Wow, great news. UA has previously split the LAX-SYD-MEL flights into separate flights with 744s. Here's hoping for UA to return to AKL from LAX or SFO.

So this is in addition to daily SYD-LAX on the 744 and daily SYD-SFO on the 772?

If so, that is a lot of extra seats to fill, but exciting none-the-less!

I don't think we'll see UA bring back AKL.. LAX-AKL is well covered by NZ who offer a great inflight product.

I believe this pretty much negates the capacity reduction from moving SFO/LAX-SYD to 777s, so now UA will probably be back to around flat in the U.S.-Australia market overall. Interesting, given how much capacity has flooded into this market in the last five years.

AA is content letting QF handle Australia. It continues to very seriously consider handling the New Zealand part of the JBA.

The addition of a new 787 nonstop on MEL-LAX will add considerable competitive pressure to both VA and QF. Currently UA is seen as the cheap alternative but pretty average in product terms plus a stop in SYD. All of this looks like it is about to be overcome.

Its interesting that they are choosing to keep their BF section the same size (48 seats) as the pmUA 77Es J+BF despite being on the slightly smaller aircraft. Compared to their 788s Y+ actually is shrank by one row and its only 33 seats larger overall.

Seems to relatively inline with the pmCO 77E birds just 2, 9, and 4 seats less in BF, Y+, and Y respectively and 15 (5.6%) seats overall. Not a terrible 77E replacement at all actually.

This article implies that the LAX-SYD flight is gone. Is this just poor reporting or is LAX-SYD in fact being discontinued? Article says UA is discontinuing SYD-MEL but passengers can still reach SYD via SFO.

So this is the first 789 flight announced that I know of for UA. I am assuming that it'll be based in IAH like the other 787s, so will this mean another IAH-LAX turn?

Has the 789 been given ETOPS 330 certification? I haven't seen anything definitive on whether the 788 has ETOPS 330.

Very happy with this announcement. Glad to see LAX get some love, and the first announced 789 flight nonetheless.

There's been no announcements about cutting LAX to SYD nor really any rumor. They are cutting capacity to a 772ER but I have a hard time believing they'd leave the market entirely. The SYD route could go to a 789 pending the 35Js coming on board in a few years.

should be a comfortable layout. What is the quality of the 788 seats>? This city pair at just under 16hrs has to be about the longest sector the 789 will fly. There is probably some wriggle room since most days it can be done in just under 15hrs which would allow for an additional 5t of payload.

Ignore the poorly written article. LAX-SYD remains. Both SYD flights though will get a bit of retiming to maximize connectivity on US end.

Could a 788 make this trip if necessary or does it come up short in the range department?

LAX-SYD shows 7,488 and MEL is 7,921. According to Boeing.com, the 788 has a range of 8,200. Does that figure include reserve fuel or is that a "flame out" at 8,201 miles?

Between the substantial upgrade in product by switching from then 744 to 777 and 787 and the route going non-stop, hopefully UA will start to shift its bottom feeder reputation in this market.

Nope, did not realize. Considering how often and for how long the PVG flight is delayed, it makes sense, or it makes zero sense, depending on how you look at it.

You're confusing statute and nautical miles. LAX-MEL is 6883 nm.

But the 788 still comes up a bit short. Factory range numbers don't take winds, extra empty weight in real-life configurations, or extra reserves into account. This one is going to be pushing the 789 hard, and the 788 would probably have to block off seats most of the time.

Also don't forget that several of UA's 788s are relatively early birds (LNs in the 40s/50s) that are slightly heavier than those in current production, and their still-air range is probably closer to 7900 nm.

Wow finally UA will fly from LAX nonstop to Melbourne.... That is definitely a good piece of news given how many routes United has been cutting from its transpacific network!

I am not sure if a 3-3-3 is comfortable in economy... new seats or not... but at least it has PTV which supposes to distract you from the narrow seats. However the BF seats are nice!

Now I wonder if Delta will follow United's lead or just stick with its codeshare with VA now...

So if SYD-LAX is a 772 and SYD-SFO is a 772 and MEL-LAX a 789 is that much of a capacity increase from the 2 x 747's we used to see? Seems like it is more or less the same, just MEL gets a non stop instead of a one stop as both SYD-LAX/SFO see a capacity reduction to counter the MEL tag dropping.

DL and VA have an anti-trust immunized JV, not a simple codeshare. One might have hoped for daily DL 77L service instead of VA's 3x weekly 77W.

Interesting. Long been rumored that DL would fly LAX-MEL and shift the SYD service to Virgin Australia but it's never come to fruition. Of course UA has a nice advantage in the 787 which is a perfect plane for the route. DL only has the 777 which is of course much larger.

HEs talking about CASM....the 789 should very handily beat the 777s CASM on the route.

In terms of seat width it's 17.3 inches vs 18 on the 777. 17.3 is the same width you find on UAs 767s...its more than sufficient.

Would have to be the 789 but the extra 335 nm from YVR will hurt based on timetable times. But typically most days cut about an hour off timetable times.

Wasn't thinking about the customer with that statement, but if I did, I'd say the same thing. In my view the 787 passenger experience is a clear leader, even with a slightly narrower seat in economy. To put it in other terms, I'd say the 777 is the best of the old flying experience. The 787 ushers in a new one.

Yeah, its a great idea. They do some weird MEL tag on from the flight to SYD but its odd because they deplane all the passengers and change crews in SYD and then reboard. Hopefully the SYD flights will be cheaper now.

Worth noting that the 789 at 48J/204Y will be the most premium-heavy WB in the fleet. Says something about the MEL market.

In terms of seat width it's 17.3 inches vs 18 on the 777. 17.3 is the same width you find on UAs 767s...its more than sufficient.

The seat width should be nearly identical to that of the 747 on that route as well.

And I think it says something about how UA is going to use the 789. As I mentioned in reply #14, the seating is very similar to pmCO 777s.

I think we know the crowd that they are going after.

Hopefully the SYD flights will be cheaper now.

Seeing as how removing the 2 B744s and the non stop MEL flight is taking capacity OUT of the SYD market it seems unlikely that flights will be cheaper.
