Spirit Airlines Special DFW Paint Job

Sun Dec 15, 2013 2:56 pm

Was surprised to see Spirit Airlines has quietly unveiled an A319 all dressed up in a DFW themed paint job.

N618NK was just spotted here in DFW (12/15/13) with a rather colorful set of markings on her way to ATL. No pix yet of her or a press release. Does anyone have any additional information?

Wow, their passengers endure being loaded into a plane like sardines but they are going to care what the outside of the plane looks like? Unless it's a ad for the DFW Tourism board I'm not sure why they would do this.

Well they've exhausted ad space on the inside of the plane so maybe they're going for the full flying billboard effect?

Say what you will, but people fly them. I would never fly Spirit - not my personal preference. But every time I've ever been anywhere seeing their flights board - including at DFW - the gate areas always look packed.

I suppose trying to raise their profile in one of their larger stations where they've grown pretty considerably in recent years. I don't think Spirit has ever had such a special paint scheme for their other large stations, have they?

I believe N618NK would be an A320....518NK a 319.

This isn't the 319 that blew the motor that's been sitting at DFW is it? The last time it tried flying to ATL, it only came back with one working engine. NK might actually parlay it into some sort of "Our engines are half off, and so are our fares!" decal.....

I've flown Spirit a few times and the experiences are always less than pleasant. I go to the airport knowing that is going to suck. It's not so much the cramped seating and excessive advertisement as it is the type of passengers who fly them (I've only flown them to LAS). But I have and will continue to endure it when the fares are significantly cheaper than the competition.

Anyway, back to topic here. Is the scheme about the airport or the city? Looking forward to seeing a photo.

So 10 replies in and yet not pics... Where is that icon that says "This thread is useless without pictures"? Since NK loves to advertise, how about they advertise the same way mass transportation does on buses? I mean who wouldn't love to look up at a plane through some binoculars and see an advertisement of some sort!?

It looks like someone slapped a bumper sticker across the fuselage.
IMO the background should have been white instead of blood orange.

Agree with Capt.fantastic. I actually think it would look pretty good if not for that orange background. That background confines the Dallas and Fort Worth and is very bumper stickery. Also I wonder what is the significance of just touting service to PHL, LAX, CUN, and MSP when they serve 20 or so other cities nonstop from DFW. I'm guessing DFW payed for some if not all of the ad wrap, so perhaps Spirit didn't have all the 'creative' license.

That graphic design work is AWFUL. Holy Crap was it done in MS Paint or Microsoft Office?
Not to mention the fact that it's a slap-crap-on sort of job. And you probably have to pay an extra fee to board it...

While awful, I'm surprised they didn't just spell out "DALLAS" in duct tape plastered across the side.

Even though the word Dallas and Fort Worth is Huge it is still very hard to read what it says unless you are really close. Aircraft was in LGA this morning and a coworker put a cell phone picture on Facebook and you can see its a Special Scheme but can't read any of it. Cheap Cheap Cheap !!!!!!!!!!!

Currently enroute ORD-DEN if anyone wants to try and grab it out their, it is actually trackable on flightware by using the reg N618NK.

Looks like the decals were applied in TPA of all places as it was their from Dec 6 thru Dec 14.

Cheers

This "special" livery looks craptacular, perhaps if they didn't try to get so fancy by waving the Dallas and Fort Worth, and put it above the windows it might look better. Also I agree that it would also look better in white. The good news is that I don't think 99% of Spririts passengers really give a crap what their plane looks like. Its almost like the ole Ryan Air strategy, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Do you think any airlines paint planes thinking it will honestly cause more people to fly them? It's usually a round about way of brand building. That said, I realize you're just kicking Spirit for the hell of it, so do continue.

Actually, I'm not. I do think the livery didn't turn out well. Spirit makes money, people travel on them, thats a legimate business model. I don't care for the rigid adherence to the rules they have and I certainly don't care for the seating, but obviously there are enough people that don't mind the seating and the strict rules and do fly them. My point in those two quotes that you provided was that the people who sacrifice comfort for savings would also sacrifice ascetics to save a dollar. If Spirits business model works for you then, thats great I hope you save alot of money, but its not mine.

As for branding, what does this plane say "Spirit is Dallas/Fort Worth's Hometown Airline", is that what they are going for? I honestly don't think that will work,

Hopefully they don't embarrass the city of Fort Lauderdale and the entire Broward County.

If I had to guess I'd say that DFW approached them with this design and ask them to do it as a favor to them for a favor (current or to be named later). They probably came up with this, didn't account for how it would look on the plane (white plane with a orange square and the window placement). There is a reason they didn't issue a press release.

Frankly I think it would be wise to go the Western Pacific route and sell ad liveries like they do with buses. No one cares they are there to save money nothing else.

isn't supposed to look like an old school suitcase? I mean look at the type face and the images. the letters look like 60's post card font, old looking football pic and a vintage shot of big tex. i think they hit that mark and because of that i kinda like it.

I'm a sucker for those old postcards with the name of the city or attraction where the letters are filled with photos of the place in question. On that point alone, I'm a fan of the concept, but the orange bumper-sticker around it looks horrible given the Spirit livery has no horizontal lines to match. Better than another boring Euro-white scheme running around though...

Plus why did they have to do that Wave think so that the windows go directly thru the second part of the city name. The route listing on the Dallas side should have also been split up to go on either side of the doors rather again just to have it interrupted.

the wave completes the look. its how the font looked on the old postcards/ stickers. now the other cities simply make no sense to me. why would you put other destinations on a destination sticker. to me that says hey we have been to dallas but all we wanted to know was how do we get out of here. so we bought this sticker to show that we went to dallas but we hated it and these are all the places we could now go. basically it hurts the look.

on another note i would have put the the DFW airport siticker on the nose where the AIRBUS A320 word mark is.

none-the-less i like the bumper sticker look
