DL Adding IND-CLE

Fri Feb 14, 2014 1:29 am

I just noticed that DL is adding IND-CLE starting June 5th. It will be served by Endeavor Air. The flight will run once daily/6 days a week. Found the flight added to Delta's interactive route map. Isn't this a rather odd route for Delta to start?

I had heard RDU will be added too. Hope it's a CR7 and not an awful little CRJ2, though I'm glad to see any of UAL's old routes being picked up.

Is this DL making the most of the equipment that used to fly in/out of MEM? I wonder if we will see PIT and STL come back.

It is being added and you have your wish.   Will be served by ExpressJet and the 700 series. Starts June 5th as well.

Certainly an opportunistic move. But, if WN and some of the LCCs start and/or add service from CLE, I'm not too sure how long the DL flights will last.

It's already begun. Frontier added CLE-SEA ad CLE-MCO this morning.

It doesn't affect IND, though.

Wow, that was quick. SEA service starts June 15th and MCO service starts June 13th.

Interesting choice of cities. Perhaps F9 wanted to get a head start on DL to SEA? The only other city served by F9 out of SEA is DEN.

I don't understand the surprise that DL and other's are picking up some of the ex-UA routes out of CLE. As a Cleveland based United Premier this will certainly make it more interesting in terms of what to do moving forward. These moves make sense to me.

I'm not a frequent flyer, but I fly 5 to 10 times a year, and I've been sick of United for a long time. I loved Continental, but UAL with their colossally unhelpful Indian call center, delayed flights, lousy service, and OUTRAGEOUS airfares really put me off. I'd jump at the opportunity to build up what I had with CAL with another airline that gives a crap.

When I lived in Boston I flew JetBlue almost exclusively. I'd love to see them in Cleveland.

I would be soo happy to see F9 add some more routes of out Indy. I have Ascent status with them just from flying to DEN for work and I really like them. While they don't have first class or gogo with the Stretch seating I get just as much room as I do in FC and I get a free drink too without having to compete for an upgrade.

This is 112 miles. Will enough people actually pay to fly this short of a distance to warrant service? It's not like CLE is becoming a connecting point of any significance for DL (especially since DTW is so close).

I highly doubt it. I'm sure most of those folks, like the fellows traveling between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, likely drive. It's a straight shot up I-71 anyway...

I don't see CMH-CLE. Even IND-CLE is an awfully short flight for only 1x/day service. There aren't going to be many trips where the schedules work well, and by the time you pay for a one way rental car and likely only save an hour or two, it's not likely to be worth it for a lot of business passengers.

But neither Alaska nor Delta has joined in, so maybe it's a case of make hay while the sun shines for Frontier.

Or it could turn out like DEN-ANC, which Alaska announced within about a nanosecond of Frontier announcing it.

Now, nearly the years later, Frontier and Alaska are still flying DEN-ANC, along with United.

And Frontier does fine against United on CLE-DEN and is more than doubling frequency this summer - from 5 x weekly to 12 x weekly.

I wonder if the motivation is for the RDU side or IND side more than the CLE side. Atleast with RDU, it's trying to offer a number of business markets to RDU pax in effort to possibly win FF loyalty over AA there. But it still won't offer a popular market like Chicago because that's viewed as too competitive.

It seems like those "rumours" of yore were circulated by probable CO/UA employees of the time who believed their employer to be forthright in their assertions, very unfortunate, but CLE-CDG did come to fruition for about 3 months...and very typical of the slowly dismantling and wrecking of the CLE CO/UA "hub" days by CO/UA themselves in favor of those places that were so too close...

Agree there was/is too many U.S. hubs, but further, too much reliance on them. At least we don't have to hear the "too/close" and "reliever hubs are redundant/outdated/inefficient" theories by a.netters any longer. Not in the case of EWR and IAD, hell no. If it comes up, they'll argue bottomless pit O&D, yield, and premium in those markets despite the fiece competition and anything else that might stick to the wall at the moment. Laughable, check out a theory/supposition that the new UA only needs 3 such animals known as a hub:
