Norwegian 787 In Ft Lauderdale

Sat Nov 30, 2013 1:00 pm

Finally... after months of anticipation, the Norwegian 787 (EI-LNC) landed at Ft Lauderdale FL from Copenhagen. I was waiting outside to see her fly directly overhead a minute from touching down. Beautiful sight. First time actually seeing the 787 fly directly overhead. I have seen all the United Dreamliners, and flown on it 4x. Also have been to Orlando Sanford to see Thomson bird from the garage roof. But as a resident of Ft Lauderdale, it is great to be able to see her every night!

Departed on time both from CPH, FLL and now from OSL. Things seems to be going better

Great to see FLL get TATL service! Hopefully DY's problems with their DreamLiners is behind them and they can finally make good progress in their longhaul aspirations!

Who could have imagined that FLL's first scheduled TATL service is to CPH. Very interesting. P2P I would say. Wish them luck.

Out of interest why are these aircraft flying on the Irish register?

I thought I read an article somewhere that said that it had to have a "foreign" registry so that maintenance (read heavy) could be preformed overseas (Asia). If if had been a local registry the trade unions would have opposed this.

Can someone confirm this?

I have heard that. I have also heard that they are registering the company in Ireland to get away with more favorable taxes and payroll fees.

This isn't FLL's first trans-Atlantic service, nor it's only. Condor has been flying FLLFRA for quite a while. Finnair, Martinair, Icelandair, South African Airways and Laker Airways have all served FLL in the past.

While CPH seems like an odd choice, it and ARN were the two largest Miami-Europe markets without non-stops, two of the eight largest U.S.-Europe markets without non-stops and FLL's third and fourth largest O&D market trans-Atlantic after FRA and TLV. Though with average one way fares barely scraping $400, it's no wonder these near 100 PDEW markets haven't had non-stop service.

Norwegian will be a welcome addition to FLL and will likely keep adding destinations coming up. Too bad people flying it will be landing in one of the worst interntional terminal facilities imaginable. The entire place is a dump and an embarrassment to South Florida. It's worse than MIA's Concourse F, which is also a miserable place.

To cut costs, using Thai crews is one way:

"The airline uses the Irish registry as a means of circumventing restrictive Norwegian laws that bar airlines from hiring cheaper Asian cabin crews."

There is no doubt the facilities in FLL and MIA (except for the newer terminals) are miserable. However, FLL is probably the easiest place to fly from (domestic) and both FLL and MIA are amazing for spotting.

Well, the newer terminals at MIA represent 85%+ of international traffic, so at least few people are experiencing it. And the latter I strongly disagree with - from check in lines to security lines to facilities to concessions, everything is worse at FLL. Things are so bad there and facilities so overstrained, airlines won't take checked bags until 2 hours before, which creates a mess because you have a bunch of people sitting around waiting to check in bags.

I have never been in their INTL terminal but anything has to be better than MIA. I know the facility is new but I find that airport to be so cumbersome. FLL is so small that while it is run down its very convenient as long as you are not going to Miami Beach.

I forgot that Condor was flying there. And fine, let me rephrase my statement:

Great to see FLL gain TATL service! Now people will have more options than just going out of MIA or through ATL or JFK.

Agreed. I just made it around to the viewing park in time to see the arrival. I originally went to view it from the Hibiscus parking garage but all parking garages at the airport were full. Everybody was being directed to economy parking off-site. Too bad for those traveling and with limited time before departure! Another sign of FLL outgrowing its current infrastructure.

Where did the 787 park? T4? Or did it have to go on a hardstand? I know the Condor flights had to deplane from a hardstand because of the construction...

I regards to FLL's Int'l Terminal, everything is a bit of a mess because they are renovating it and adding gates. I believe the customs area will be expanded as more Int'l flights are added. A lot of airlines, such as B6, which recently added service to PAP, POS, PUJ and MBJ are banking on a bigger and better Int'l terminal.

I saw it fly over last night and if wasn't for the fact that the 787's lights are so distinct from the 737s/A320 that typically visit FLL and knowing DY were starting their service I would have had absolutely no clue who it was (the red is hard to see at night).

Was my first time seeing the 787 in person though. Very quiet and its landing lights are super bright.

Its parking at gate E9 Terminal 3 where they perform a hardstand at the gate and bus the passengers to customs. With the construction, widebodies can't fit in the corridor to the customs gates. AirTransat from Quebec is doing the same thing.

My mistake, then. It was year-round. Condor did cancel winter service last year. The flight must be a horrible performer to have gone from year-round to operating for two months out of the year. That's pathetic.

Yea. Loads have never been an issue on the route, as they've always been in the mid-90's. Clearly those high loads were not resulting in $$$$$.

Hello,

I think FLL is a pretty good airport, easy to use and convenient for me personally. It's interesting that FLL has more airlines
serving it than does DFW but of course DFW is ruled by A.A. and is now a vacation destination.

Have Norwegian started with American cabin crew yet or are they currently using Thai cabin crews on the non Asian longhauls too ?

Nothing to do with maintenance, and SAS have had heavy maintenance on their LN-registered planes overseas for years.

It has mostly to do with the possibilities to use foreign labour in cockpit and cabin

Interesting that someone would so categorically say their destination isn't a vacation destination as long as the large majority of the passenger growth is within this leisure segment. I would say these Norwegian FLL flights have a leisure share very close to 100%.

Anybody know how all the new Norwegian flights are doing? FLL has had a poor track record with long haul intercontinental services thus far, but the airline's decision to add LGW must be a good sign. It seems like most of the other Norwegian bases are small Scandinavian or Spanish markets that probably cannot support 787 transatlantic services, with the exceptions of HEL, MAD, and BCN (their newest base). If CPH/ARN/OSL/LGW-FLL are doing well, I wouldn't be surprised to see them serve FLL from any of those bases - or from any other bases they happen to open in major markets - in the future...

Not sure what their bases are exactly, but ALC can probably fill two weekly planes to South Florida. Gothenberg definitely can (larger market than Oslo to South Florida), so could probably Seville, Tenerife, Malaga, and Valencia. I don't expect any of those, just don't think Norwegian would have a problem achieving high load factors.

Yes. UA 142 (IAH-LOS). Per FlightAware Left IAH on the evening of 11/14. Seems to have been at MIA for about 1.5 hours before continuing on to LOS. Had I caught this diversion on Flightradar24, I might have gone to see it (I think this might have been the first visit of a Dreamliner at MIA?). I can't remember if it was earlier this year or last year, that the same flight diverted to MIA with a 777. I saw it on Flightradar24 circling out to the east (I guess burning/dumping fuel) before landing at MIA.

I have the same question. Maybe a very sick passenger? I don't think it would have been a (Dreamliner) mechanical issue since the plane was on the ground for a relatively short time.
