From a testing perspective don't the RTO's count as part of the block time and that is what Airbus monitor not necessarily airborne time?

It should take place at the very end of the flight test campaign.

The MTOW RTO test could potentially damage the aircraft so you don't want to do it before flight testing had been completed.

Has Airbus made any press releases on how the test flying is going in respect to performance vs predictions? Or do they wait until it is certified?

Isn't this the test that caused the loss of an A330 during certification? I believe that Airbus changed the test proceedure following the hull loss. Pretty sure its just retarded to idle.

OEM testing can be performed with a throttle chop to understand airplane behavior. Certification testing requires a fuel cut ie an engine completely shut down.

Back to the flight campaign hours. It has always been said that the campaign covers 2,500 hours. I am presuming that a fair number of those hours are to cover re-tests as things change. To date there has been no obvious area requiring extra tests but there will have been numerous tweaks here and there - especially in the flight software so some of the flying must be retesting.

No, the series of events were kicked of by an inprecise definition of the test to be performed and the aircraft got away from them.

High altitude tests have been completed and MSN3 will leave for TLS tomorrow. The crew is currently reviewing which route they will take: either take the same route back or go via the the great circle route. It will depend on weather conditions I guess.

I would bet fo the gc route.
The situation is a lot calmer on the Atlantic, + a long frontal zone will only start affecting that route over France.
I had a quick look at the charts ... They'd have a tailwind component of some 60 kt... Time to beat some records !
I'll upload them... only if I'm right

OK. See the Atlantic surfaace chart

and the winds aloft at FL 39*0. The winds in the Northern hemisphere would tenfd to be weaker at higher altitudes

Taking the forecast hour, one should translate the frontal zone on the first chart some 100 Nm to the East.

IMO, with a current airliner, the route choice is a no-brainer... as close to the GC as possible !
Still remember that they'd have to fly a southerener route if they have an ETOPS 120 concern ( which I don't know about )

Airbus has their annual press conference today - http://www.airbus.com/live/ ... I guess an a350 update will be there. Airbus is also taking questions on twitter. I do not twitter so someone here who does can perhaps ask the following( i.e if Airbus does not say anything on this during the update)

1. Is flutter testing finished?

2. Has the static bird reached ultimate load?
