FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operates less than daily it will become affected by the unqual number of days in each month. For example, if a flight runs on Tuesdays only and a month has 5 Tuesdays it will show 5/31=.16=0.2 (if 31 days), but 4/31=.129=.1 if the month has 4 Tuesdays.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

9V MIA-BLA JAN 0.8>1.1

This seems to cover most of the slot givebacks. The PBI/MIA thing is confusing, however.

DL has been going in and out of point-2-point CUN routes. They added a bunch a couple of years ago non-daily and then before they started cut way back to just a few operations. I almost wonder if it was an intentional plan to drive bookings and then reaccom over ATL to fill up the ATL-CUN planes.

A rather quiet week on this front. Not much that is eye catching. I suspect the AA frequency adjustments for the most part are to get some airplanes through paint in what is usually a not strong quarter for the carriers. AA all but leaving two Caribbean destinations from JFK is a pretty good indication that AA is planning on shifting that traffic to other (think PHL and maybe CLT) hubs.

I know this was a subsidized route, are the subsidies starting to run out? If so you wonder how much longer this will run, or if they may switch to AF metal, though most of the AF planes are too much capacity for this route.

Subsidies are over, DL is running it unsubsidized but only seasonally now. It was supposed to start on 4/28/2014 and have 6x weekly service in the summer.

I don't think it was ever supposed to be daily, so no idea why it was showing as 1.0. 0.7 is 5x weekly, so DL appears to be going back to the 2013 service level.

It seems that AA is cutting Eagle frequencies at ORD, while most of the increases are on current mainline routes. Are we seeing reductions as the Embrear 140/145 fleet is reduced in favor of the CRJ 700 and the Embrear 170?

I thought this silly to begin with..... here PPE (Puerto Penasco) is wanting to become a new(est) Mexican beach destination, and AM gives it nonstop service to LAS - another mostly resort destination? People drive to Puerto Penasco from Arizona and California, so I thought that maybe LAX or some other SoCal airport, or even PHX, SLC or DEN would do much better for it. But LAS? Not too many people from Puerto Penasco want to gamble I guess?

I remember seeing the UP 737 at RIC last August. I think the resorts on Grand Bahama Island subsidize this service and then advertise heavily in these markets.

Despite doubts by certain members on this site, MCO-BOG has been successful right out of the gate (no pun intended). Avianca started the route shortly after B6, but clearly there is enough room for both carriers in the market.

B6 also added FLL-BOG, which appears to be experiencing similar success. I'd be really interested in seeing O&D vs. connection traffic on both routes. I'm sure there is significant feed from JFK/LGA/EWR, and DCA/BOS (to a lesser extent).

Separately, FLL-MDE does not seem to be experiencing as much success. FLL-LIM, however, is absolute gangbusters.

Slightly on-topic - MCO-SJO, which people had similar doubts about, currently runs 9x/weekly with an A320. The route originally launched 7x/weekly with an E190. (B6 also flies FLL-SJO 7x/weekly with an A320.)

BOS-FLL-LIM fares and redemption availability on B6 are very reasonable ($550-600 or 34000 B6 points). May be a good time to get on one of those Macchu Picchu tours with the flight to Cuzco included.

This is very interesting. Departures by Eagle affiliates in ORD drop by a total of 428 departures per month. MD-80 departures are down 562 per month. However, the 737 departures are up 598. So what you have is a loss of 428 regional departures, and a gain of 36 Mainline depatures, plus add in the US depatures (I believe they have something close to 20 or 30 flights in ORD, all mainline), and you are seeing Mainline flying increase quite a bit and regional flying going bye bye.

The large sudden deployment of 738s there is very interesting, although I suppose it's possible that the 738s were already there in MAR since we are only looking at an APR schedule update. I find it interesting that AA only did this schedule load after the deal was complete. It's also interesting that it is essentially a one month schedule. My intuition is that there is something important coming (maybe it's just the slot reshuffle) and they were holding the April schedule for it. Now they appear to be holding the May schedule.

