I came across this video of Etihad A346 taking off in Malaga.

Since when does Etihad fly into Malaga with the A340? Will this service continue? I rather doubt they fly all year around because the new longer runway is closed for some months during the year.

None of the Middle East big three (MEB3) - Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar - fly to Malaga on a scheduled basis.

Noticed there was a UAE 747SP in the Background at about 14 seconds in the vid. wonder if this 346 supported whatever the SP was doing there.....!

Almost certainly a holiday charter - Note a UAE 744 also parked behind on roll out.

This was departing empty back to AUH after operating a one-off charter to AGP mid-2013. It was the only time EY visited AGP to my knowledge.

Really, why is that? Noise abatement? Lower activity during the winter months?

From what I remember, Marbella, a small, wealthy jewel town west of Malaga is where they vacation.
AGP is the closest airport to Marbella. Malaga is nice but its beaches & suburbs so full of budget EU tourists,
I'm sure the emirs and their families would just as soon distance themselves from that scene as much as possible!

RWY12/30 NOT USABLE
I believe just due to the amount of traffic at the moment only one runway is needed.

Navigator you are correct with the new runway being the shorter one. Can one count the runway end safety area (RESA) as part of the runway? If yes the 2 times 240 feet would make the new one longer.

Out of curiosity, why is the new AGP runway not a true parallel runway, but at an angle to the old one? Land occupation or alignment requirements with the surrounding mountains? (I am aware of the small river and the surrounding industrial area, but such things haven't stopped other infrastructure projects in Spain before).

This flight was operating for the Amiri flight, they usually use A340-600. They fly them usually to Moroccan cities the most as Rabat, Casablanca and Oujda.
Abu Dhabi Amiri flight use 3 B747-400, 1 B777-300ER, 1 B777-2200ER, 1 A320 and 2 B737-800.
One B787-8 will be delivered soon.
