I left SFO yesterday afternoon, 2 ships behind a classic "Continental Airlines" 757. It is pathetic how Euro-White livery has taken over modern day thinking. And then there was a Lufthansa "classic" A320 at CDG 2 weeks ago. PLEASE airlines, there was a time when originality and design separated your company from the pack. Delta, are you listening? No? Well, I thought so. The TWA double globe was beautiful, but for my vote, go back to 1968! And what do we have to do to get a modicum of color back into the cabins? Why is taupe-beige on the walls, bulkheads, carpets, seats so desirable? Yes, we are riding high class buses, but really, add a touch of color! (Apologies if I am sounding like Nathan Lane in "The Bird Cage".)

Good news. I was hoping this would be an outcome of the merger. TWA's last livery was so classy looking - really hope that's what they go with for the retro jet. Too bad they can't also paint a jet in the pre-merger (i.e., pre-last-merger) USAirways livery - another really classy scheme so much nicer than what they have now.

I hate reading between the lines on that email but are they saying the HP, Allegheny, Piedmont and PSA aircraft are going to be repainted and only keep one US?

I interpret it as them saying they're going to keep those, and add a TWA, old-style AA and current US plane to the mix.

Completely agree on bringing back the dark blue/Wolf scheme. My personal bias would at some point introduce most of the varied images of the past. Wouldn't mind seeing a QQ livery flying around again.

Would love to finally see a TWA A330 as the airline ordered 20 years ago but never took delivery.

Side note to the link, good to see they're considering a return of the "scissors eagle" logo on the new livery (although perhaps it should be updated to reflect the new font being used by the airline).

I'm hoping they go for this TWA livery on say an A330 or 777:

Yes the dark blue Wolf livery of the late 90s/early 2000s would be nice, it would look stunning on a 763 which US never flew before. But what about the three-tone rust livery of the 80s? And what about the blue/silver livery of the early 90s? I think that the latter two would look good on a 737-800 or an A321.

I think also that the TWA Twin Globe scheme of the 60s would look great on a 777 for a retro livery. That would be awesome.

I'd bet double-globe on a 738. Classy scheme when T-Dub was healthy and a global icon. As much as I'd like to see it on a 777, it'll be on a smaller frame so it gets around the system--strikes me as kinda dumb to place it on a jet running between DFW and LAX and places like London and Shanghai when a good chunk of TWA employees and veterans who the gesture is aimed at live in places like STL and MCI.

Love the overall idea of retro/heritage liveries .... nice to hear a TW livery is in the works and glad to know they will keep a US & AA heritage livery as well ... would be nice to see Ozark, Empire, Mohawk, RenoAir, and AirCal too imho...

'Double Globe' that baby... !

It bums me out when some airlines apply these 'retro' liveries to larger jets thus smaller or non-hub markets never get a chance to see it. Fortunately, AA, US, CO(UA) have applied 'retro' liveries to at least one or more (US and CO/UA come to mind) frame in their domestic fleet. Hope to see it added one of their Airbuses or 738, thus allowing more cities would get a chance to see it.

I have always been hoping AA would do something like this. I have always been a TWA fan and I grew up flying them. The double globe livery is before my time so that doesn't interest me much personally. TWA's newest colors were amazing, but it might be too new for this application. I can't really picture the twin stripe livery on a newer plane even though it's the livery that reminds me most of TWA, but I can picture TWA's newest colors working very nicely on a modern plane. Ahhh who knows I'll be happy with anything TWA lol.

But either this or the double globe would be fine with me. I'd also be happy with the final scheme, which was gorgeous.

I would throw in my .02 for the twin globes as well, but Star Stream 319 just does not have that ring to it..

It would look good on either the 738 or A320's. However one of the older liveries below are going to be the retro livery. on those I would like to see the Globe livery be the livery. it would look great on any widebody.

As a proud ex employee of TWA I will be happy to see any version on any aircraft. But first prize for me is the double globe on the A350, maybe a A330 until they arrive. I still remember the days when we out carried Pan Am and BOAC out of London with all those golden globe tails.

US has a history of doing the special liveries on the same a/c type dating back to the HP days.

The 757s from HP to now the A319 at US. I have a hard time believing any new heritage planes will be on a/c other than the A319.
I want to live in an old and converted 727...

A Starstrem A321 would be the '707'-schizzle (since I doubt it would be a 757).
It worked with Lufthansa's retrojet.

IMHO the TWA double globe while nostalgic was the single most horrid livery the company ever carried. The globe logo itself was good but the neither fuselage scheme nor the tail background for the globe did it any justice at all. I think the final design was by far their best but if isnt one that leaps to mind when think of TWA and its history.

A bunch of airlines in the 90s adopted dark blue. Continental, United, USAirways, Air Canada, Aeromexico, even TWA adopted it (never having blue livery previously), and Delta caught on late. It's not original. I'd prefer the shades of red livery from the onset of USAir, but it may derive too much from the latest of the Allegheny liveries to count for much.

Of course, so why use a brand color and logo at all? Just paint it white. Or gray or green primer.

Instead, people remember a good flying experience and may associate that good experience with the colors and branding when they remember. That's the intent.

Then why paint them at all?

Airlines spend a lot of money on paint schemes, so clearly your assessment has some issues. In fact, a major part of branding is drive the brand into the potential consumer's head. Every time they see an AA plane, you want them to think "American Airlines." Every time they see an AA kiosk, advert, employee, etc. you want them to think "American Airlines."

That way, when it's time for them to buy a ticket and they see your airline's corporate symbol next to the ticket, they think: "American Airlines" and if your competitor hasn't been building brand recognition into the customer...AA gets the sale.

Have you noticed how Coca-Cola billboards work? They just show the corporate logo. Oh, sure, there's a little "enjoy" or "drink," but that's all there is. It's simply brand identity. Hammer your brand until it sticks.

And so, contrary to what you have asserted, passengers DO subconsciously make purchases based, in part, on how the plane is painted.

The "retrojet" craze is starting to get out of hand. With all the mergers and acquisitions due to bankruptcy, soon all we will see will be a fleet of retrojets (and alliance branded a/c)   . It is impossible for me to travel anywhere without seeing at least several retro or alliance flagged a/c.

I agree. I don't think it serves any purpose and only confuses customers and weakens the branding. Many customers are too young to even remember most of the predecessor carriers.
