WestJet Christmas Miracle

Mon Dec 09, 2013 8:41 pm

I'm an AC frequently flyer and not a big fan of WestJet but what they did for people on flights from YHM & YYZ to YYC is pretty cool.

Nice.

Spanair did something similar in their two last Christmas in 2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW5Xo4QrSBw and 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-pDjKAjV1g .

Westjet for the win. The internet is eating this one up - hook, line, and sinker.

I love to see companies doing this. Makes you remember that you are not just another ticket sold to them (at least some of the time).

Too right! An ingenius marketing scheme maybe, but one that made a lot of people happy. In a baggage reclaim. Which, by the way, is no mean feat!

Great job Westjetters! and a Happy Holidays...

Just a few comments though...
They should give credit to Spanair
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW5Xo4QrSBw

Cant wait for Air Canada's Holiday Video this year to see what they come up with...

Anyways, 200 000 views and WestJet vice-president Richard Bartrem said he would give away more to the local WestJet communities. So help out!

Of course it's a marketing scheme and WS stands to gain something from it (else why do it?) but so what - some people got to go away happy. We don't tend to associate happy with flying nowadays...

AC did something very similar about a month ago. Passengers on a flight arriving at YVR were greeted each with a brand new suitcase from AC and Bentley. Interesting to see the different comments and reactions between the two...

It's the Canadian way. AC can do no right, and WS can do no wrong.

Don't get me wrong what WS is great, and they deserve the plaudits coming their way. From what I hear they're a great airline, and they seem to be getting stronger and stronger every year. Good for them.

Of course it's a public relations stunt. That's the obvious observation here. Regardless, it's still brilliant, and they deserve the positive PR. There's nothing wrong with giving them the attention they deserve after orchestrating this marketing scheme. It's business, but it also made people happy. Just accept it and move on.

I had the good fortune to work as a small business supplier ( 2 man Passenger Safety Card company, based in YQL. Now disbanded.) The two of us worked with Westjet from 1999 to 2005. They had a very keen sense of supporting local business. Although my company is no longer around, the way we were treated was admirable. Fast forward another 8 years, and it is great to see some of the original spirit that makes the company what it is, still manages to shine through.

Brilliant Marketing? Absolutely! The positive feedback that they will receive from those luck ~250 to 300 pax will be rewarded ten-fold, let alone the publicity gained through Social Media.

So whenever an airline tries to treat their passengers well those passengers become pawns in their marketing scheme? Technically you're right, I guess, but that seems like an extremely cynical way to look at things.

I think he's trying to say that we should be more appreciative when the airlines don't treat us well. After all, they're being honest at that point.

I'm sure what AC did was nice, but honestly this seems like a whole different level: Setting up Santa, having people ask for things, and going shopping for those people and having the items arrive at their destination by the time the plane got there? That's quite impressive. Good on WestJet! I've also admired their "April Fools" commercials as well (those are on youtube too).

Very clever. However at the risk of sounding cynical it really is only an ad, albeit long and well done. In fact, it's probably relatively cheaply done since the retailers must have kicked in co-funding.

I'm quite sure the WestJet team that came up with this knew very well that this would give them a warm fuzzy, holiday related spin on their generous act of random kindness.

After watching the video of the baggage claim, those WestJet employees appeared very happy to be part of this, which leads me to believe the generosity was genuine.

Absolutely, you can't ever go wrong, doing something nice for someone else. Especially a stranger, very cool stuff, I hope more things like this happen to others, it's cool just to see genuinely happy people, enjoying a total surprise.

It was very imaginative, and the fact they were able get each individual persons request is nothing short of a miracle, that was not a real long amount of time to go out & buy everything, wrap, tag, then deliver down to the baggage carousel. Very cool, it was fun just watching the reaction of the faces on those passengers.

Haha, walked straight past the carousel! I'm guessing passengers were told to wait for a surprise (coupled with cameras, etc.), just to make them stay. There is no way they genuinly thought they were getting something that big.

Also, that guy that asked for socks and underwear is probably kicking himself right now! Haha!

Interesting to see WestJet saying "Merry Christmas" instead of the politically correct Happy Holidays. Happy to see a company that doesn't care about being politically correct! Nice!

In my narrow d/t Toronto jaded corporate world where everyone flies AC or PD and most people sniff at WS, this story is the talk of the town today (or at least the M5 postal code). Until the next crack scandal anyway.

Kudos to WS for an original marketing coup!

I bet it is nice to have something more positive to speak about, I'd try WS, but that was decided well before this event. I liked the look of their 73G at HNL once, then heard they were becoming a good option up North, I'll get around to it next holiday season.

RE: WestJet Christmas Miracle

Thu Dec 12, 2013 6:47 am

It may be marketing, but it leaves a warm and fuzzy feeling nevertheless, makes some lucky people very happy (certainly nothing wrong about that) and it gets WestJet lifetime customers and fans who probably couldn't wait to tell the world what WestJet got them. No amount of "traditional" marketing could have achieved the same result.

Genius.
(with credits to Spanair too of course)
