Bird Strike Cockpit Video

Mon Feb 24, 2014 11:02 am

Hi there,

I have just found this on one of local news portals. Reportedly happened several days ago somewhere in Florida on approach at 150 kts with the pilot being referred to as Rob Weber (only person onboard).

It DOES look scary, but thankfully the pilot retained full control of the aircraft and landed safely with only several scratches on the forehead from shattered windshield.

Best regards

FAO

EDIT: Sorry, I was only referring to the description posted in the portal. I see that you can find all the details in the YT video description.

RE: Bird Strike Cockpit Video

This happened to me in 1999. I was flying a C172N back from PHNM to PHTO on a picnic day trip with mum. We were flying under an overcast layer VFR about 5500 ft mid channel between Maui and the Big Island when a bird just swooped down out of nowhere and ended our conversation about the jam mom was going to make for Thanksgiving. It came right through the windscreen and right into her face. In our situation the birdy ending up going to birdy heaven right in her lap. We diverted to PHUP and luckily nobody was seriously injured except the 172. I had never noticed birds in the channel flying so high before, it was strange. I don't remember what type of bird it was, but it didn't hit the prop so it was pretty much still in one piece. The 172 was repaired and flew for another 10 years or so before it was retired. Mum decided she would stick to DC-9s and drive the road to Hana from then on.
