Any New Aircraft For Area 51 Commute?

Fri Dec 27, 2013 8:25 pm

Just wondering if the 737s used for employees commuting from LAS will need to be replaced, and if so, what aircraft they might use?

I think they just recently replaced the 737-200s with 737-500/600s within the last 3 years

Looks like all B736 at least recently: http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KTNX

I believe those were ex-Air China birds, which is ... interesting.

While they've only had them for 4-5 years, they came to EG & G from Air China who inherited them in the merger with China Southwest. The fleet is 10-12 years old, which really isn't that old considering the previous Janet a/c were 30+ years old when they were retired. So these planes will be around for at least another decade or more.

I thought the 736s weren't new when they brought them in - so wondering just how much life they had left in them. Would they order the 737 Max or do they consistenting use previously owned aircraft?

Any idea how many roundtrips they make per day? Just trying to figure out how fast they are adding cycles.

Anyone have a breakdown of the complete fleet?

These aren't the flights you are looking for...

There are also a variety of King Airs and B1900's in their mix too. I've noticed them at LAS the last few times I've been there. Also they show up on the satellite images at LAS and Groom Lake.

Three of the 6 ex-Air China 736s were built in 2003 and the other 3 in 2001 so they should have many more years of service left.

For what they use them for a Max would be overkill. The 736's will be around for a while. Long after WJ retires theres.

Anyone find it at least a little odd that we would use former Chinese-operated aircraft to fly into one of the US most top secret military installations? Don't mind me - just being extremely paranoid.

Maybe a bit of irony here, but, no. They're commercial 737's, that's all, and probably came at a good price because nobody else wanted them. Everybody knows what they are, where they go, when they go, how they get there, and has a general idea of why. It's what goes on inside the buildings there that is the top secret part.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not following me!

I'm sure these aircraft were given a rather thorough once over for any "surprises".

You're correct, they weren't new. Each airframe sees just a fraction of normal cycles and hours everyday, so you can safely assume they have several decades of service life left in them. By that time, even the MAX will be old technology.

Heck, if they need more 736's I am sure WS would be more than happy to get that phone call
