Norwegian To Lease Two 787-9s

Wed Dec 18, 2013 7:02 am

Seems like Norwegian want something bigger than their -8s so are leasing two -9s from 2016

http://media.norwegian.com/en/#/pres...-two-new-bigger-dreamliners-942404

Quote:

Norwegian has signed an agreement to acquire two new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Both aircraft will be delivered in the first quarter of 2016. The 787-9 is larger than the 787-8 that Norwegian currently operates on its long-haul routes.

Norwegian continues to expand its international operations by signing an agreement with MG Aviation to lease two new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Both aircraft are scheduled to be in operation during the first quarter of 2016. Today, Norwegian has three 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft in its long-haul fleet, as well as five more on order. The company will have 10 long-haul aircraft in its fleet, where of four will be delivered in 2014, one in 2015 and two in 2016.

Although I'm not sure if this is a new order for Boeing, as I'm not sure if MG Aviation has any on order, or not

smart move...should definitely lead to better operating economics especially on the longer EU-BKK services in particular

In this article (in Norwegian) http://e24.no/boers-og-finans/norweg...tiller-stoerre-dreamliner/22676194

It says that Norwegian are in dialogue for additional 787-9's beyond the 2 that have been ordered.

Can't remember where and when, and the exact number, but Norwegian has previously talked about a longterm longhaul fleet of 15ish aircrafts or so, so expect more to come

Kjos has even stated jokingly he would like to eventually fly 100 787. Nice move by Norwegian

Depending on how the LGW routes work out, I wonder what the prospects are of DY basing the 789s there... The LCC long haul market in the UK has been tried before and always failed: Laker, Oasis, Air Asia X to name but a few... let's hope DY are a bit more successful!

MG Aviation is not currently listed as a Boeing customer for any of their commercial products, past and present.

So either they're going to be placing a new order, or they might be acting as an agent for another lessor (ALC, CIT, ILFC) that has a 787-9 order.

I think you will find that this is the Nakash 787-9 order from Dec 2006.
http://boeing.mediaroom.com/2006-12-...-Sign-Deal-for-Two-787-Dreamliners

The leasing company MG Aviation is based in New York and owned by Jordache Enterprises. Jordache Enterprises Chairman is Joe Nakash.

If that's correct, then presumably they are not going to Arkia - as was originally expected.

Another sign that the 787 is shedding its unruly ways and becoming the plane it was meant to be. I again saw the JAL 787 fly over SAN this morning - it's been quite regular lately and it looks stunning flying in over the coast.

I hope so. There was a thread here few months ago about how the 787 & A350 could finally make the long haul LCC model viable.

Good for Boeing and the 787 customers. I've seen JAL 787 land in SAN several times, she does look gorgeous and easily identifiable, even from a long distance. She's the perfect airliner to fly long haul out of SAN, I think we'll see more 787 services to SAN in the next few years.

The 787-8 in Norwegian set up has 291 seats? How many will the 9 seat?

Is this an indication that Norwegian is happy with the 787 after all after the initial problems they had followed by all the whining they did?

While Norwegian has expressed a lot of frustration with the technical problems (helped in no part by the fact that unlike most current 787 operators it is their only long haul aircraft which means they can't be as operationally flexible other than the leases they brought in) they have overall been very positive about in regards to its performance and passenger response when it does work.

DY's Kjos did say that the 788 is a superb flying machine when it is flying. I guess he has confidence in Boeing in working out the kinks as time goes by and sooner the better.

Lately, I noticed less media coverage of 787 issues. Does this mean the 787's reliability is getting better or just media losing interest in the 787? Hoping for the former.

"Just media losing interest" would be fine too. About time that every little problem is not overblown by the media.

EI-LNC had a hickup lately that resulted in a rather lengthy delay and a Meridian A330 had to be brought in to fly ARN-BKK-ARN get the Dreamliners in sync again.

The one in this picture is sitting on the west side of the airport when I drove by at 730 this morning... Is it an extra for this evening flight or a mechanical? It was parked far northwest corner of field by end of runway with two air stairs pulled up to it.

That tail looks weird without the famous Norwegian. I'd like to see Roald Amundsen, my favorite Norwegian on a 787.

Don't boo an airline that thinks outside the box, I know it's a long shot but I'm hoping they'd give my hometown's airport (SAN) a go.

It went tech and is awaiting for spare parts "from Boeing" according to the airline spokesman.

I got a shot of the two. LNA on her second attempt passing LNC at the remote spot this morning (Dec 22nd). Picture is here @

I'm sort of surprised given how much complaining they were doing about the 787 and its problems. But good for them, and good for the 789 program. Also... that paint scheme as got to go. I'm sorry but I agree. It kinda looks like a tampon. There, I said it. #sorryImnotsorry lol

The Norwegian Air Shuttle colours is indeed different from the rest with their red nose and dark blue belly belt These colours has stayed with Norwegian since the 737 operation started in September 2002 and wicked tongues has since that time called their aicraft used tampons.