United has also been doing this one month at a time style scheduling lately, but I don't remember AA doing it. Not sure why it's the new thing, although it seems they mostly shrink down from the proposed schedule so it may just be a rouse to get more bookings by selling more product and then cancel down.

Okay -- Why not.

FL flew this route for what seems like a decade.

Maybe UP will even use FL's old gate for this flight -- D7

Hells bells -- it beats getting to MIA and then finding out your final leg is a UP Q400.

UA ORD-FWA APR 3>4 MAY 3>4 JUN 3>4 JUL 3>4 AUG 3>4

First increase for UA at FWA since the dawn of the Great Recession when it went from 4x to 3x daily (and good timing as AA is going to 3x daily in April). I know that FWA-ORD was an OO-only at-risk route for a while; is it back to a fee-for-departure route now?

UPDATE: I checked united.com. The new flights are already loaded and available for booking, and are on OO CR2s.

On a related note, with the $2M incentives and $600K SCASD grant, is EWR or IAD next from UA at FWA?

G4 LAS-XNA MAY 0.3>0.1

Is this a precursor to the route being dropped? I can't see how one flight a week will work. Most people fly on the Friday departure Monday return flights for the weekend rather than a week-long stay in Vegas. Don't see how this route is sustainable at 1x weekly.

Any thoughts?

Nevermind, given the other G4 schedules, this can't be correct....

Don't worry, you won't have to worry about that since UP doesn't fly Q400s

I know what you mean. It must suck to be afraid of the little "puddle jumpers", as many call them, and have one operate your flight after getting off of a 737!

Could we see the 738 on the route now that it's dropped to 2x? It's been 3x M80 for quite awhile now.

I checked, still showing two MD80's.

I love the MD80 though so wouldn't be against having it stick around for a bit. It's fast being replaced by 738's and A319's!

I agree, no doubt…it's vintage. I'm booked on one next Friday back to STL. It just seems, with this flight being the only remaining MD80 flight left out of LAX, the clock is ticking.

So, here is what changed for AA in ORD for April (per month dpts):

738 1580>2178
E75 738>712
CR7 1444>1408
ER4 3696>3507
ERD 3324>3147
M80 2184>1644
M83 318>296
763 180 same
757 270 same
777 150 same

You figure that at some point, Eagle will cease or reduce flying ORD routes to PMUS cities such as PHL, DCA, PIT, and CLT.

That would seem to be coming, but I *think* this sched change shows some commitment to ORD.

I believe as recently as 4-5 years ago STL-LAX was running 4 r/t per day, now down to two..   I believe this will ultimately be a prime candidate for the A319, as the 738 is too much plane for the route. Maybe at that point we could see an increase back to three trips per day

Contrary to A.net myths, AA has not shown otherwise.

I'm not sure that is much of a myth. US offers nothing that makes ORD superfluous. I think ORD probably loses money and has for a very long time. They can' let it go, however. Geographically and population-wise they are stuck with it. Charlotte is similar. Miami doesn't replace it and while I think it was marginally profitable for US, I think it loses money under the AA product costs. Nevertheless, neither ORD nor CLT will be closed.

PHX is in danger. If you read the Attorney General agreements (I'm assuming each State is the same as the State I saw) all there needs to be is a "materially adverse condition that raises the cost to maintain service" and AA is free to close the hub in PHX. It also states labor action, strikes, terrorism, and even potentially extreme weather as a reason to be able to break the commitment. BTW, the commitment is only to maintain PHX with 1% of nationwide industry enplanements which allows an almost 50% reduction in total PHX enplanements and since US probably doesn't even make up 50% of enplanements they can essentially close the hub anyway.

I agree. But, it certainly is common for an airline that is combining to have one or the other work specific routes, especially between hubs.

When AA bought TWA, there came a time when all ORD-STL routes were operated by PMTW planes and crews. I think AA had also planned for PMTW aircraft and crews to operate several other routes out of ORD, but that was changed post 9/11. ORD-MCI comes to mind.
