Not sure that he was blessed with the best decision making skills. Apart from the soft sand, those trees were always going to be a hazard.

Luck guy to walk away.

To me it looks like even if he had cleared the beach he would have ended in the trees! Thanks for posting.

Indeed. He was either going scuba diving or playing lumberjack.

Better view from in front:

You can see he was hard right rudder even before he was in the water. Looks like some pretty fundamental structural damage where the right wing meets the fuselage.

Oh wow. I spent lots of time at that very beach as a child. I don't understand why the pilot would risk taking off from there - especially at high tide. If they had at least waited until low tide, there would have been significantly more beach to take off from (as seen in my photo below).

Or, even better, they could have pushed it up the launching ramp (which is easily wide enough for an plane) into the carpark and had the aircraft towed back to Ardmore or Dairy Flat.

At least they got the emergency landing right.

Looking at the view from behind in the other (linked) liveleak video, you can see why he was going to the left. Cliffs ahead.

I presume the sandcastles precluded him starting his take off run further back, but really

I'm wondering why he didn't try the takeoff in the opposite direction. Likely he would have had a tailwind - but the videos make it look like a lot less terrain/ trees to clear.

Would the plane pick up speed faster if equipped with tundra tires?

Great video.

Surprised he didn't go for the soft field TO config with some flaps in there. (If he did, I didnt notice)

That gets weight off the nose gear and gets you off the ground quicker.

It looks to me like he had a passenger too. If this was a landing due to an engine emergency....I wouldn't get into the plane again as a passenger. Also, if you have a short beach to take-off from, wouldn't you want to unload as much weight (ie. passenger) to make sure you make it? Most accidents are a result of a string of preventable miss-steps. This was a perfect example of the result.
I'd rather be flying.

what does sand do to engines?

I believe he could have turned left if he was airborne. He should heve dumped as much weight as possible and told his pax to take a taxi. It would have been less costly...

But hindsight is always 20/20.

But one question is why he verged towards the waterline, instead of keeping clear. Perhaps fear of crashing into the trees, which would maybe more costly than a mostly dry tumble at the waterline.
