possibility that this route is actually a preemptive move against DL, but I don't see this as a route DL would launch.

Nonetheless, in future versions of this thread, keep a close eye on what UA does in strong DL markets. I believe ATL, MSP, and DTW are routes that have been announced, or will be announced soon by UA from SFO and/or LAX.

Its a non-issue.
So HSV, is going all-717 in March, wheras now they have 4 - CR2 flights plus 4 D95 and MD88 flights.
It is essentially capacity-neutral, and capacity naturally varies seasonally and day-of-the-week.

HSV-ATL flights first and last flights do not changes, with the first flight at 5:30am and the last departure of the day 5:30pm. They retimed a few of the midday flights so the difference in frequency is neglible in the grand scheme of things.

This is interesting...Didn't HU just start 7x weekly to ORD? I guess it may not have been doing well if they are cutting back during the summer high season.

They started it with 2x weekly and will increase to 5x in Dec, further add to daily in summer 14.

They should have no trouble filling the economy cabin, but for the first/business, I have heard that the load was terrible, at least for the first two months from Sept.

Just quoting the UA spokesman. Another eye-roller on the webcast was UA saying they were glad the US codeshare was ending because they need the flight numbers back for their own use.

You are correct that In terms of capacity, it is certainly a non-event.

However, we are a small market and must connect to our destination and some destinations are a double connect. So a reduction in frequencies can make connections longer or more difficult. Remember that Delta does not allow a domestic connection of more than four hours. It was just a few years ago we had 11-12 flights per day to ATL and 3 per day to DTW.

But, this is what Delta needs to do and it will be good to see the 717 return to HSV. (And this time the airport won't be paying out millions in subsidies, either.)
