Asiana Airlines’ President Soo Cheon Kim revealed the company’s plans and strategy for introducing the A380 on February 10, 2014 at a press conference in Seoul.

Asiana will receive two A380 aircraft which will commence operations to Los Angeles from July 30, 2014. These aircraft are expected to further enhance the quality of one of Asiana’s most popular long haul destinations. Prior to being introduced on the Los Angeles route, Asiana plans to temporarily utilize the A380s on short and medium haul international destinations like Tokyo Narita, Osaka, Hong Kong and Bangkok from June.

Asiana’s A380 strategy will place primary focus on the maximization of seat efficiency and the enhancement of premium seat quality. The new aircraft will consist of a total of 495 seats--12 First Class, 66 Business Class, and 417 Travel Class seats. Asiana specifically designed this new aircraft to enhance seat efficiency and to meet the demands of each class.

What biz seat type are they planning on utilizing? The information seems to indicate that there will be "enhancements" to the premium seating. Are they planning on just re-using the Quadra Smartium seats?

Wow! Another A380 into LAX! I just wished all of them came in at the same tine! That would be great to see at TBIT.

Congrats LAX on yet another A380!

Hopeful for Skymark and their A380 to come to LAX as well. Much better to LAX than JFK, IMO.

Thanks HeeseokKoo!! I

The seatmap looks like they're using the Smartium seats in Business and the Suites from there new 777 in First

Like to know what sort of "enhancements" we can expect

LAX will be almost tied as the busiest A380 destination with LHR I believe.

@LAX for the summer of 2014:

Qantas SYD & MEL
Korean 2x ICN
Air France CDG
Singapore NRT
Emirates DXB
British 2x LHR
China Southern CAN
Asiana ICN

11 daily flights

@ LHR for the summer of 2014:

Emirates 5x DXB
Singapore 2x daily + 4x weekly SIN
Malaysia 2x KUL
Qantas 2x DXB

11 - 12 daily flights

LAX definitely has the most A380 operators of any airport.

Why do all airlines start flying A380 to LAX instead of SFO. Load is an important factor but SQ flies two daily 777 flights to SFO and BA has two 747s to SFO. Any reason why everyone goes to LAX first? Also flying to SFO on A380 is only seasonal at best. Example: LH does not fly its A380 in winter. I wish SFO got more A380s.

Almost double market size could be a good reason.

Most international carriers offer much more capacity to LA than they do from SF.

Keep in mind, SFO has TWO (2) A380 gates only. This is a serious operational limit.

As for SQ, they fly SIN-HKG-SFO, and SIN-ICN-SFO. The via HKG flight has A380 potential, and it was tried before. But the aircraft has payload restrictions which made the flight unattractive. SQ has 5 more A380s on order, which as the new HGW variant. They will definitely restart A380 operations to SFO with those.

As for BA, LAX is a busier destination. LAX used to have 3 daily flights on 747-400s and occasionally 777-300ERs. These 3 got consolidated to 2 A380 flights.

I was in Korea last month, and I would have no problem choosing OZ.

I've actually always viewed OZ a little gem in Asia.

I doubt OZ has taken much of a hit at all in general public perceptions. After all world famous big airlines crash planes also, and business goes on.

The designation was busiest A380 destination. Otherwise, DXB would be at the top for A380 flights...

I was thinking more because it seems as if the crash was caused by terrible culture inside the cockpit, and potentially could be rampant throughout the airline. But I'm not the right person to speak on these topics; I don't have the experience or knowledge.

I'm booked on OZ 201 on Aug 4th, (the day time flight) and called in today to reconfirm my seat assignment.

The agent told me that I'm still in 2K, and her seat map only shows 3 rows, not the 4 of the 747, so that pretty much confirms its the day time flight!

I guess OZ has enough demand for O&D traffic for ICN-LAX direct for the A380..

They don't seem to care for traffic from Southeast Asia. Last week I was looking up flights to California. After fumbling with their website which didnt work at all I called up their hotline in Korea since they dont have a representative in Singapore, or Southeast Asia for the matter.. The agent told me I can't book flights from Singapore to LA on their website (?!) and she wasn't helpful at all.. This is odd considering they fly to SIN and I believe they have some codeshare arrangements with SQ. I went with a combination of SQ and UA instead

Large amount of O&D between LAX and JFK to ICN, its incredible to see the amount of flights KE can offer on ICN-LAX.

As per booking a ticket through to the US from SIN. I had to make last minute travel arrangements in November and booked with OZ through their website when I was in KUL. Though a little primitive in its system I was able to select the flights, whether it be codeshare with SQ or on OZ flights alone, and select specifically the flights I wanted to book as I was to layover in ICN for the day. Also had to visit their office down near MRT Raffles Place. Shame you had trouble booking them as it was a fantastic experience.

Absolutely, after Tokyo-LA and HNL, Seoul-LA is the the largest Asian market from the US and one that is growing at over 12% annually recently.

OZ already is twice daily at LAX, so swapping existing 744 for A380 is not much of an change in capacity.

Actually they do have their own offices in SEA. OZ even maintain two offices in Kota Kinabalu in East Malaysia. So I'm pretty sure they have their own ticket office too in SG, but for some reason, the information is missing from their website.

Also there is potential for non-stop if the loads from SIN are close to typical max passenger load numbers.

This is interesting. I never knew that the flight had payload restrictions.

Also EK is in the radar to start a DXB-SFO A380 since EK started A380 for DXB-LAX recently.

Looks like Asiana has ordered 8 additional A380s bringing their total fleet strength from 6 to 14 units. The first 3 long haul routes shall be LAX, JFK and FRA respectively.

I wonder which route OZ will put there 747 to. Upgrade there second flight out of LAX from 777 to 747 3 class, or bring it to SFO.

I would love to see 3 class service offered out of SFO

Sorry that is total rubbish. Other than Air France who have had three fiery crashes this century killing over 330 people (and should be on the no-fly list of anyone with a will to live), name a "world famous big airline" that have had a crash in recent years? Especially driving a perfectly serviceable machine into the ground on a visual approach in CAVU skies? I think after OZ 214, any questions about safety are very relevant, and certainly cannot be brushed off with "world famous big airlines crash planes also" - no, not really!

I didn't mention China Air Lines or Korean Air because they have been accident-free since 2002 and 1999 respectively which is enough of a run to suggest they have changed their ways.

Quoting CGMAI (Reply 37):
AF is a very good airline, some people might not like them but they are good

There is nothing remotely good about an airline that repeatedly crashes perfectly flyable aeroplanes (AF 358, AF 447) or hollows out the system to make a difficult situation lethal (AF 4590) by taking off 9t overweight, accepting a tailwind, having an engineer shut down an engine without telling anyone etc etc. Maybe the Concorde would have crashed anyway, but with AF there was no other outcome possible. Even if they had great service and a great hub (they don't), this is not a good airline, it's a rotten airline.

Couple more recent incidents for you:

Awesome. Seatmap is released in this article: 12F+311Y at lower deck, 66C+106Y at upper deck.

495 seats total.

That's a very spacious configuration IMO.
What we leave behind is not as important as how we've lived.
