Detroit Area Question - Jet Spotted On Approach
Was just driving along Michigan avenue in Canton and saw the lights of a jet on approach heading Southeast at a pretty low altitude and swaying visibly due to the wind conditions. The trouble is, DTW is to the Southwest and the only other strip around is YIP, but as far as I know, commercial jets don't land there. Where would be a good place to check and see if there was an emergency re-routing due to the snow?

KYIP gets a handful of daily cargo and charter flights. Also, USA Jet operates a cargo and charter fleet and is based there. Looks like you saw a USA Jet DC-9 coming in for a landing from MCI -- http://flightaware.com/live/flight/JUS192
These YIP flights often come in and depart over my home in Saline.

I'm not - it's in even more wrong direction than DTW.

Yep, the size is about right. Man, I wouldn't have wanted to be on that plane... Didn't realize YIP got planes of that size.

Me too! Especially an original "baby" DC-9-10. Not too many of them left flying.

I can't remember which cargo carrier it is, but there's a DC9-15 (former TW) that regularly flies into RFD. Same carrier?!?

YIP has always been, at least in recent history, a pretty strong cargo airport. National Air Cargo and Connie Kalitta's air line are based there. I'm sure some others are. DC-9 is probably among the smaller aircraft it gets, but most common when it comes to commercial air cargo. Kalitta's 747s have been there plenty of times.

That is Ameristar and the aircraft is N784TW and it has been around, but don't see it actually flying for TWA. First airline was CO in 1967, was it possibly leased from TWA?

Oh how the times have changed. There was a time when NW's DC-9 fleet looked every bit as old as it was. They did a good job in the late 1990's and early 2000's of cleaning the fleet up, though.

You'll see DC-8s and even the occasional whale landing there! It is a far cry from the traffic it used to get there, though.
