Will We See An AA 757 In NC?

Mon Jan 13, 2014 5:41 am

Hello All,

Did a search and nothing came up, sorry if it has been posted before. Just wondering if we will see any of their 757's in the NC and when will we see them start showing up? I know AA plans to retire several 757's but there are quite a few that are configured for transatlantic service and also several that have been refitted with new interiors for domestic and Hawaii service. I think the new livery should look sharp on the 75'. At first I, along with many others; hated the new livery but it is growing on me, especially the front part of the fuselage. Thanks in advance for the info or any photos. On a side note, does anybody have photos of the refurbished interiors on the domestic 757's?

Thanks!

My guess is that we will eventually see both MD80s and 757s in the new colors, albeit not many of either since both of these aircraft types - especially the MD80s - are being rapidly retired.

At least pre-merger, AA was planning on retaining the 20 international (JY-configured) 757s longer-term, but that might change now with the merger. Although I tend to doubt it - some of the PMUS 757s are among the oldest still in operation, and the company may now decide it's instead better to slow down the PMAA 757 retirements and prioritize getting rid of some of the older PMUS 757s, and to replace the PMUS international 757s used on PHL/CLT-Europe with the more-nicely-configured PMAA international 757s.

For now, the closest we'll get to seeing either aircraft type repainted is the airplane page at the back of American Way.

I also agree that the new livery will probably look particularly nice on the 757 - I look forward to seeing that.

I keep hearing that the last MD-80 will retire between 2017 and 2019. Considering that those planes will need several more polishings, it seems to me that painting them might be more cost effective than polishing them several more times.

I looked at the Boeing website, and AA took delivery of 12 757s in 1998-99 and 20 757s in 2001-02. So, that's a total of 26 planes that range in age from 12 to 16 years in age. Considering that the 757s haven't done a lot of short-haul flying (although ORD-STL comes to mind), they probably aren't heavy in terms of cycles.

I could see these planes sticking around for several more years. In which case, like the MD-80s, painting once might be more cost effective than dealing with bare metal aircraft.

Actually, it's pretty easy. If you want to see all AA aircraft in the new livery, check out pages 74-75 in this month's American Way

Probably during the next heavy maintenance of both aircraft that are not being retired. The issue would be to spend that money on painting an aircraft that won't be in the fleet long enough to pay off. Once the merger is in place and consummated I am sure there will be discussions and debates as to which aircraft are being kept and which ones are being taken out of service.

When are US Airways planning to phase out their 757s? IIRC the TATL East birds were supposed to hang around for a while, in which case you could well be seeing a 757 in the new c/s within 12 months.

MIA-MCO also. The flight is so short that you do not even get a drink. You climb to only FL190 and only a few minutes after reaching cruising altitude you already start descending. It is the shortest flight of a 757 I have ever seen in my life. American has at least 6 flights daily MIA-MCO, if not more, and the majority of them are 757s.

I am sure that at least one 757 will be repainted in the new colors, especially if the airplane will stay in the fleet past 2020.

8-9x daily, all on 757s.

There is a beverage service. Sometimes FA's might be lazy, but it's scheduled for one.

Technically there was already an AA 757 in the new colors. They used one as a prototype for the new colors and its in the behind the scenes video.
