ANC Snowy Takeoffs In Beautiful Light

Wow, great video, thanks for sharing that. That's the stuff right there man, I don't why but there just seems to be a special allure about the freighter world that the commercial world lost long ago. I love that intro shot with the 747 rolling out and then a DC3 pops into the screen, only in Alaska.

I love the DC-3, too. But the MD-11 is my favorite DC product.

Yeah, the DC-3 really steals this show.
Otherwise, it's just another day-in-the-life of Anchorage.
Granted, it was pretty chilly on Dec 19th (the day the vid was taken), but some of us get to enjoy these views all the time!

...Not sure I'd go that far. Live here for one year, and you'll be begging for St Maarten. As I have, for eight years. And I have yet to go!

And, I believe the statistic still stands true, but for the longest time, ANC saw more 747 operations per day than any other airport in North America, and only a few places on other continents beat us, to boot!

On a second watch another great thing about this video is the exhuberance of the crew filming. They sound like a bunch of A.netter geeks...."oooh look, it's the 800, wow" (when the Cathay rolls by), and then when the ANA lifts off they say "oh man, that guy is heavy". That's just cool how much they love the job. You'd never catch me at work saying "oh wow man, look at that wire transfer hit the bank account, that's real heavy bro". Alas, back to the bank I go for another sodding day of payment analytics. No wonder I spend half the day on this site.

Is it just my imagination. Looking at some of the takeoffs. It seem like the freighters need and use less runway to get airborne when compared to their passenger counterparts. Perhaps the snow is playing havoc with my eyes.

Yes the DC-3 was just perfect, it exactly shows the range of normal ops in Alaska. Those 744 / 748 planes look real good, IMO.

Not exactly. It looks like the 74X freighters in the video above for example use less runway than their pax equivalents. I've watched quite a few 747 passenger flights take off at SEA, HNL, SFO and JFK which use a lot of runway before they get airborne. The ANC freighters look like they use less runway.

Good Sir,

The only meaningful conclusion that we can come to is that based on your observation of 747 departures, the 747 Freighters at ANC use less runway than what you have observed elsewhere. There are far too many other variables to consider, to draw any other conclusion. That said, I would suggest that had you viewed your 747 departures from SEA/HNL/SFO/JFK at an ambient temperature of 10 degrees Fahrenheit, they would probably have rolled a much shorter distance too!
