UA's Network Optimization: No Word On Guam?
I read the press release from UA about the changes they are making to their network and fleet utilization, and I noticed there was nothing said about Guam and destinations/routes connected to this base. So is Guam "status quo"? Or will UA make any changes to its Guam operations too?

Guam is quite profitable for United (it was for CO/Air Micronesia in the past) with little competition and relatively high fares. I wouldn't expect any reductions there.

The GUM hub has a near monopoly in the region and while the population is sparse and poor, air travel is the only practical way to get on or off the islands. It is also operated mostly with 737s so it does not have much impact on widebody fleet planning.

Status Quo it appears. Not a whole lot coming from the S. Pacific region and no news is go news

Actually I think there are some changes being made, but not reductions. I read recently that the 753s are receiving ETOPS (the ex-TZ birds were ETOPS already) and a few will be sent to GUM. The 737s currently there will be rotated back into the mainland fleet after receiving cabin upgrades (DTV, E+, new seats, etc). I don't know if some or all of the 737s will leave GUM -- I'm not sure if all of the destinations they serve can handle a 753, so some 737/8s may remain.
That may have just been a rumor, so maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject may have better insight.

Air Mike had 757's and 727's before the 737NG came along, it would make sense to run 1 757-300 instead of 2 737-800's GUM to KIX/ NGO/ MNL, the small islands require a 737 but that could rotate LAX-HNL-MAJ-GUM..
DL does quite well with the 757-200 GUM to Japan..

It seems to me that it would be smarter to reconfigure the 753s to have fewer F seats. The 738s have 14F, but the 753 in its current config is 24F. That's a pretty big increase. It would probably be smarter to remove two rows of F and replace them with 3-4 rows of Y. I'm assuming they'll remove E+ as well? The rest of the Guam fleet lacks E+, which kind of sucks. It would be a nice upgrade for the Guam fleet though...the 753s are nice, new-looking aircraft, whereas the Guam 737s I've flown on felt kind of neglected and worn out.

Are we ever going to see a nonstop flight from one of UA's US hubs to GUM? Right now you need to fly through HNL to get there. I realize it's a long ways away, but could SFO -- GUM be a profitable route?

GUM doesn't have HIGH yielding/time sensitive business travelers, it's mostly a military (with the build up) and regional destination.
It's not like the Asian mainland (increasingly like Europe) where the back is filled with people on VFR and holiday and the front has C/F demand all year round. It's a bunch of islands and islanders need to travel.
AND it's not like the Carribean/Central America where the flying time is low. Non-stop from the US requires wide-body aircraft.

757-300 could operate from GUM to all airports in Japan as well as MNL, HKG, CNS, the small Islands could use the 737-700 or -800. 757-300 would also be good for NRT-ICN and HKG-SGN during peak loads..
